Use CSS @font-face to load a web font, then include its declared family name in a font-family stack with fallbacks. For most modern sites, WOFF2 is a sensible format to start with. Match each file’s weight and style descriptors to the font it contains, choose how text should behave while it loads, and check that its license permits web use.
How to add a custom font to your website
Put the licensed web-font file in your site’s assets, define it with @font-face, and use the family name you declared in a normal CSS font stack.
@font-face {
font-family: "Example Sans";
src: url("/fonts/example-sans-regular.woff2") format("woff2");
font-weight: 400;
font-style: normal;
font-display: swap;
}
body {
font-family: "Example Sans", Arial, sans-serif;
}
Here, Example Sans is the CSS family name; it does not have to match the font file’s filename. The URL is relative to the site root in this example, so the file must be available at /fonts/example-sans-regular.woff2. Change the path to match where you actually serve the asset.
Match descriptors to the font file
The font-weight and font-style descriptors tell the browser which face that file represents. The example file is regular weight (400) and normal style. If you have separate files for other static weights or italics, declare separate @font-face rules with the corresponding descriptors and file paths. Do not label a regular file as bold or italic; use the actual files available to the project.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Keep a fallback stack
The later entries in font-family provide alternatives if the custom font cannot load. A generic family such as sans-serif at the end gives the browser a broad fallback. A fallback is also useful when the custom font does not contain a character the page needs.
Choose a format and loading behavior
Use WOFF2 as a modern starting point
WOFF2 is efficiently compressed and broadly supported in modern browsers, making it a sensible default for contemporary projects. Browser support is not identical across every environment, so check the actual browsers your site must support. Add older formats only when a specific compatibility requirement calls for them. See MDN’s @font-face reference and its web fonts guide for format and implementation details.

Select font-display deliberately
font-display controls how the browser handles the face before and after the font download. The example uses swap, which is one option, not a universal best choice. MDN documents auto, block, swap, fallback, and optional; choose based on the loading and text-swapping behavior you want. Consult MDN’s font-display reference for the options.
Cover the characters your site uses
If you serve language-specific or other character subsets, make sure the subsets collectively cover the characters that appear on the site. The unicode-range descriptor can associate a face with a range of characters; MDN discusses it in the web fonts guide. Missing glyphs can still be displayed using a fallback font, so test text in the languages and scripts your pages actually use.

Self-host a font or use a hosted service?
Both are valid ways to deliver web fonts. With self-hosting, you serve the font file from your own site. A hosted service can provide CSS and font resources; Google’s technical documentation describes a browser retrieving CSS and then downloading an appropriate font resource. There is no established universal performance, privacy, or operational winner: evaluate your project’s requirements rather than assuming one approach is always better.
| Decision | What to consider |
|---|---|
| File and update control | Compare managing your own files with relying on a hosted provider’s delivery and terms. |
| Compatibility | Start with WOFF2 for a modern browser baseline; add another format only for a concrete compatibility need. |
| Loading behavior | Choose a font-display value for the experience you want while the font is loading. |
| Permission | Confirm that the font’s license covers the intended web use and delivery method. |
For hosted delivery details, see Google Fonts’ technical considerations.

Check the font license before deployment
Permission to download or use a font on a desktop does not automatically mean you may embed it on a website, redistribute it, or deliver it through any method you choose. Check the terms for the specific font and intended use before deployment. MDN cautions that “Fonts generally aren’t free to use without restrictions” and notes that web-font formats can be governed by terms different from TrueType or OpenType licensing. See the MDN web fonts guide.
Troubleshoot a font that does not appear
- Check the request path: In the browser’s developer tools, inspect the font request and confirm that the URL in
srcpoints to the file that is actually being served. Fix a typo or adjust the path if the file is elsewhere. - Check cross-origin access: MDN notes a same-domain restriction for font files unless HTTP access controls relax it. If the stylesheet and font are on different origins, inspect the console and network errors and confirm the server returns appropriate CORS headers.
- Check the descriptors: Make sure the requested weight and style correspond to a declared face and to the file it references. Add a separate face for a distinct static weight or style when you have the matching file.
- Check glyph coverage: If only particular characters fall back, verify that the font contains them and that any declared subsets and
unicode-rangevalues cover the text. - Check the fallback behavior: Keep a usable fallback family in the stack so text remains readable when the custom font is unavailable.
Or skip the browser setup
For capturing a page as an image or PDF, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Its screenshot endpoint returns a capture from one GET request; this is separate from loading a custom font into your own website’s CSS.
