To debug a website open in Firefox for Android, connect the phone to desktop Firefox through about:debugging, then open the page’s remote developer tools. You need Android USB debugging, Firefox’s separate Remote Debugging via USB setting, and adb on the computer. A wireless option is available for Android 11 or later.
What you need before connecting
- A computer with desktop Firefox and
adbinstalled. Mozilla says the full Android Studio SDK is not required; onlyadbis needed. Mozilla’s about:debugging documentation - An Android phone with Developer options and USB debugging enabled for the wired setup.
- Firefox for Android with Remote Debugging via USB enabled for the wired setup.
- For USB, a cable that supports data as well as charging. Its connector depends on the phone and computer.
Mozilla states that Firefox for Android is compatible with Android 8.0 or later; that is a browser compatibility requirement, not a stated minimum Android version for USB remote debugging. Mozilla’s compatibility information
Connect Firefox for Android over USB
- Open remote debugging on the computer. In desktop Firefox, enter
about:debuggingin the address bar. Mozilla also lists Tools > Browser Tools > Remote Debugging as an entry point. - Enable Android Developer options. In the phone’s Settings, open About phone and tap Build Number seven times. The exact settings labels can vary by Android device.
- Turn on Android USB debugging. Find USB debugging in the phone’s Developer options and enable it.
- Enable Firefox’s remote debugging setting. In Firefox for Android, open Settings > Advanced Settings and turn on Remote Debugging via USB. Android USB debugging and Firefox’s setting are separate requirements.
- Connect the phone. Use a data-capable USB cable. If the phone asks whether to authorize debugging from this computer, accept the prompt.
- Refresh the device list if necessary. In
about:debugging, use Refresh devices. Check thatadbis installed and available if the phone is missing. - Connect to the browser target. Open the page you want to inspect in Firefox for Android. In
about:debugging, find the phone and click Connect next to its device name. Use the remote developer tools that open to inspect and debug that page.

Choose USB or wireless debugging

Mozilla documents wireless debugging using Android’s Wireless debugging feature. Enable Developer options and Wireless debugging on the phone, note its local IP address, then follow the pairing and connection flow shown by Android and Firefox. Both paths use adb. Mozilla does not establish that one method is universally faster or more reliable; choose based on Android version, cable availability, network access, and whether you can complete the authorization or pairing prompt.
Troubleshoot a missing device or failed connection
The phone does not appear in about:debugging
- Click Refresh devices.
- Confirm Android’s Developer options and USB debugging are enabled.
- For USB, confirm Firefox for Android’s Remote Debugging via USB setting is enabled.
- Check that
adbis installed on the computer and that the cable supports data. - Look at the phone for a computer-authorization prompt. Accept it, then refresh the device list.
The phone is connected but not authorized
Follow Mozilla’s documented recovery guidance: disable the active debugging settings, repeat setup, accept the computer-authorization prompt on the phone, and refresh devices. The USB Devices control turns itself off
First verify the current documented prerequisites: USB device support in about:debugging, Android USB debugging, Firefox’s remote-debugging setting, adb, and phone authorization. A Mozilla Support thread describes a 2022 case in which changing devtools.remote.adb.extensionURL was suggested for a particular extension-path problem. That is a historical user-reported workaround, not current general setup guidance; do not change the preference unless your present issue matches that report. Historical Mozilla Support thread
Wireless pairing does not work
- Confirm the phone runs Android 11 or later and that Wireless debugging is enabled.
- Make sure the phone and the computer running
about:debuggingare on the same network. - Follow the pairing and connection prompts on the phone and in Firefox, using the phone’s local IP address as directed.
- If wireless setup is unavailable, use the documented USB route instead.
