To use Selenium WebDriver for cross-browser testing, write a test around a user-visible workflow, run it against each browser and operating system in your supported matrix, and compare the same assertions across runs. Start locally with a Selenium language binding and an installed browser; Selenium Manager is the default driver and browser management route in current bindings. Use Selenium Grid and RemoteWebDriver when you need remote machines, more browser/platform combinations, or parallel sessions.
What WebDriver does in a cross-browser test
Selenium WebDriver is Selenium’s browser-control interface. Selenium describes it as driving a browser natively, and the project identifies WebDriver as a W3C Recommendation. The interface gives a test a common way to navigate, locate elements, interact with a page, and inspect outcomes; it does not make browser implementations identical. Each browser has its own driver implementation, options, and version behavior.
A cross-browser test is most useful when it checks whether the same important user task works in the environments your product supports. For example, a checkout test can open the page, submit valid details, and assert that a confirmation state appears. Keep the workflow and intent of the assertions consistent, while recording which browser, version, operating system, and relevant capabilities were used for each run.
See Selenium’s WebDriver documentation and setup guide.

Choose a browser and platform matrix
Decide which environments matter before building a large test fleet. Use your product’s support commitments and user risk to select a manageable set of browser-family/version and operating-system combinations. Expand it when product changes, support requirements, or observed failures justify the added coverage; testing every possible combination is not automatically necessary.
- List the browser families and versions your product supports or your users rely on.
- Choose the operating systems that matter for those users or for platform-specific behavior.
- Identify capabilities relevant to the feature under test, such as a browser-specific option that could affect the workflow.
- Keep test steps and assertions comparable across environments, and include the selected browser options and environment details in failure reports.
Selenium’s Grid documentation describes its cross-browser use cases in terms of browser types, versions, operating systems, and machines. For a mismatch, reproduce the failure in the named browser/version and operating system before treating it as a product defect; a capability or session-setup error can look like a browser incompatibility. See Selenium Grid and Grid applicability guidance.
Set up a local Selenium session
The example below uses Python. It starts a local Chrome session, opens a page, waits for an observable page condition, checks the title, and closes the browser even if an assertion fails. Install the Selenium Python binding and Chrome, then follow the current Python setup instructions. Selenium Manager is the default management route in Selenium bindings; avoid relying on old, hard-coded driver download steps without checking current guidance.

The binding, browser, and browser driver implementation are the essential pieces of a local session. Selenium’s setup page explains driver implementations and browser-vendor drivers; the project overview documents Selenium Manager as the default tool for driver and browser management in bindings. Follow the current language-specific instructions at Selenium WebDriver: Getting Started.
Understand the session lifecycle
- Create the browser-specific options object and set only the options needed for the run.
- Start the driver, which creates a browser session.
- Navigate to the page and perform the user actions in the scenario.
- Wait for the condition that demonstrates the expected result, then assert it.
- Close the session with
quit()in cleanup so the browser process is not left running after a failure.
Selenium 4 uses browser options classes. For remote sessions, an options instance also tells the remote end which browser is requested. See Selenium browser options.
Run the same workflow in multiple browsers
Keep the test’s purpose stable and vary the browser configuration at the edge of the test. A small Python example can select a local browser from a command-line argument:

Run the same test entry point once for each browser configured in your matrix, with the target browser installed and setup supported by the current binding. Browser-specific configuration should remain explicit rather than being silently assumed to work everywhere. Selenium provides dedicated documentation for Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Internet Explorer, and Safari.
Compatibility guidance is version-sensitive. Selenium’s Chrome documentation specifies that Chrome and ChromeDriver major versions must match. Check the live browser-specific documentation when maintaining a matrix or diagnosing a session startup failure rather than treating a version rule as timeless.

