No—not for every website. Automated browser testing is worth adding when an important user journey, browser-specific behavior, or the cost of a release failure justifies the setup and maintenance. For many teams, the right start is a small, isolated suite that checks a few high-value journeys, supported by lower-level tests and manual exploration.
What browser automation checks
Browser automation drives a browser through actions a person might take—such as clicking links, entering text, and submitting forms—and checks what happens in the rendered site. That makes it useful for questions lower-level tests cannot answer on their own: can someone complete a meaningful workflow, and do they see the expected result?
The W3C’s Browser Testing and Tools Working Group Charter describes browser testing automation as a way to simulate user interaction. The WebDriver specification defines a platform-neutral interface for controlling browsers. These describe browser control, not a requirement that every site adopt an automated suite.
When it is worth automating
Prioritize browser tests when a failure would materially affect users or the business, when a workflow crosses multiple UI steps or system boundaries, or when the site depends on browser-specific behavior. Practical first candidates include sign-in, search, checkout or another important submission, navigation, and core create-or-edit flows.

Assert what a user can observe: a confirmation message, changed content, or the destination after navigation. Avoid tying a test to internal function names, data structures, or CSS classes when a user-visible assertion can verify the same outcome. Playwright’s best-practices guide recommends user-visible tests and isolated test state.
A proportionate starting point
- Identify the user journeys where failure would be most costly or disruptive.
- Choose a small number of end-to-end checks for those journeys, rather than automating every screen or interaction.
- Give each test its own data and browser state so one test’s cookies, storage, or changes do not break another.
- Run the suite where it can inform release decisions, and investigate flaky results instead of treating retries as a permanent fix.
There is no universal minimum number of tests or adoption threshold. For a small site with few interactions and low failure impact, a manual regression checklist plus lower-level automated tests may be a more proportionate choice. That is a risk-based judgment, not a minimum prescribed by the cited guidance.

Choosing browsers and platforms to test
Cross-browser coverage is a decision, not an automatic requirement to test every possible browser and device. Playwright documents support for Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit projects, as well as optional branded Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge channels. Select the coverage that matches your audience and the behavior your product relies on.

To decide how far to extend the matrix, consider which browsers and devices your users rely on, which browser-specific features could break important workflows, whether an engine is faithful enough for the behavior under test, and how much CI time and maintenance your team can support. Playwright’s browser guide explains the distinctions between bundled engines, stable channels, and platform-specific runs; it does not set a universal market-share threshold or weighting for these trade-offs.

What browser automation does not replace
Browser tests are one layer of quality checks, not a substitute for unit or component tests, accessibility checks, security and performance testing, or exploratory manual testing. A browser journey can reveal whether a user-visible flow works, but it is not a complete assessment of every property of a website.
Google’s frontend testing guidance discusses varied testing concerns and tool categories. Manual exploration remains useful for investigating behavior and scenarios that a small set of scripted journeys may not cover.

Costs, reliability, and upkeep
Browser tests require a dependable environment as well as test code. Google’s Chrome for Testing material notes that setting up an adequate browser-testing environment has been a recurring developer pain point. Playwright recommends isolation—including separate storage, cookies, and data—to reduce cascading failures, and user-visible assertions to make tests more resilient.
- Keep the suite focused on critical workflows; unnecessary duplication adds maintenance without necessarily adding useful coverage.
- Use isolated test state so tests do not depend on execution order or shared browser data.
- When a test flakes, investigate timing, shared state, or environment instability rather than normalizing retries as the cure.
- Update Playwright and its browser binaries deliberately. Newer versions can help surface issues ahead of browser releases; stable branded channels are an option when testing current-release behavior is the goal.
- Account for the additional execution time and maintenance when expanding browser and platform coverage.
