Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBuild your browser test plan around your platform’s published support promises and the tasks learners and instructors actually need to complete. Test representative end-to-end workflows across prioritized browser and device combinations, and include accessibility checks: a page that renders correctly may still be unusable with a keyboard, screen reader, voice input, captions, or other assistive technology.
What browser compatibility testing should cover
Compatibility testing asks whether a learning platform works as intended in the browsers, operating systems, and device contexts it claims to support. It should check more than whether a page loads: examine whether content is visible, controls work, navigation and focus behave as expected, media is usable, and learners can finish important tasks.
Accessibility is part of that evaluation, not a separate polish pass. W3C’s education guidance identifies needs on both sides of an LMS: instructors and other users with disabilities must be able to use the authoring tool, and students need accessible course content. W3C addresses the authoring-tool side through ATAG Part A, and support for creating accessible content through ATAG Part B. For example, an instructor may be able to upload content but unable to review its preview using a screen reader.
Set the scope before selecting browsers or tools. A release check, a focused defect investigation, an accessibility review, a procurement evaluation, and a public conformance statement do not necessarily require the same coverage. WCAG-EM 2.0, a W3C Group Note dated 23 July 2026, provides a technology-agnostic approach for evaluating representative samples against WCAG 2: define the scope, explore the product, select samples, evaluate them, and report findings. It is informative methodology; it does not add to or replace WCAG requirements.

How to build a browser and device matrix
Start with the platform’s own support policy
Record the LMS’s published browser families, minimum versions, operating systems, device types, and any stated limitations. Do not substitute a universal browser list: supported combinations depend on the platform and can change. Set a policy for refreshing the matrix when the platform updates its requirements or browser versions change.
MIT Learn/MITx Online is one dated example, not a general LMS standard. Its support article, accessed 3 October 2026, says no specific browser is required and that courseware can be viewed on most modern browsers, while recommending the combinations below. It also cautions that some functionality may not be supported on mobile and that small screens are not optimized.
| Platform-specific recommendation | Qualification |
|---|---|
| Chrome 100 or later | MIT Learn/MITx Online recommendation accessed 3 October 2026. |
| Firefox | MIT Learn/MITx Online recommendation accessed 3 October 2026; no minimum version is stated here. |
| Microsoft Edge | MIT Learn/MITx Online recommendation accessed 3 October 2026; no minimum version is stated here. |
| Safari 15 or later | MIT Learn/MITx Online recommendation accessed 3 October 2026. |
| Chrome for Android | MIT Learn/MITx Online recommendation accessed 3 October 2026. |
| Safari for iOS | MIT Learn/MITx Online recommendation accessed 3 October 2026. |
Prioritize combinations using learner context
Use learner analytics, support cases, and known high-risk workflows if available to decide which supported combinations need the most frequent or deepest coverage. Keep desktop and mobile form factors distinct where the experience differs. Record your prioritization rationale so that a smaller release matrix is an intentional risk decision, not an accidental omission.

Check the date and applicability of every compatibility claim before adopting it. The Open edX learner guide describes testing on current and previous versions of several browsers, but its 2015 copyright and legacy operating-system and Internet Explorer tables make it unsuitable as a current support matrix. It illustrates a version-policy pattern only; verify the active policy for your own platform.
Choose representative pages and complete workflows
Test journeys, not just the home page. WCAG-EM recommends exploring common views, essential functionality, technologies, and sample types, then selecting structured and random samples and complete processes. Dynamic web applications typically warrant a larger sample because different views and interactions may introduce different problems.
Adapt the following workflow set to features your LMS actually provides; these are test-planning examples, not a claim that every platform includes every feature.

- Participate and track progress: use discussions and progress views where the platform provides them.
- Author and teach: exercise instructor access, create or edit course content, and preview it as learners will see it.
Include both routine and higher-risk samples, such as a long lesson, a form with validation, a video with captions, or an interactive component. The point is to select samples that expose different content and functionality, rather than to repeat the same easy page across the matrix.
Run compatibility checks across prioritized combinations
- Prepare the test setup. Record the LMS deployment and role, browser and operating-system versions, device or viewport, account permissions, and any relevant assistive-technology setup. Use the same test data and starting conditions when comparing combinations.
- Complete the selected workflow. Follow the same steps in each prioritized combination. Check content visibility, layout, controls, navigation, focus, media, form behavior, and whether the task can be completed.
- Evaluate accessibility as you go. Try keyboard-only operation; examine screen-reader interpretation and focus order; check zoom and reflow; and review captions or transcripts where media is present. For authoring tasks, verify that instructors can operate the tool and that previews are accessible enough to review content.
- Record the result at the point of failure. Capture exact reproduction steps, expected and actual behavior, browser and OS versions, impact on the learner or instructor, and a screenshot or recording when useful. Note whether a workaround exists, but do not treat a workaround as proof the defect is resolved.
- Retest after a fix. Repeat the original steps on the affected combination and any other combinations plausibly affected by the change. Mark the defect as retested only when the recorded failure no longer occurs.
Include accessibility evaluation and report its limits
Automated checks can identify some detectable issues, but they cannot determine whether the whole learning experience is accessible. W3C’s Evaluating Web Accessibility Overview states: “There are evaluation tools that help with evaluation. However, no tool alone can determine if a site meets accessibility standards. Knowledgeable human evaluation is required to determine if a site is accessible.” Use automation as one part of an evaluation that also includes task-based manual review and, where feasible, feedback from disabled users.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →For an LMS, review both the student-facing experience and the authoring workflow. Check whether keyboard, voice, or switch access can operate essential controls; whether previews can be navigated; and whether authoring features help instructors provide text alternatives and otherwise create accessible content. A successful automated scan or a page that looks correct does not establish that these tasks work.

Choose tools to match the test plan
Compare tools and methods against the work you need to do, not a feature checklist in isolation. W3C notes that evaluation tools vary in scope and type; its vendor-submitted tool list is not a W3C endorsement. Consider:
- Browser realism: whether testing uses real browsers and devices or emulation, and which operating systems and browser versions are available.
- Workflow access: whether you can reach password-protected pages and exercise dynamic, multi-step tasks.
- Evaluation method: what can be automated, what requires manual interaction, and whether accessibility review fits your process.
- Repeatability: whether the same setup can be run again after a change and whether results identify the tested environment.
- Development fit: whether the approach integrates with your CI or development process and provides reporting appropriate to your team.
BrowserStack is one commercial example: its official site lists live manual cross-browser testing, browser automation, web testing on real browsers, and accessibility testing. That listing describes the vendor’s offerings; it is not an independent comparative endorsement. Confirm current availability and fit directly with the provider.

Screenshots can help document visible rendering differences, but a screenshot cannot prove that a workflow completes, that keyboard focus works, or that a screen reader can use the page. Treat visual captures as evidence within a broader test, not as a replacement for browser and accessibility evaluation.
Or skip the browser setup:
If you need a repeatable visual capture of a URL as one piece of the evidence, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API; it does not replace testing the page in the browser and assistive-technology combinations in your matrix. One cURL example:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for setup and options. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status. It also offers an MCP server with screenshot, page-info, and PDF-capture tools for AI agents. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
