A reliable cross-browser setup starts with the browsers and devices your site promises to support, then runs the same test suite against a controlled set of browser engines. For a practical baseline, use Playwright projects for Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit; install the browser binaries that match your Playwright version; and add branded Chrome, Edge, or physical mobile devices only when your support policy calls for them. Playwright’s WebKit build is not Safari, so it does not replace Safari validation.

1. Choose the browser and device matrix your site needs

Do not begin by trying to test every possible browser, version, operating system, and device. First define what your application supports. Use your product’s support policy and available audience or analytics evidence to decide which desktop browsers, mobile browsers, operating systems, and device classes belong in the matrix. There is no universally correct version or device list for every site.

  • Engine coverage: Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit give you a useful starting baseline across major browser engines.
  • Branded-browser coverage: Add Chrome or Edge channels when your regression policy targets those public browsers or their specific behavior.
  • Mobile coverage: Use emulation for broad layout and flow checks. Add physical devices when real-device behavior is important to your support commitments.
  • Remote coverage: Consider a hosted browser or device grid when the combinations you need are impractical to maintain locally.

Write down the matrix and the reason for each entry. A short, deliberate matrix is easier to maintain than a broad list that no one can explain or keep current.

2. Install Playwright and its matching browsers

Playwright’s browser binaries are version-coupled to the Playwright package: “Each version of Playwright needs specific versions of browser binaries to operate.” Install browsers through the Playwright CLI rather than assuming a system browser will match. See the Playwright browser documentation.

Install the test dependency

For a JavaScript or TypeScript project, install Playwright Test using your package manager so the dependency is recorded in the project and its lockfile. For npm:

npm install --save-dev @playwright/test

Install browser binaries

From the project directory, install Playwright’s default browsers:

npx playwright install

Or select an engine explicitly, such as WebKit:

npx playwright install webkit

When CI machines need operating-system dependencies as well as browser binaries, install both. For example:

npx playwright install --with-deps chromium

You can also install OS dependencies separately with npx playwright install-deps. The exact dependencies depend on the operating system and browser being installed.

3. Configure separate browser projects

Projects let the same tests run with different browser options. This example creates three local engine projects and a small cross-browser test. Save the configuration as playwright.config.ts and the test as tests/smoke.spec.ts.

playwright.config.ts

Playwright installs browser binaries through its CLI and updates the required versions as Playwright releases change. Include browser installation in your CI setup and repeat it when upgrading Playwright; otherwise, the installed browser may no longer match the framework version. Pin the dependency through your repository’s package lockfile for repeatable installs.

4. Know what each browser project proves

Chromium is not automatically branded Chrome or Edge

Playwright’s default Chromium project uses open-source Chromium. It is not automatically a test of installed branded Chrome or Microsoft Edge. When those public-browser channels are in scope, configure the relevant channel explicitly and ensure the corresponding browser is available in the environment. This matters for browser-specific features, media codecs, or enterprise policy behavior.

WebKit is not branded Safari

Playwright’s WebKit build comes from WebKit main-branch sources; it is not branded Safari. A passing WebKit project is useful engine coverage, but it does not establish that your site behaves identically in Safari. If Safari support is a requirement, validate it in the target Safari environment as part of the broader matrix.

Emulated devices are not physical devices

Device profiles and viewport emulation help you catch responsive layout and broad interaction issues at scale. They do not reproduce every behavior of a physical phone, operating system, or browser. Use actual devices or a hosted device service when those differences matter to the site’s support policy.

5. Add mobile and remote coverage when justified

Start mobile testing with emulation

Playwright device profiles can give tests mobile-oriented viewports and device settings. Choose profiles based on the devices and operating systems you intend to support rather than treating a preset list as universally representative. Emulation is useful for responsive layout checks and common mobile flows; it is not a substitute for physical-device validation where hardware or OS behavior is relevant.

Use a hosted grid for combinations you cannot maintain locally

A remote provider can supply browser and operating-system combinations beyond the machines available to your team. BrowserStack documents Playwright browser, OS, and device capabilities; its currently supported combinations can change, so check the live BrowserStack supported Playwright versions, browsers, and OSes documentation when selecting capabilities. For self-hosted infrastructure, consult its Playwright self-hosted setup documentation. Treat provider availability and exact version combinations as implementation-time details, not permanent values to copy into a long-lived test plan.

Treat Selenium Grid connection as an optional experiment

Playwright’s documented Selenium Grid integration is labeled experimental. The .NET documentation describes a Selenium 4 and Chrome DevTools Protocol websocket dependency and documents remote connections to Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge, not general remote Firefox or WebKit coverage. Confirm that the Selenium WebDriver grid works independently before connecting Playwright, and do not assume this integration provides supported remote coverage for every Playwright engine. See Playwright’s Selenium Grid documentation.

6. Keep local and CI runs reproducible

  • Commit the package lockfile and install dependencies from it in CI.
  • Install the Playwright-matched browser binaries in CI as part of setup.
  • Record project names and the browser/device matrix so failures can be traced to a specific target.
  • Keep the same test assertions across projects unless a documented browser-specific requirement needs a separate expectation.
  • When changing Playwright versions, refresh the browser installation and run the full matrix before merging.

This approach keeps the framework, binaries, and declared test targets aligned without tying the setup to a particular CI vendor.

7. Troubleshoot common setup failures

Playwright reports that a browser executable is missing

Cause: The browser binaries were not installed, or the installed binaries do not match the project’s Playwright version.

Browser installation fails on a Linux runner

Cause: Required operating-system packages may be absent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix: Use npx playwright install --with-deps chromium for Chromium and its dependencies, or use npx playwright install-deps where appropriate for the runner and selected browsers.

A Chromium pass is mistaken for a Chrome or Edge pass

Cause: The default Playwright Chromium project is open-source Chromium rather than a branded channel.

Fix: Configure the branded Chrome or Edge channel explicitly when that public browser is a stated target, and verify that it is installed in the test environment.

A WebKit pass is reported as proof of Safari compatibility

Cause: Playwright WebKit is not branded Safari.

Fix: Keep WebKit as engine coverage, but validate Safari separately when Safari behavior is part of your support commitment.

A mobile test passes in emulation but fails on a phone

Cause: A simulated viewport or device profile does not reproduce every physical-device and OS condition.

Fix: Reproduce the issue on the affected target and expand the matrix to actual devices or an appropriate hosted device service if those conditions matter to supported users.

A remote browser capability is unavailable

Cause: Hosted providers revise supported versions, operating systems, and device availability.

Fix: Verify the provider’s current capability documentation when configuring the test run instead of relying on a static browser-version list.

Or skip the browser setup

If your immediate need is a screenshot rather than an interactive cross-browser test suite, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. It does not replace Playwright assertions or browser/device validation. One GET request returns an image or PDF; for example, save a WebP capture with cURL:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for the API parameters and setup. Before capture, it accepts cookie/consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.
