Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsColdMock is a software project for practicing spoken technical-interview answers. Its author, Subhadip Guchhait, describes a setup that runs a language model locally, listens through a browser, asks follow-up questions, and produces a closing scorecard. Those details come from the project account, not independent product testing: they do not establish that its grading is reliable or that practice improves interview outcomes.
What ColdMock is designed to do
Guchhait says he built ColdMock for a college friend who could solve coding problems but struggled to explain systems concepts aloud. The goal was rapid-fire oral practice without relying on a cloud service for each reply. That motivation is the author’s account, rather than an independently measured comparison of interview tools or their costs.
ColdMock is software, not a physical interview device. The described practice session presents a backend or systems scenario, accepts a spoken answer, generates a follow-up based on that answer, and ends with a scorecard covering strengths, blind spots, and a hiring verdict. The author also says blank or one-word responses fail automatically. These are reported design behaviors; the account does not provide independent testing to confirm how consistently they work.
How the reported system is assembled
The project account describes four main parts:
- Language model: Google Gemma 2 (2B), run locally through Ollama.
- Backend: FastAPI, used to manage interview state and grading prompts.
- Browser interface: vanilla HTML and JavaScript, with Tailwind CSS.
- Speech: the browser Web Speech API, for spoken interaction.
The author says the system works offline and keeps audio and interview notes on the laptop. The account does not include an independent data-flow inspection, security audit, or supported-platform matrix, so those privacy and compatibility claims should be understood as the author’s description rather than verified guarantees.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What happens during a practice round
- Hear a scenario. ColdMock presents a backend or systems question, according to the project account.
- Answer aloud. The user speaks into the laptop microphone using the browser-based speech feature.
- Wait for submission. The author says five seconds of silence triggers automatic submission. No independently reproduced test establishes how this behaves in different browsers or speaking conditions.
- Respond to a follow-up. The model is intended to generate an unscripted question based on the answer rather than simply advance through a fixed list.
- Review the scorecard. The reported session ends with strengths, blind spots, and a hiring verdict; blank or one-word answers are described as automatic failures.
What the database-lock example shows
Guchhait recounts one friend completing a three-question database-lock drill. When the friend suggested read replicas, ColdMock reportedly asked about replication lag. The friend is quoted by Guchhait as saying, “That exact question tripped me up in an interview last month.”
The example illustrates the intended interaction: a follow-up can probe a consequence of a proposed solution. It is one reported practice session, however, and cannot establish the accuracy of the system’s assessments, whether users learn from it, or whether it predicts hiring decisions.

How much weight to give the score and speaking style
A generated hiring verdict is feedback from the tool, not evidence of how an employer would evaluate a candidate. The project account provides no validation data for its scoring, no comparison against recruiter judgments, and no measured hiring or learning outcomes. Treat the scorecard as a prompt for review, not a dependable pass/fail signal.
Broader research also cautions against treating fluency as a proxy for interview performance. A 2023 Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication study analyzed 134 valid student responses in a mock job interview. Students who believed AI rather than a human recruiter would evaluate them reported higher uncertainty and lower social presence. Articulation rate was higher in the AI-evaluation condition, but the difference was significant only at the 0.10 level; most other speech-fluency measures did not differ significantly at the conventional 0.05 level.

The study examined participants’ beliefs about who would evaluate them. It did not test an autonomous interviewer generating adaptive follow-ups, and it did not evaluate ColdMock. Its authors also caution that faster speech or fewer pauses may reflect anxiety or reduced attention to the listener; smoother delivery alone does not show that an answer is better.

What a reader can and cannot conclude
- Supported by the project account: ColdMock is presented as a local, voice-based technical-interview practice project, with a model, browser speech features, adaptive follow-ups, and a closing scorecard.
- Not independently established: that the described offline and privacy behavior holds across configurations, that grading is accurate, or that practice improves performance or employment outcomes.
- Useful context, not a product verdict: the 2023 student study describes reactions to AI evaluation in a different mock-interview setup, not ColdMock’s quality or effectiveness.
