Use cy.get() with a stable selector—preferably a dedicated attribute such as data-cy—to find an element in Cypress. Use cy.contains() when the visible text is part of what the test should verify, and use .find() to search descendants of an element you have already selected. Cypress retries these queries while waiting for the page to reach the expected state.
Choose the locator that matches what the test should protect
A good locator makes the test fail for the right reason. Ask whether the test should still pass if the element’s styling or label changes, whether its visible copy is itself under test, and whether the lookup should be limited to a particular region.
| Locator style | Use it when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
cy.get('[data-cy="..."]') |
You need stable element identity across styling or text changes. | Requires adding and maintaining test attributes in the markup. |
cy.contains(...) |
Visible text is part of the user-facing behavior being checked. | Copy changes, localization, and Cypress’s preferred-element behavior affect matching. |
| CSS structure or semantic attributes | The structure or attribute is meaningful to the test and reasonably stable. | Styling classes and broad tags can be fragile or ambiguous; choose a selector that identifies the target. |
Testing Library queries such as findByRole |
You want role- or label-oriented queries in a Cypress test. | Requires the Cypress Testing Library package. A locator alone is not a full accessibility audit. |
Cypress’s best-practices guide recommends using data-* attributes to isolate selectors from CSS or JavaScript changes: Cypress selector best practices. No locator choice by itself establishes that an application is accessible.
Use cy.get() for a stable selector
cy.get(selector) queries from Cypress’s current root, which is normally the application document unless the command is scoped inside .within(). Outside that scope, it does not search inside iframes. Cypress retries the query until it finds a match and any chained assertions pass, subject to the applicable timeout.

// In the application markup: <button data-cy="submit">Submit</button>
cy.get('[data-cy="submit"]').click()
Choose a test-specific attribute such as data-cy or another dedicated data-* attribute. Avoid depending on a styling class if it may change during a redesign, and avoid broad selectors such as *, div, or section when a precise selector is available. Broad selectors can match many nodes and create unnecessary work for Cypress and the browser.
Use cy.contains() when the text matters
cy.contains(text) is appropriate when the test should break if the visible wording changes—for example, when verifying or using a user-facing button label. It accepts a string, number, or regular expression and is case-sensitive by default. Set { matchCase: false } to match without regard to case.
cy.contains('Submit').click()
cy.contains('button', 'Submit').click()
cy.contains('button', 'submit', { matchCase: false }).click()
By default, cy.contains() yields at most one element. Cypress may prefer an interactive element, such as a button or link, over a deeper nested text match. Passing a selector limits candidate elements to those matching it. Because it returns no more than one result, do not use it to assert the length of a collection.

// Constrain the text query to a button rather than any element
cy.contains('button', 'Save').should('be.visible')
Text locators also couple a test to copy and language. If a label is localized, decide whether the test should follow that localized text or identify the element with a stable test attribute instead.

Use .find() and .within() to scope queries
.find(selector) searches descendants of the current subject; it does not include the subject itself. Use it for one local query. Use .within() when several Cypress commands should share the same selected region.
// One descendant query
cy.get('[data-cy="checkout"]').find('[data-cy="confirm"]').click()
// Several queries scoped to a form
cy.get('[data-cy="login-form"]').within(() => {
cy.get('[data-cy="email"]').type('reader@example.com')
cy.get('[data-cy="submit"]').click()
})
To match only direct children with .find(), use a leading child combinator:

cy.get('[data-cy="menu"]').find('> li')
Cypress commands are queued and retried; they do not synchronously return DOM elements like ordinary jQuery calls. Treat a Cypress chain as a test command sequence, not as an immediate DOM result.
Handle shadow DOM and iframe boundaries
Shadow DOM
By default, .find() does not cross a shadow boundary. You can include shadow DOM in a query with includeShadowDom: true, either for that query or through configuration, or explicitly enter a shadow root with .shadow() before querying within it.
cy.get('custom-panel').find('[data-cy="action"]', { includeShadowDom: true })
cy.get('custom-panel').shadow().find('[data-cy="action"]')
Iframes
cy.get() does not descend into an <iframe>; it searches the application-under-test document. An element inside an iframe is outside the reach of an ordinary document query, so a selector that appears correct in the outer document will not find it. See Cypress’s command documentation for cy.get() and .find() for the documented query boundaries and options.

Understand retries and fix locator timeouts
Cypress retries cy.get() and .find() while waiting for the element and chained assertions to pass. The default command timeout, or a timeout set for an individual command, limits that wait. When a query times out, check the selector and test state before increasing the wait.
- Check the rendered markup. Confirm the selector matches the actual element and attribute value at the time the command runs.
- Check the query scope. Verify the command starts at the expected root or parent; a query inside
.within()is scoped to that selected region. - Check application state. Ensure the page has reached the state in which the element is rendered before querying it.
- Check DOM boundaries. Ordinary queries do not cross iframe boundaries, and shadow-root traversal requires explicit handling.
- Adjust timeout only if needed. Increase it when the application genuinely needs more time, not to conceal an incorrect selector or scope.
Prefer a specific selector to *, div, or section. Cypress notes that broad selectors can require unnecessary query-engine and element-processing work: Cypress test performance guidance.
Example: combine stable identity, visible text, and scope
Use a data attribute to identify a form and its fields when identity should survive copy or styling changes; use text when the wording is part of the behavior under test.
