Use XPath when an element is best identified by its relationship to other page elements or by a combination of attributes and text—and a stable ID, accessible role or name, label, or test ID does not identify it clearly. First make sure the locator expresses the intended control, then verify that it matches exactly the element you expect. XPath is flexible, but a long path tied to the page’s current structure can be brittle and hard to debug.
When XPath is the right fallback
XPath is a language for navigating nodes in structured documents. Browser automation tools can use it to locate nodes in an HTML document. Its practical advantage is that it can express relationships—such as a button inside a particular section—or combine conditions on attributes and text.
Start with the element’s identity, not with XPath syntax. If the page offers a stable unique ID, an accessible role and name, a label, or a test ID, consider those first. They often make the locator’s purpose clearer. XPath is useful when those options are missing or ambiguous and the target is naturally described by its context or a combination of conditions.
Selenium recommends a unique, predictable ID when available, and a well-written CSS selector when one is not. Its documentation describes XPath as another option, while cautioning that its syntax can be difficult to debug. Playwright supports XPath but favors locators based on user-perceived roles or explicit test IDs when those express the target without coupling the test to DOM structure.

Choose a locator that states intent

There is no numeric speed comparison established here for XPath versus CSS. Selenium’s guidance says complex DOM traversals can be expensive and characterizes XPath selectors as typically slow, while noting that browser vendors generally do not performance-test them. For most locator decisions, prioritize correctness, resilience, and debuggability rather than assuming a universal speed ranking.
Write a focused XPath
Build the shortest expression that captures a meaningful attribute, text, or relationship. These generic examples must be checked against the page’s actual markup:
//button[@type='submit']selects button elements whosetypeattribute issubmit. It may match more than one button.//label[normalize-space(.)='Email']/following::input[1]selects the first input following a label whose normalized text is “Email.” This illustrates a relationship, but it does not prove that the input is semantically associated with that label; use a framework’s label locator when it is available and appropriate.//section[@aria-label='Billing']//button[normalize-space(.)='Edit']selects a button with normalized text “Edit” inside a section whosearia-labelis “Billing.” The result depends on the real attribute values, text, and page structure.
Use stable attributes or a meaningful nearby anchor when possible. Avoid copying every ancestor from the document root: each unnecessary structural dependency creates another way for ordinary markup changes to invalidate the locator.

Use XPath in Playwright or Selenium
Playwright
Playwright accepts an explicit xpath= prefix and also recognizes a short-form XPath passed to page.locator():

If a role/name or test-ID locator expresses the target more directly, Playwright’s locator guidance favors those choices over selectors tied to DOM implementation.

Selenium
Selenium supports XPath as one of its traditional locator strategies. In Java, for example, the spelling is By.xpath(...):

editButton.click();API spelling and available methods vary by language binding; consult the current documentation for the binding and version you use. A singular Selenium find call returns the first matching element. If you need to confirm uniqueness or handle multiple matches, use a plural find call and inspect the returned collection rather than treating a first match as proof of a unique locator.

- Inspect the live page. Confirm the target exists in the current document and browsing context. Check whether it is inside a frame, whether it has rendered, and whether the visible element is a duplicate of another node.
- Test the smallest useful expression. Start with a stable attribute or a meaningful relationship, then add only the conditions needed to distinguish the target. Avoid an unnecessarily long chain of ancestors.
- Count matches. A selector that returns several nodes is ambiguous unless the automation deliberately handles a collection. A singular Selenium find call selecting the first match does not establish that the match is unique.
- Validate in the automation context. Check the locator after the page reaches the state in which it will run. Dynamic content, hidden duplicates, frames, and changing markup can affect what the locator sees.
- Switch strategies if the structure is unstable. Try a role/name, label, test ID, unique ID, or concise CSS selector if it captures the target more clearly and is less dependent on DOM arrangement.
Why an XPath can break after a page change
An XPath can depend on details that are not part of the element’s lasting identity: which container currently wraps it, how many ancestor nodes appear before it, the exact text, or an attribute that changes between renders. If the page is reorganized, a structurally chained selector may stop matching or may match a different node.

Playwright explicitly warns that XPath and CSS selectors tied to DOM structure can break when that structure changes. Keep locators compact, anchor them on stable properties where possible, and prefer a semantic locator or a deliberately maintained test ID when one describes the intended element. XPath is a useful tool in the locator toolkit, not a reason to encode the whole current DOM.
