Exception handling lets a program respond when an operation fails: code in a protected region may raise an exception, a matching handler can recover or report the problem, and a failure with no suitable handler can propagate to a caller. Cleanup is a separate responsibility. Not every language uses exceptions for ordinary errors, and catching every failure is rarely safe.

What exception handling does

An exception is a way for a program to signal that an operation could not proceed normally. The operation might fail because a file is missing, input is invalid, or a network request cannot be completed. The language and runtime determine how such failures are represented and how code can respond.

In an exception-based language, the usual flow is:

  1. Run potentially failing work inside a protected region.
  2. If an exception occurs, look for a handler that matches it.
  3. Handle it only if this layer can leave the program in a valid, understood state; otherwise let it propagate.
  4. Run required cleanup as control leaves the relevant scope.

A handler is not necessarily beside the operation that failed. For example, C# searches up the call stack for a matching catch, while Python can pass an unmatched exception to an enclosing try statement. The precise behavior and syntax vary by language.

A practical Python example

This example reads a text file, handles only the expected missing-file case, and gives the caller a clear result. Python’s with statement manages closing the file when the block exits, so cleanup is not confused with recovery.

from pathlib import Path

def read_settings(path: Path) -> str | None:
    try:
        with path.open(encoding="utf-8") as settings_file:
            return settings_file.read()
    except FileNotFoundError:
        print(f"Settings file not found: {path}")
        return None

settings = read_settings(Path("settings.txt"))
if settings is None:
    # Continue only with a documented safe default or stop this operation.
    print("Using the application's default settings.")

The handler is narrow: it responds to the specific condition for which this function has a safe policy. If the file exists but cannot be decoded, or another unexpected failure occurs, this code does not pretend it has been resolved. That exception can reach a caller able to make a better decision, or remain unhandled and stop execution with an error report.

The example uses Python’s with resource-management idiom rather than a finally block. In languages and situations where explicit cleanup is appropriate, a finally clause is for actions such as releasing a resource as control leaves the protected region; it does not repair the failure.

When to catch an exception

Catch an exception at the layer that can take a meaningful action: restore a known state, retry under a defined policy, present a useful message, or translate the failure into an error type the caller expects. Microsoft’s guidance is to avoid catching an exception unless the application can be left in a known state. Python likewise warns that broad handling can mask programming errors.

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  • Handle expected, actionable failures. A missing optional configuration file may have a safe default; a corrupt required file may require stopping the operation.
  • Keep handlers specific. Catch the relevant exception type when the language supports it, and avoid an indiscriminate catch-all that also swallows defects.
  • Do not continue with invalid state. If the handler cannot establish what remains safe, propagate the failure rather than silently continuing.
  • Preserve useful context. When reporting or translating an error, retain the original cause where the language permits it.

Java’s exceptions tutorial also distinguishes checked exceptions, which a method must catch or declare, from unchecked exceptions. That distinction affects how obligations are expressed, not whether a handler should conceal a failure.

How propagation and unhandled failures work

If code raises an exception and no matching handler exists locally, execution does not simply carry on as though the operation succeeded. The runtime or language’s exception mechanism gives enclosing callers an opportunity to handle the failure. In C#, the runtime unwinds the stack while searching for a matching handler; Python documents unmatched exceptions passing to outer try statements.

If no suitable handler is found, the exception is unhandled. The program or operation may terminate, and the runtime typically reports the failure. This is different from successful recovery: a handler in some distant caller is useful only if it can respond safely and with enough context.

Cleanup is not the same as recovery

Cleanup releases or restores resources when control leaves a block, whether execution leaves normally or because a failure occurred. It does not make the operation succeed, decide whether to retry, or make unsafe state valid. C# and Python describe finally clauses for cleanup; JavaScript’s guidance gives ensuring a file is not left open as an example.

Use the target language’s current resource-management idiom when one is available. Python’s with is shown above; other languages may provide scoped resource constructs. Where explicit cleanup is needed, put it in the appropriate guaranteed-exit mechanism and keep the handler’s recovery decision separate.

Exceptions and explicit error values across languages

Error handling is broader than try/catch. Languages differ in how ordinary failures are represented, selected, propagated, and cleaned up. These are broad distinctions, not interchangeable syntax rules.

Language Ordinary pattern established by the cited guide Handler or propagation approach
C# Thrown exceptions catch clauses can match failures as the runtime searches outward through the call stack; finally supports cleanup.
Java Exceptions, including checked and unchecked categories Methods handle exceptions or declare checked exceptions; consult the language’s current reference for details.
Python Exceptions except handles matching exceptions; unmatched ones can reach outer try statements. finally supports cleanup.
JavaScript Exceptions catch handles a thrown exception; cleanup may be arranged with finally.
Go Ordinary errors are commonly returned as values alongside results Callers inspect returned errors. Go’s FAQ explains the project view: “We believe that coupling exceptions to a control structure, as in the try-catch-finally idiom, results in convoluted code.” Go also has panic and recover, but these are not the ordinary returned-error pattern.
Rust Recoverable errors are represented explicitly, commonly with Result-style handling The Rust book distinguishes recoverable errors from failures that call for stopping execution; it does not treat every error as a conventional thrown exception.

For Go, returning an error makes the caller’s decision visible in ordinary control flow. Rust similarly makes recoverable failure part of the result being handled. Those designs differ from stack-unwinding exceptions, but still require deciding what to do when an operation fails.

Applying error handling to a ScreenshotNeo request

A screenshot request illustrates why handling should be specific: a service response may say whether a page was captured, rejected as a bot check, blank, failed, or served from cache, and whether it was billed. A client can inspect those response headers and make an explicit decision rather than treating every response body as a successful screenshot. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers: ScreenshotNeo.

Or skip the browser setup

For a screenshot without managing a browser, make one GET request. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.

Troubleshooting exception-handling mistakes

  • The program still stops after a failure: the exception may not match the handler, or the handler may be outside the active call path. Check the exception type and the stack trace; add handling only at a layer with a safe response.
  • The program continues but produces wrong results: a broad handler may have hidden the original failure, or code may have continued with incomplete state. Narrow the handler and define an explicit fallback or stop the operation.
  • A resource remains open: cleanup may not cover every exit path. Use the language’s scoped resource construct or guaranteed cleanup mechanism.
  • An error is swallowed during logging or translation: preserve the original cause and enough context to diagnose it; do not replace a useful failure with a vague success-like result.
  • A retry repeats the same failure: retries need a defined condition and limit. Do not retry failures that cannot plausibly change or continue indefinitely.

Syntax and detailed guarantees can vary by language version and API. Check the official documentation for the specific construct you use, especially when resource lifetime or asynchronous execution is involved.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does every programming language use exceptions?

No. Go and Rust commonly make recoverable errors explicit as returned values; exception mechanisms are not universal.

Why does Go not have exceptions?

The Go FAQ says the project believes coupling exceptions to a try-catch-finally control structure results in convoluted code. Go’s ordinary approach is to return errors for callers to inspect.
