Use CSS Grid when you need direct control of both rows and columns. Use Bootstrap’s grid when its container, row, column, and responsive-class conventions fit your project. They are not mutually exclusive: choose which system should own each part of the layout.
What’s the difference?
CSS Grid is a native CSS layout system for arranging items in two dimensions. You define tracks, gaps, sizing, and placement in CSS; Grid can also create implicit tracks when content requires them. That makes it useful when rows and columns need to be designed together. See MDN’s guides to CSS grid layout and Grid’s basic concepts.
Bootstrap 5’s grid is a framework layout system built with flexbox. Its documented model uses containers, rows, and columns, with a twelve-column system and six default responsive tiers. Breakpoint classes apply at their minimum width and above. Bootstrap’s documentation also describes a mobile-first approach: baseline styles apply at the smallest viewport, with media queries layering changes at larger widths. See the Bootstrap v5.0 grid system and Bootstrap v5.0 layout and breakpoints.
CSS Grid vs. Bootstrap at a glance
| Consideration | CSS Grid | Bootstrap 5 grid |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Native CSS layout system | Framework-provided layout system built with flexbox |
| Layout model | Define row and column tracks, gaps, sizing, and placement | Compose containers, rows, and columns using a twelve-column system |
| Responsive workflow | Write CSS rules for the behavior the design needs | Use predefined breakpoint classes; the documented Bootstrap 5 grid has six default tiers, and classes apply from their minimum width upward |
| Best fit | Layouts whose row and column relationships need explicit control | Projects already using Bootstrap or designs that suit its container and column conventions |
The Bootstrap details in this comparison are from the v5.0 documentation; class names, defaults, and breakpoints can differ in other versions. Check the documentation for the version installed in your project.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
When should you use CSS Grid?
- The layout is genuinely two-dimensional. Use Grid when the placement of items across rows and columns needs to be coordinated, rather than treating each row as a separate horizontal group.
- You want named areas or explicit tracks. Grid lets you define tracks and place items within them, so layout relationships can be expressed in CSS instead of encoded through framework classes.
- You need custom sizing behavior. Grid lets you define how tracks are sized and how gaps are handled for the design at hand.
- You want layout rules in your own CSS. Grid avoids making Bootstrap’s grid classes the mechanism for those layout decisions.
When should you use Bootstrap’s grid?
- Your project already uses Bootstrap. Its grid conventions may be the straightforward choice when the rest of the project is built around the framework.
- The design fits containers and columns. Bootstrap’s twelve-column model is useful when that familiar structure maps naturally to the layout.
- You prefer its responsive class workflow. Bootstrap supplies default responsive tiers and classes that apply from a minimum breakpoint upward. Its breakpoints can be customized, as described in the Bootstrap v5.0 layout documentation.
Bootstrap’s documented rows and columns also manage gutters through padding on columns and negative margins on rows. That framework behavior is part of its layout model, not a property of native CSS Grid.
Is Bootstrap Grid the same as CSS Grid?
No. The names are similar, but the layout mechanisms differ: CSS Grid is a native two-dimensional CSS system, while Bootstrap 5’s grid is built with flexbox and framework conventions. Both can help create responsive layouts, but their APIs and ways of expressing layout are not interchangeable.

Can you use CSS Grid with Bootstrap?
Yes. A project can use both, but there is no universal integration pattern established by the cited documentation. Decide which system owns each layout or component, then check the project’s actual CSS cascade and responsive behavior. Clear ownership helps avoid competing rules when framework classes and custom CSS affect the same elements.
How to make the choice
- Start with the layout geometry. If you need coordinated control of rows and columns, begin with CSS Grid. If containers and columns describe the design well, Bootstrap’s grid may fit.
- Account for the project’s conventions. An existing Bootstrap codebase is a practical reason to use its grid; a project that does not need Bootstrap’s conventions can keep layout decisions in CSS.
- Choose the responsive workflow. Decide whether you want to write the CSS behavior for the design or work with Bootstrap’s predefined tiers and classes.
- Assign ownership if combining them. Specify which system controls each layout, then verify the cascade and behavior at the viewport sizes your project supports.
This is a feature-based choice, not a speed contest. The cited documentation describes how the systems work; it does not establish a universal performance or quality winner.

If you need screenshots of the pages you build to review or share a layout, ScreenshotNeo is an alternative to try first: it provides a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. A single GET request can return an image or PDF. For example, this cURL request captures a page as WebP:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and response details. Cookie banners are accepted and removed before capture, along with supported newsletter popups and chat widgets; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers indicate the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server gives AI agents tools to take screenshots, get page information, and capture PDFs. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.
