Test a Magento store by checking agreed customer journeys at each stage—local development, integration, staging, and production—not just by confirming that the home page loads. Start with signed-off requirements, match test tools to your exact Adobe Commerce or Magento version and deployment model, then run functional, performance, security, and launch checks for the questions each is meant to answer.
Define what “working” means before testing
Turn approved user stories, use cases, technical specifications, and test cases into expected outcomes that someone else can repeat. Adobe Commerce’s general development guidance says development should not begin without sign-off on these materials and recommends having development and QA environments available. It also states, “All development MUST be functionally tested by the developer before submission.”
Build a smoke-test matrix from the features your store actually has. Common journeys to consider include:
- Open a category or product page and verify product details, options, images, and availability.
- Search the catalog and apply filters or sorting.
- Add an item to the cart, change its quantity, and remove it.
- Apply an eligible promotion and check that the resulting totals are correct.
- Enter a delivery address and verify shipping and tax calculations.
- Complete the configured payment flow in a safe test setup, then verify the order and expected email outcomes.
- Test relevant account, store-view, or third-party integration paths.
These are examples, not a universal Adobe checklist. Tailor them to the enabled catalog, payment, shipping, tax, account, multi-store, and extension configuration. Record the expected result and what counts as a failure for each journey.

Match the test setup to your Magento version and deployment
“Magento” is still common reader language; current Adobe documentation generally refers to the product as Adobe Commerce. Before choosing a framework or copying a CI configuration, confirm the installed release, whether the store is Adobe Commerce or Magento Open Source, the deployment model, and which services and integrations are enabled. Check compatibility for the specific release rather than assuming a generic Magento stack.
Match development and test environments to the major and minor versions of the intended production stack, especially PHP, database, search, cache, queue, and Commerce. A test that passes against a materially different stack may not predict production behavior.
Choose frameworks for their scope
For Adobe Commerce on Cloud, Adobe’s testing guidance identifies the Magento Functional Testing Framework (MFTF) for application testing and Codeception for PHP code intended for contribution to Cloud package repositories. These tools address distinct contexts; Codeception should not be treated as Adobe’s general storefront end-to-end replacement. Cloud-specific steps also do not automatically apply to every Open Source or self-hosted installation.
Framework compatibility can vary by release. For example, Adobe Commerce 2.4.8 release notes recommend that customers with customizations and Marketplace vendors verify unit and integration tests on PHPUnit 10 rather than PHPUnit 9. That is release-specific advice, not a rule for every Magento version.

Run tests through local, integration, and staging environments
Passing locally or in integration does not establish that a release will work in staging or production. Adobe recommends progressing from local development to integration and resolving issues before moving on. It also strongly recommends testing in Integration, Staging, and Production because custom code, themes, extensions, and external integrations interact.
- Local: Have developers functionally test their changes and run the automated tests appropriate to the project before review.
- Integration: Test combined changes and integrations. This environment may lack services present elsewhere, such as Fastly or New Relic, and its data may differ from production-like data.
- Staging: Use a production-like configuration for release-candidate testing and user acceptance testing. Verify journeys that depend on the actual services and settings expected in production.
- Production: After deployment, perform controlled operational checks against the live configuration. Keep these distinct from unrestricted test transactions.
For each run, record the environment, code revision, relevant configuration, test data, and outcome. This makes failures easier to reproduce and helps identify differences between environments. Do not use real customer data in test workflows unless your organization’s privacy and data-handling rules expressly permit it.
Separate functional, load, stress, and security testing
Functional testing checks expected behavior
Functional tests ask whether the store does what the requirements say, from a single code change to a complete customer journey. Use developer checks and automated tests during development, followed by review and QA before delivery. Include manual testing where a person needs to assess a flow or result that is not adequately covered by automation.
Load testing checks expected demand
A load test measures behavior under expected concurrent use and business transactions. Adobe describes it as a way to expose bottlenecks and response behavior in components such as the database or application server. Model representative catalog, search, cart, checkout, and API activity; increase traffic in controlled steps and observe latency, errors, throughput, and resource saturation. Those measurements are practical ways to assess a run, not universal pass thresholds: the reviewed Adobe guidance does not establish one user count or acceptable response time for all stores.

