CSS content-visibility: auto can reduce the rendering work a browser does for offscreen parts of a long page. Apply it to substantial, independent sections and pair it with contain-intrinsic-size to reserve plausible space while those sections are skipped. It can improve initial rendering, but the result depends on the page; measure your own site rather than treating a published demo result as a forecast.

What content-visibility does—and what it does not do

The content-visibility property lets the browser skip rendering work for an element’s contents when appropriate. With auto, the browser may skip an offscreen section’s layout and painting, then render it when it becomes relevant. This can be useful on long pages whose below-the-fold sections are expensive to render.

It does not remove the section’s markup from the DOM, and it is not a general way to reduce network transfer or JavaScript execution. The optimization is about rendering. It is most promising when the page has large offscreen content chunks and the application does not force those chunks to render prematurely. See MDN’s content-visibility reference and web.dev’s explanation.

Apply it to substantial offscreen sections

Use a meaningful unit of page content—such as an article section—not every individual element. The following is a starting pattern, not a universal size prescription:

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
.article-section {
  content-visibility: auto;
  contain-intrinsic-size: auto 500px;
}

The auto 500px value lets the browser use a remembered rendered size when available and otherwise use 500 pixels as a fallback. Select a fallback that roughly matches the section’s normal size. A poor estimate can make the page’s scroll position or layout shift noticeably when the real content is rendered. The MDN contain-intrinsic-size reference explains the property.

Choose the right chunks

  • Prefer sizeable, independent sections that are initially offscreen and costly to lay out or paint.
  • Avoid applying the rule indiscriminately to tiny elements; they offer little work to skip and make behavior harder to reason about.
  • Check scripts that query or otherwise force rendering of descendants. Such code can undermine the optimization.

What happens while a section is skipped

MDN’s CSS containment guide describes skipped contents as having layout, style, paint, and size containment. They are not painted and do not receive pointer events while skipped. With auto, content can still be searched and focused, and it can become relevant to the browser. Do not treat content-visibility: hidden as interchangeable with auto; their behavior differs.

Protect accessibility and interactive behavior

Offscreen content using auto remains in the DOM and accessibility tree. This can preserve access to content and support search and focus navigation. There is an important edge case: styles in skipped content have not yet been rendered, so descendants intended to be excluded with display: none or visibility: hidden may still appear in the accessibility tree before the section becomes relevant.

If content truly must be absent from the accessibility tree, web.dev advises using aria-hidden="true". Use it only when that matches the content’s intended semantics, and verify the result with assistive technology. Do not use it to hide meaningful content from users of assistive technology.

Pause work that is unnecessary while skipped

For expensive application work such as drawing a canvas, the contentvisibilityautostatechange event can signal when an auto-contained element begins or stops being skipped. See MDN’s event reference. Consider using it to avoid work that is not useful while a section is offscreen, and make sure that work resumes when the section becomes relevant.

Measure the result on your page

web.dev reported a 7x rendering-performance boost on initial load for its 2020 demonstration after applying content-visibility: auto to chunked content areas. That is a result for that demonstration, not a controlled universal estimate or a promise for another site. Your gain depends on how much expensive rendering can be skipped and whether code forces skipped content to render.
