How do you test a website? Start with the tasks people need to complete, identify what could go wrong, and choose tests that produce evidence about those risks. A useful testing plan combines repeatable checks of visible behavior with human accessibility and usability review, performance measurements, and security assessment where appropriate. No single scan or launch-day checklist can establish that a site works well for everyone.
What website testing should cover
Website testing is a set of methods for answering different questions, not one test with one pass/fail result. A checkout flow can work while keyboard navigation fails; a fast lab run can disagree with real-user performance; an automated scan can miss an accessibility barrier. Plan around the site’s user journeys and the consequences of failure.
| Testing area | Question it helps answer | Useful evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Functional and workflow | Can people complete important tasks, including expected error cases? | Observed page behavior, assertions, and reproducible test results |
| Accessibility and usability | Can people with different abilities perceive, understand, and operate the site? | Automated findings, expert review, and feedback from users |
| Performance | How quickly and stably does the site respond in a test environment and for real visitors? | Lab measurements and field data, interpreted separately |
| Security | Do application controls resist the risks relevant to this site? | Documented checks, findings, impact, and mitigation |
| Experiments | Which page variant best meets a defined goal without misleading search engines? | Variant assignment and enough relevant user-response data |
Choose a method by the risk it covers, the evidence it produces, how closely its conditions resemble actual use, and what the result cannot establish. The methods below are complementary; they are not a universal stack or a fixed testing ratio.
Functional testing: verify what users can do
Choose the right level of check
Focused component or code-level checks can isolate a small behavior and make failures easier to diagnose. Browser-based end-to-end tests exercise a complete user-facing flow across pages and interactions. Static analysis can flag some issues without running the site. A practical strategy selects among these approaches according to the behavior and risk being checked; not every site needs the same distribution of test types. The web.dev testing curriculum discusses component tests, automated-testing types, static analysis, test environments, assertions, and prioritization.

Make browser tests reflect user-visible behavior
Playwright recommends testing behavior users can see and interact with rather than binding tests to internal implementation details. Keep each test isolated, with its own relevant data, storage, and browser state, so its result does not depend on a previous run. Isolation makes failures more reproducible and easier to investigate.
For example, a sign-up test can submit valid and invalid information and check the messages and next steps presented to the user. Give the test its own account or session so one run cannot alter what another run expects. This is an example of applying test-isolation guidance, not a guarantee that every sign-up flow has been covered.

Accessibility testing needs automation and people
WCAG success criteria are testable, but accessibility evaluation involves both automated checks and human judgment. W3C’s WAI guidance recommends checking accessibility early and throughout development, and notes that no single tool can determine whether a site is accessible. Evaluators need to understand how people with disabilities use the web; usability testing should include disabled users where possible.
Automated checks can identify some common problems, including poor contrast, missing labels, and duplicate IDs. Playwright’s accessibility guidance likewise recommends combining automated checks with manual review and inclusive user testing. A scan reporting no violations does not prove that a site is accessible or conforms to WCAG. Review keyboard operation, focus order and visibility, page structure, understandable instructions, and actual task completion with appropriate human evaluation.

Performance testing: interpret lab and field evidence separately
Lab tests run under controlled or simulated device and network conditions. Field data represents anonymized experience from real visitors using varied devices and connections. The two can disagree: a strong lab result is not, by itself, evidence that all visitors have a good experience. Google for Developers recommends evaluating Core Web Vitals at the 75th percentile across mobile and desktop rather than treating one lab score as the whole experience.
| Metric | Google’s current recommended threshold | What it describes |
|---|---|---|
| Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) | Within 2.5 seconds | Loading performance |
| Interaction to Next Paint (INP) | Within 200 milliseconds | Responsiveness to interactions |
| Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) | Within 0.1 | Visual stability |
These are recommended thresholds, not a claim that every site or every visit will meet them. Use lab runs to reproduce conditions and investigate changes; use field data, where available, to understand the experience people actually encounter. Segment by mobile and desktop and investigate the underlying pages and conditions instead of relying on a single aggregate score.

Website experiments without search cloaking
Website testing can mean comparing page versions and collecting data about user response. An A/B test compares two or more versions of a change. A multivariate test varies multiple elements to study individual effects and possible interactions. Define the change and the outcome you want to measure before interpreting the result.
Do not serve Googlebot a different version from the one users see. Google Search Central describes cloaking as against its spam policies whether it is implemented with server logic or robots.txt. There is no universally correct test duration: the time needed depends on traffic, conversion rates, and whether enough data has accumulated for a reliable decision.

Security testing: use a method, report impact
The OWASP Web Security Testing Guide (WSTG) is a maintained methodology and technique reference for web applications and services, not a compliance certificate. It addresses areas including identity, authentication, authorization, sessions, input handling, error handling, cryptography, business logic, and client-side behavior. Check the OWASP project page for the current guide version before using it; version status can change.
Security checks should be systematic and selected for the application and its risks. A useful finding explains the affected condition, its impact, and a mitigation or technical solution. Testing is not an exact science and cannot enumerate every possible weakness, so a test report is one input to broader risk assessment—not a guarantee that an application is secure.
A practical website testing workflow
- Map critical journeys and risks. List the tasks that matter—such as signing up, searching, paying, or contacting support—and the plausible failures: broken behavior, inaccessible interactions, slow or unstable pages, search-experiment side effects, or security weaknesses.
- Match each question to a suitable method. Automate repeatable user-visible behavior; use knowledgeable manual review and inclusive usability testing for accessibility; combine lab and field performance signals where available; document security checks and findings.
- Choose representative conditions. Consider the relevant browsers, devices, user states, and test data. Isolate browser-test state. For performance, examine mobile and desktop rather than assuming one device represents everyone. There is no universal device matrix established by these methods.
- Run checks and retain evidence. Record what was tested, the environment and conditions, observed behavior or measurements, and any known limitations. A screenshot can document a visual state, but it does not establish that a workflow, accessibility requirement, performance target, or security control passes.
- Prioritize and retest fixes. Address issues according to user impact and risk. After a change, rerun the affected checks and relevant neighboring flows so the correction does not hide a regression.
- Report the result precisely. Separate automated findings from human review, lab readings from field data, and tested controls from unexamined risks. For security findings, state impact and mitigation; for accessibility, do not equate a clean automated scan with conformance.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a rendered-page screenshot as visual evidence, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request option. It is a screenshot API, not a replacement for functional, accessibility, performance, or security testing. One GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. The example below saves a WebP screenshot of Stripe; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Equivalent minimal examples:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. See ScreenshotNeo and sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card required.

- Calling one green check a full pass: Different methods cover different risks; state exactly what the check did and did not test.
- Letting tests share hidden state: Shared accounts, cookies, or storage can make browser results order-dependent. Isolate relevant test data and state.
- Using only automation for accessibility: Automated rules catch some issues, but human evaluation and disabled users’ experience remain important.
- Treating a lab score as real-user evidence: Lab and field conditions differ. Interpret each signal in context and across device categories.
- Ending security work at a scan: Findings need impact and mitigation, and the assessment cannot guarantee that all weaknesses were found.
- Stopping at launch day: Changes to code, content, integrations, and dependencies can affect journeys after release. Recheck the flows and risks affected by meaningful changes.
Frequently asked questions
Is website testing only something to do before launch?
No. Revisit relevant checks when the site or its dependencies change, and use ongoing evidence such as field performance data where it is available.
Can a screenshot prove that a page passed testing?
No. A screenshot records a visual state at a point in time. It cannot by itself establish that interactive behavior, accessibility, speed for real visitors, or security controls are correct.