Stress testing checks beyond expected demand
A stress test pushes beyond expected maximum load to assess capacity limits. Plan it separately from a normal load test, and coordinate it with the hosting provider and affected services so the test itself does not create an outage or violate provider rules.
Choose performance tools for the job
Adobe’s launch checklist names Performance Toolkit, Siege, and JMeter for simulated traffic or load testing, and New Relic for locating slow actions or processes. They are options, not interchangeable guarantees of realistic results. Choose based on the deployment, ability to model real journeys, concurrency control, reporting, observability, team experience, and operating cost. Scripts that omit expensive journeys or use unrealistic data and caching can give misleadingly reassuring results.
Keep security assessment authorized
Adobe describes penetration testing as an authorized simulated cyberattack to identify weaknesses. Its Cloud testing guidance specifically prohibits customers from conducting security assessments of AWS infrastructure or AWS services. Keep any assessment within written authorization and the hosting provider’s applicable policy; do not probe shared infrastructure without permission.
Adobe’s Security Scan Tool monitors store sites for known security risks, malware, and outdated software. It supports scheduled or on-demand runs and labels findings Failed or Unidentified. Adobe says teams commonly begin using it during UAT; investigate those findings and make needed fixes through development before moving them into production.

Validate launch configuration and check production carefully
Adobe’s launch checklist calls for a final production-configuration pass that includes outgoing email, secure Admin credentials and base Admin URL, image optimization, HTML, JavaScript, and CSS minification, and Fastly cache behavior. Confirm secure storefront and Admin URLs against the actual topology; the appropriate settings depend on the installed deployment.
After deployment, check the live store from outside the deployment environment. A practical operational check includes:
- DNS resolution and certificate behavior for the intended hostnames.
- Storefront and Admin access under the intended access controls.
- Page assets, image delivery, and cache behavior.
- A low-risk customer journey and relevant external integrations.
- Transactional email delivery.
- Application and infrastructure telemetry and logs during the checks.
Control live payment and order tests to avoid unintended charges, fulfillment, or customer communications. Production checks validate the deployed configuration; they are not a substitute for thorough pre-launch testing.

For a local browser-based method, use your team’s existing browser automation setup to navigate to the target page, wait for the relevant content, capture a screenshot, and compare it with the approved baseline. Keep the browser version, viewport, test data, and page state consistent between runs; otherwise differences may reflect the test setup rather than a code regression. The exact automation commands depend on the browser framework and version used by your project.

Troubleshoot common testing failures
- A test passes locally but fails in integration or staging: Compare the Commerce and service versions, configuration, enabled extensions, environment variables, external services, and data. These environments may not offer the same services or production-like data.
- A test framework or test suite will not run: Check that its version and dependencies support the installed Commerce release and deployment model. Do not apply Cloud-specific instructions to a different installation without confirming they fit.
- A test passes but customers still encounter a broken journey: Check whether the test covers the full path and configured payment, shipping, tax, email, or third-party behavior. A page-load check alone does not validate those outcomes.
- Load-test results look unusually good: Review whether the script exercises expensive journeys and uses representative catalog data, cache conditions, and traffic patterns. Confirm server-side telemetry is available to explain the results.
- A security scan reports Failed or Unidentified: Investigate the finding, fix confirmed issues in development, and rerun checks before deployment. Keep security assessment scope within authorization and provider policy.
- Production email, assets, or cache behavior differs from staging: Verify the production configuration and service-specific behavior, including email delivery, asset optimization and minification, and Fastly where used.
- A live payment or order check could affect a customer: Stop and use the approved safe test setup or a deliberately controlled low-risk procedure before generating real transactions.
How to decide whether a store is ready
A store is not ready merely because one test suite is green. Before release, verify that acceptance criteria are covered, the relevant journeys work in a production-like environment, performance testing reflects expected demand, security findings have been handled within authorized scope, and launch configuration has been checked. After deployment, complete controlled production checks and monitor the store for issues that staging could not reveal.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Magento the same as Adobe Commerce?
Magento remains a familiar name, while Adobe’s current documentation generally calls the product Adobe Commerce. Confirm whether the installation is Adobe Commerce or Magento Open Source, along with its release and deployment model, before following version- or Cloud-specific guidance.
How many users should I simulate in a Magento load test?
There is no universal number established by the cited Adobe guidance. Derive a workload from the store’s expected demand, transaction mix, and hosting capacity, then coordinate the test with the provider.
Does a screenshot test verify checkout?
No. A screenshot records visual output at a particular state; it does not establish that checkout calculations, payment processing, order creation, or email delivery work.
