Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

It does not mean testing every possible combination or making every screen look identical. The right test matrix follows your audience, the application’s required features, and an explicit support policy.
What compatibility testing means for a web app
MDN Web Docs describes cross-browser testing as ensuring a website works across browsers and devices. In practice, browser and device differences can affect feature support, rendering, interaction, and performance. Hardware capabilities, user preferences, and assistive technology also shape whether people can use the site.
Compatibility is primarily about user-facing outcomes: can people access core information and complete important tasks? A mobile layout may differ appropriately from a desktop layout; pixel-for-pixel sameness is not the goal. Web standards encourage interoperable behavior, but standards compliance alone does not prove that an application’s flows work in every browser implementation.
Accessibility belongs in the practical scope. Check that core tasks can be completed with a keyboard and that content and controls work with relevant screen readers and browser combinations. Automated checks can help find defects, but they cannot by themselves establish that the experience is usable or accessible.

Choose browsers and devices from your audience
There is no universal browser matrix that suits every application. Start with the product’s support commitments and the people it serves; use site analytics, audience geography, and application requirements to identify the combinations that matter. For a new app without usage data, define a provisional matrix from the expected audience and required features, then revisit it as real usage becomes visible. MDN’s examples include Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari, and mobile platforms, but these are examples, not a blanket support policy.
Make support tiers explicit
| Tier | What to promise | How to test |
|---|---|---|
| Full support | Common, current browsers and devices for the target audience. | Thoroughly test important user flows, layouts, and interactions. |
| Core support | Older or less capable configurations can still access essential information and services. | Verify core tasks and provide fallbacks where required features are missing. |
| Defensive fallback | Rare or unknown configurations are not promised a bespoke experience, but avoid preventable barriers to basic access. | Use resilient defaults and graceful fallbacks; expand coverage if user evidence justifies it. |
Record the supported browser and operating-system versions, device classes, and any essential feature requirements. A written policy helps developers and QA distinguish a release-blocking defect from a cosmetic difference outside the promised support range.

A practical compatibility-testing workflow
- Agree on the support matrix. Before development or a major feature, identify the target browsers, operating systems, devices, and accessibility needs. Note likely risk areas such as newer APIs or complex media behavior.
- Check feature availability. Look up the APIs, CSS, and JavaScript features the application depends on. MDN Baseline summarizes availability across selected popular browsers, including Safari on iOS and macOS, Chrome on Android and desktop, Edge desktop, and Firefox on Android and desktop. It distinguishes widely available features from newly available or limited-availability features; use it as a planning aid, not proof that your app works.
- Break the app into user tasks. List important flows, such as signing in, navigating, searching, submitting a form, or completing a purchase. Test each feature as it is implemented rather than postponing compatibility checks until release.
- Start with a small, useful baseline. Check a couple of stable desktop browsers, do a keyboard and screen-reader pass, and test at least one mobile platform. Fix serious issues before expanding to the full agreed matrix.
- Expand to the supported combinations. Test the specific phones, tablets, desktop environments, and browser versions your audience relies on. Use physical devices where practical. Emulators and virtual machines can extend OS and device coverage when a physical lab is unavailable, but do not treat an emulated environment as identical to every real device.
- Automate repeatable checks. Automate important user actions and, where useful, compare screenshots across browsers. Playwright supports projects for Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit and can use branded Chrome and Edge channels. Its browser binaries are tied to Playwright releases, so keep the framework current when you want coverage against recent browser releases.
- Review with people and assistive technology. Combine automation with hands-on usability review, accessibility evaluation, and user feedback. W3C guidance cautions that individual authors generally cannot exhaustively determine support across every technology, user-agent, and assistive-technology combination.
Choose the right testing method for the question
| Method | Useful for | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Manual testing on physical devices | Real-world interaction, device constraints, usability, and assistive-technology review. | Coverage is limited by available devices, time, and repeatability. |
| Emulators and virtual machines | Broadening OS and device coverage without a full physical lab. | They do not reproduce every physical-device condition. |
| Browser automation | Repeatable checks of user actions and regressions in a CI workflow. | Automation does not replace human usability or accessibility assessment. |
| Feature-support references | Assessing whether a browser is expected to support a web platform feature. | They do not test your application’s flows or establish behavior in older releases, web views, or with assistive technology. |
For automated tests, assert what users can see and do rather than implementation details such as CSS class names or internal function names. Playwright’s bundled Chromium may be ahead of branded stable Chrome and Edge. If your regression target is publicly available Chrome or Edge—or codec behavior matters—use the relevant branded channel. Browser versions and automation channels change, so keep those targets aligned with the support policy.
WebDriver provides a platform- and language-neutral interface for scripts to inspect and control browser behavior. The W3C index lists a 2018 Recommendation and a 2026 Working Draft; those are distinct statuses, so refer to the specific version when discussing the standard.

Use screenshots as one part of visual review
Automated screenshots can make layout regressions easier to spot across selected browser projects, but a screenshot only records a visual state. It does not show whether a keyboard user can reach a control, whether a screen reader announces it correctly, or whether the flow works. Select stable states and review meaningful differences rather than treating every pixel change as a defect.
If you need a screenshot API for this part of your workflow, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. It can capture PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; it also supports full-page capture, element capture, device viewports, and options such as waiting for a selector or network idle. It is a supplement for screenshot-based checks, not a replacement for testing the application’s behavior in your supported browsers.

Common compatibility-testing mistakes
- Trying to cover every possible combination: Set a support matrix based on audience and commitments instead of promising universal coverage.
- Testing only whether a page renders: Exercise important user tasks, error states, keyboard access, and assistive-technology use.
- Treating feature tables as application tests: A browser may support an API while your implementation still fails in a particular flow.
- Equating screenshots with usability: Visual captures reveal some layout differences, not whether an interface is operable or understandable.
- Leaving compatibility until release: Test each feature during implementation so issues are found while changes are still localized.
- Ignoring browser and framework updates: Keep automated browser targets current and re-evaluate the matrix when user data, browser support, or product commitments change.
Frequently asked questions
Does compatibility mean a website must look identical in every browser?
No. The requirement is that supported users can access core information and complete essential tasks. Layout and presentation can adapt to the device and browser.
