To close one Selenium tab, switch WebDriver to that tab and call driver.close(). If you want to keep working, switch to another tab that is still open. Use driver.quit() only when you want to end the whole browser session.
Close the selected tab and continue
Selenium closes the currently selected window context; close() does not choose another tab for you. Keep the handle of the tab you want to return to, switch to the tab you want to close, close it, then switch back to the still-open handle:

driver.switch_to.window(original)This Python sequence assumes WebDriver is already on the tab to close and that original still refers to an open tab. For multiple tabs, store the specific handle you intend to return to; do not rely on tab ordering. Selenium’s Working with windows and tabs guide advises closing a tab that is not the last one and switching back to the previously used window.
Python example when you need to select the tab first

driver.switch_to.window(original)Only use handles[1] if you have confirmed that it is the tab you mean to close. Identify and retain the desired handle explicitly in your own flow.

Choose between close() and quit()

Handle the closed-window error
After close(), WebDriver remains associated with the context it just closed. If you issue page commands before switching to a valid remaining handle, Selenium can raise a No Such Window Exception. Recover by switching to a handle that is still open:

driver.switch_to.window(remaining_handle)If no tabs remain, there is no open context to continue using; finish session cleanup with driver.quit().
Selenium version note
Selenium’s guide marks its new-window API as available in Selenium 4 and later. The close-and-switch workflow applies to the selected window context; binding method names differ, as shown above. See the official Selenium guide for the current language-specific examples.
