In JUnit 4, put @Ignore on a test method to keep it from running, or on a test class to disable its tests. Add a short reason so the skipped test is understandable in the report. For new JUnit Jupiter tests, use @Disabled instead.
Skip one test in JUnit 4
Import org.junit.Ignore and apply it alongside @Test. The method remains in the test source, but JUnit does not execute it as a test.
import org.junit.Ignore;
import org.junit.Test;
public class ExampleTest {
@Ignore("Disabled until issue #123 is fixed")
@Test
public void testSomething() {
// test body
}
}
The string is optional and defaults to empty, but a concise, actionable explanation is more useful than an unexplained skip. For example, note the known defect or condition that must change before re-enabling the test. The JUnit 4.13.2 API documents method-level behavior for methods annotated with both @Test and @Ignore: JUnit 4.13.2 Ignore API.
Disable every test in a JUnit 4 class
Put @Ignore on the class when the whole class should be skipped:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
import org.junit.Ignore;
import org.junit.Test;
@Ignore("Waiting for the test environment to be restored")
public class IntegrationTest {
@Test
public void connectsToService() {
// test body
}
@Test
public void readsServiceData() {
// test body
}
}
JUnit 4 declares the annotation for both methods and types. Use method-level annotation for an individual test and class-level annotation when all tests contained in that class should be disabled.
Why use @Ignore instead of commenting out a test?
Commenting out a test or removing its @Test annotation keeps it out of the runner’s test results. With @Ignore, native JUnit 4 runners can report ignored tests alongside tests that ran and tests that failed. That makes a temporary skip visible to the team rather than silently removing the test from the report. The JUnit team describes this reporting behavior in its Ignoring tests guide.

JUnit 4 @Ignore versus Jupiter @Disabled
| Test framework | Annotation and import | Usage | Compatibility setup |
|---|---|---|---|
| JUnit 4 | @Ignore, org.junit.Ignore |
Disable a test method or class; a method-level ignored test also has @Test. |
Native JUnit 4 behavior. |
| JUnit Jupiter | @Disabled, org.junit.jupiter.api.Disabled |
Disable a test method or class; the guide recommends providing a reason. | Native Jupiter annotation; no legacy @Ignore support is needed. |
| Jupiter running tests that retain JUnit 4 @Ignore | @Ignore, org.junit.Ignore |
Disable legacy-annotated classes or methods through the migration support condition. | Add junit-jupiter-migrationsupport and register IgnoreCondition, or use @EnableJUnit4MigrationSupport. |
For new Jupiter code, use @Disabled, not JUnit 4’s @Ignore. The JUnit 5 User Guide documents the native annotation and legacy migration option: JUnit 5.13.4 User Guide. A versioned JUnit 5.7.0-M1 guide also explicitly identifies @Disabled as the replacement for the no-longer-native @Ignore: JUnit 5.7.0-M1 User Guide.
Keep legacy @Ignore in a Jupiter project
If migration constraints mean existing tests must keep JUnit 4’s annotation while running on Jupiter, configure the documented migration support. Add the junit-jupiter-migrationsupport dependency that matches the project’s JUnit setup, then either register IgnoreCondition directly with @ExtendWith or use @EnableJUnit4MigrationSupport, which registers it. This is a compatibility path; @Disabled remains Jupiter’s built-in choice.

Troubleshooting ignored tests
- The method still runs: Verify that it is a JUnit 4 test with both
@Testand@Ignorefrom theorg.junitpackage, and confirm which framework and runner execute it. - Jupiter does not honor @Ignore: Jupiter’s native disable annotation is
@Disabled. For legacy JUnit 4 annotations, ensure the migrationsupport dependency and one of the documented registrations are in place. - The skipped test is missing from the report: Removing
@Testor commenting out the test prevents a runner from reporting it as ignored. Keep the test annotated and use a JUnit 4 runner that reports ignored tests. - The report says only “ignored” with no explanation: Set the optional string value on
@Ignoreto give the team a reason and a re-enable condition.
