To find bugs on a website, reproduce a specific problem, inspect the browser’s Console and Network panels for clues, and use Lighthouse or accessibility checks to find issues that are less obvious. Treat tool output as evidence to investigate—not a diagnosis—and record the steps and conditions so someone else can reproduce the problem.

Start with a specific page and task

Choose the page and action connected to the suspected problem: submitting a form, opening a menu, following a link, or loading a particular image. State what you expected to happen and what actually happened. A reproducible symptom is more useful than a general impression that “the site is broken.”

  1. Open the relevant page and note its URL.
  2. Repeat the action that seems to trigger the problem.
  3. Record the expected result, actual result, and whether the issue happened every time.
  4. If it is intermittent, repeat the same steps and note relevant conditions, such as the browser, device, sign-in state, or network.

Inspect errors and requests in Chrome DevTools

Chrome DevTools can help narrow down what happened while the page loaded or while you used it. Open DevTools from Chrome’s menu or with Ctrl+Shift+J on Windows/Linux or Command+Option+J on macOS to open the Console. Use the Network panel to record requests and inspect their status, headers, responses, and timing. Chrome’s Network panel overview and network activity guide explain the available controls.

Look for relevant Console messages

Check for errors that coincide with the failed action, such as a script exception. An error is a clue, not proof of the cause: it may be unrelated, or the visible failure may originate elsewhere. Record the message and the action that preceded it rather than assuming the first error explains everything.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Find the failed or slow request

In Network, reproduce the issue and look for requests with failed statuses, unexpected responses, or unusually long timing. Select a relevant request to inspect its headers and response. A failed request can point toward a missing resource or server response, but you still need to connect it to the observed symptom.

For a loading problem, test with the cache disabled or simulate a slower connection using the Network panel’s controls. This can make timing-dependent failures or resources that load too late easier to notice. Change one condition at a time so you can tell which condition affects the result.

Use Lighthouse to establish a baseline

Run Lighthouse from Chrome DevTools to get an audit covering performance, accessibility, best practices, and SEO. Its findings are useful leads, not a guarantee that all functional defects have been found. Chrome’s Lighthouse guide recommends starting with a baseline, making one change at a time, and auditing again to see how the result changes.

A score or warning does not automatically establish a user-facing bug. Follow up on each finding by checking whether it affects the page or task you are evaluating.

Check accessibility with automation and human review

Automated accessibility checks can efficiently flag potential issues, but they cannot assess every aspect of accessibility. W3C states that no tool alone can determine whether a site meets accessibility standards. Use automation as one part of evaluation, then check how the page works for people.

  • Try navigating the task with a keyboard, without a mouse, and check whether focus is visible and moves in a sensible order.
  • Check whether controls have understandable names and whether errors or status changes are communicated clearly.
  • Assess the actual task and user experience; a clean automated scan is not proof that the page is accessible.

W3C’s accessibility evaluation overview covers early and ongoing evaluation. When choosing a tool, consider its purpose, coverage, supported standards, audience skill, reporting, and cost; W3C’s tool-selection guidance notes that teams may combine tools.

When to automate accessibility checks

If you already maintain browser tests and need repeatable checks, Playwright documents integrating axe scans into tests in its accessibility testing guide. This adds a repeatable automated signal to a test suite; it does not replace manual evaluation.

For broader evaluation needs, the W3C evaluation tools list describes options, including BrowserStack Web Accessibility Testing for testing across pages, including behind logins, and screen-reader testing. Treat tool descriptions as product information to verify for your needs, not as a required purchase or an endorsement.

Capture a screenshot to document what you saw

A screenshot can make a visual defect easier to understand, especially when paired with the page URL and reproduction steps. It records the visible state, but does not show the underlying request failure or explain why the page behaved that way; include relevant Console or Network details when they are safe to share.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. You can request a screenshot or PDF of a page, and its response identifies whether the capture was clean, a bot check, blank, failed, or a cache hit. It is useful for documenting the rendered page, while DevTools remains the place to inspect browser errors and requests.

Turn the finding into a useful bug report

There is no universal report format established by the sources cited here, but including the following details gives a developer a practical starting point:

  • The page URL and the specific task or control involved.
  • Browser and device, plus relevant state such as whether you were signed in.
  • Exact steps to reproduce the problem.
  • Expected behavior and actual behavior.
  • How often it occurred and any conditions that changed the result.
  • A screenshot, if it helps, and relevant Console or Network clues that are safe to share.

Keep security testing authorized

Checking whether visible pages or controls work is different from probing a web application for security weaknesses. Do not test systems you do not own or lack permission to assess. For authorized security work, OWASP’s Web Security Testing Guide is a specialized reference.

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response says which page verdict occurred. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