Make cross-browser assertions reliable
Tests become flaky when they assume that a page is ready after a fixed amount of time or when they assert implementation details that are not part of the user outcome. Prefer condition-based waits for the element or state the test needs. Use browser-specific capabilities only when they are relevant, and capture those settings with the result so a failure can be reproduced.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- Wait for a meaningful condition, such as an element being present or a result state appearing.
- Avoid using arbitrary sleeps as a general synchronization strategy; page and network timing vary.
- Assert observable outcomes that correspond to the workflow, rather than internal details that vary by browser.
- When an environment fails, record browser family/version, operating system, and options, then rerun the same scenario in that environment.
When to use Selenium Grid and RemoteWebDriver
Use local sessions while developing a test or debugging a single browser. Move to Grid when tests need remote machines, a wider browser and operating-system matrix, or concurrent sessions to reduce turnaround. Selenium describes Standalone as a single-machine starting point and Hub/Node as a way to combine machines with different systems or browser versions.
Start a simple Grid deployment
For a single-machine starting point, Selenium’s Grid documentation uses the Standalone deployment. Exact installation and launch commands depend on the current Selenium release and deployment method, so use the live Grid getting-started guide rather than copying a command that may be stale. For multiple machines, configure the Grid’s Hub/Node arrangement and register nodes that provide the browser/platform combinations in your matrix.
Connect with RemoteWebDriver
RemoteWebDriver sends WebDriver commands to a Grid endpoint. Supply the endpoint and browser options that identify the requested browser. In Python, the core shape is:

from selenium import webdriver
options = webdriver.ChromeOptions()
driver = webdriver.Remote(
command_executor="http://GRID_HOST:4444",
options=options,
)
try:
driver.get("https://www.selenium.dev/")
assert "Selenium" in driver.title
finally:
driver.quit()
Replace GRID_HOST with the address reachable from the test client, and make sure the Grid has a node capable of satisfying the requested options. Remote sessions require an options instance; it is how the client identifies the desired browser. See Remote WebDriver.
Size and secure Grid for your environment
Grid capacity depends on the available machines and resources, the browsers being run, and the desired concurrency. Selenium’s illustrative calculations are examples, not universal capacity guarantees or benchmark results. Measure the workload in your own environment and add capacity based on actual resource pressure and test turnaround needs. Keep Grid behind appropriate network controls: Selenium warns against exposing it to external access without protection.
Choose local execution or Grid
| Consideration | Local browser sessions | Selenium Grid |
|---|---|---|
| Browser and operating-system coverage | Suitable for browsers and systems available on the development machine. | Routes sessions to machines that provide the required browser and platform combinations. |
| Parallel runs | Limited to what the local machine can support. | Supports distributed and parallel execution when Grid nodes and resources are available. |
| Infrastructure effort | Lower for initial development and single-machine debugging. | Requires operating and sizing Grid machines and nodes. |
| Control and security | Browser runs remain on the local machine. | Requires control of the Grid endpoint and appropriate network protections. |
Troubleshoot common failures
- Browser session does not start: Check that the browser is installed and that the binding’s setup instructions are current. For Chrome, verify the major-version match between Chrome and ChromeDriver in Selenium’s current Chrome documentation.
- Remote session cannot be created: Confirm that the client can reach the Grid endpoint, that the Grid is running, and that the supplied options identify a browser available on a registered node.
- A test passes in one browser but fails in another: Reproduce with the reported browser/version and operating system, then inspect browser-specific capabilities and the actual page state before deciding whether the cause is the application or environment.
- Intermittent timing failure: Replace fixed-delay assumptions with a wait for the specific state the assertion depends on; verify that the condition is meaningful for the workflow.
- Grid runs are slow or unstable at higher concurrency: Check machine resource use and node capacity against the chosen workload. Grid sizing is environment-dependent, so adjust concurrency based on observed behavior rather than assuming a fixed sessions-per-machine figure.
- Grid is reachable from outside the intended network: Restrict access with network controls and do not expose an unprotected Grid endpoint publicly.
