Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsStart with the exact exception in the traceback: it usually tells you whether Selenium could not find an element, could not interact with it, lost a reference after a page change, or failed to complete a wait. For elements that appear asynchronously, use WebDriverWait with the condition the next action actually requires instead of guessing with time.sleep(). Catch a Selenium exception only when your code has a defined, safe recovery.
Diagnose the exception before changing the code
Read the complete traceback and identify both the exception class and the WebDriver command that raised it. The class narrows the problem; it does not prove a single root cause. Selenium’s exception reference describes common errors, but the right fix depends on the page state and the operation your script attempted.
- Note the exact failing command and exception name.
- Check whether the locator is correct and whether Selenium is in the intended page, frame, or window context.
- Decide what state the next operation requires: presence, visibility, clickability, text, an alert, or a stale old reference.
- Wait for that state if it is expected to arrive; otherwise correct the locator, context, or flow.
What common Selenium exceptions mean
| Exception | Meaning and diagnostic direction |
|---|---|
NoSuchElementException |
Selenium could not find an element. Verify the selector and current page or context. If dynamic content has not arrived yet, wait for the required state. |
TimeoutException |
A command or wait did not finish within the available time. For a wait, inspect the specific condition that never became true before increasing the timeout. |
StaleElementReferenceException |
The saved element reference no longer represents the current DOM element. After the relevant page or DOM change, locate the element again. |
ElementClickInterceptedException |
Another element obscured the click target. Check for an overlay or layout change and wait for the target to be unobstructed. |
ElementNotInteractableException |
The requested interaction cannot proceed in the element’s current state or paint order. Check visibility, enabled state, and whether the page has reached the state needed for the interaction. |
NoSuchWindowException |
The requested window target does not exist. Check the selected window handle and whether that window is still open. |
UnexpectedAlertPresentException |
An alert appeared when the command did not expect one. Handle the alert explicitly or correct the flow that caused it. |
SessionNotCreatedException |
WebDriver could not create a new session. Investigate browser and driver startup and session configuration; the details depend on the environment. |
Wait for the state the next action needs
A page reaching document readyState does not guarantee that JavaScript-driven content or controls are ready. Selenium’s wait guidance explains why navigation completion and application readiness can differ. A fixed sleep pauses for a predetermined duration whether the state arrives quickly, slowly, or not at all. An explicit wait polls for a condition and stops when it succeeds or times out.
The following example uses Selenium’s Python API and an explicit wait. The URL and selector are examples; replace them with the page and locator used by your test.

from selenium.webdriver.common.by import By
from selenium.webdriver.support import expected_conditions as EC
from selenium.webdriver.support.ui import WebDriverWait
URL = "https://example.com"
BUTTON = (By.CSS_SELECTOR, "button.submit")
options = webdriver.ChromeOptions()
driver = webdriver.Chrome(options=options)
try:
driver.get(URL)
wait = WebDriverWait(driver, 10)
button = wait.until(EC.element_to_be_clickable(BUTTON))
button.click()
except TimeoutException:
print(f"Timed out waiting for clickable element: {BUTTON}")
raise
finally:
driver.quit()
WebDriverWait takes a timeout in seconds. Its documented default polling interval is 0.5 seconds, and it ignores NoSuchElementException by default while polling. It provides until and until_not; a wait that does not satisfy its condition raises TimeoutException. These are API defaults, not guarantees about how quickly a particular site responds. See the Python WebDriverWait API and its expected conditions.
Choose the matching expected condition
| What the next step needs | Condition to use |
|---|---|
| The element must exist in the DOM; visibility is not required yet. | EC.presence_of_element_located(locator) |
| The element must be displayed, for example before reading visible content. | EC.visibility_of_element_located(locator) |
| The element must be visible and enabled for a click. | EC.element_to_be_clickable(locator) |
| An earlier element reference must leave the DOM after a transition. | EC.staleness_of(old_element) |
| An alert must appear before it can be handled. | EC.alert_is_present() |
| Text must become visible in an element. | EC.text_to_be_present_in_element(locator, text) |
Presence alone does not mean that an element is visible or clickable. Expected conditions also include combinations such as all_of, any_of, and none_of; combine conditions only when the operation genuinely depends on those states.

Fix common failure patterns
NoSuchElementException: confirm selector, context, and timing
First validate the locator against the current page and check that the element belongs to the active document or browsing context. If the page is still loading or JavaScript inserts the element later, wait for its presence or visibility as appropriate. A wait cannot fix a selector that never matches or a script looking in the wrong context.
StaleElementReferenceException: reacquire after a DOM change
A saved element handle can become obsolete when navigation or a DOM update replaces the element. Wait for the transition you expect, then call find_element again rather than repeatedly using the old reference. Retry only if that transition is expected and the next action remains safe.

Click errors: inspect what is blocking interaction
For an intercepted click, inspect overlays, banners, and layout shifts that may cover the target. For a non-interactable error, confirm the element is visible and enabled and that the page is in the required state. Wait for the specific blocker or state to change; do not treat a blind retry as a fix.
Timeout: investigate the unmet condition
Identify which condition timed out, then verify its locator, page state, window or frame context, and the transition your script assumes. Increase the timeout only when the condition is correct and the operation reasonably needs more time. If the expected state is impossible because of a persistent page defect, let the test fail with useful diagnostics.
Window, alert, and session failures
For a missing window, verify the handle selection and that the window has not closed. For an unexpected alert, detect and handle it when the flow permits, or fix the action that produced it. A session creation failure happens before normal page interactions, so inspect browser and driver startup and session configuration rather than changing element waits.

Catch exceptions narrowly and preserve diagnostics
Use try/except around the operation with a known recovery path, not around an entire test or workflow. Log relevant context such as the locator and current operation, and keep the traceback when reporting the failure. Continue only when there is a safe next step; otherwise re-raise the exception so the test does not conceal a real defect.

from selenium.common.exceptions import NoSuchElementException
from selenium.webdriver.common.by import By

submit = (By.CSS_SELECTOR, "button.submit")
try:
driver.find_element(*submit).click()
except NoSuchElementException:
log.exception("Submit control was missing; locator=%r", submit)
raise
Do not add exceptions to a wait’s ignored-exception list merely to make it continue. The default ignored exception is NoSuchElementException; any additional ignored error should be transient in the specific operation and have a understood recovery outcome. Selenium documents exception types, not one universal retry policy for every application.

If the job is capturing a page image or PDF rather than testing browser interactions, ScreenshotNeo provides a screenshot API and MCP server. A single request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; its cleanup can accept consent banners and remove known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. CAPTCHA or bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed. AI agents can use its MCP tools, including take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.
