Prevent cross-browser compatibility issues by choosing target browsers from your actual audience, checking support for the specific features your site needs, keeping core content and tasks usable without newer enhancements, and testing throughout development. Compatibility does not require identical appearance everywhere; it requires an accessible, working experience across the platforms you commit to support.

1. Set a support matrix that reflects your users

Start by deciding which browser, operating-system, device, and assistive-technology combinations the product will support. There is no universal list: the right targets depend on your audience, markets, product requirements, and the tasks visitors need to complete. MDN recommends prioritizing combinations important to the target audience because it is not practical to test every possible browser and device. MDN’s introduction to cross-browser testing uses Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge on desktop and mobile as examples, not as a definitive support matrix.

  • Review available audience and product data, and identify countries or markets the site serves.
  • List the browser families, operating systems, device classes, and version policy your team will support.
  • Identify essential tasks—such as navigation, account access, forms, or checkout—and decide how you will verify they remain usable.
  • Include keyboard and screen-reader access in the plan, not only visual rendering.

Write down the matrix and agree on it with stakeholders before implementation. Revisit it when audience patterns or product commitments change.

2. Check support for the features your design depends on

Make an inventory of important HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and web API features before committing to them. For each one, check compatibility information for the exact feature and the browsers in your matrix. If support is limited or newly available, decide whether to avoid it, supply a fallback, or use it only as an enhancement.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

MDN Baseline compatibility information summarizes support across named popular browsers, including Safari on iOS and macOS, Chrome on Android and desktop, Edge desktop, and Firefox on Android and desktop. It is a useful starting point, not proof that a feature works correctly on every older release, operating-system webview, assistive technology, or device. Compatibility records change, so verify the feature information when planning or revising a release.

3. Build a usable baseline, then enhance it

Make essential content and interactions work before relying on newer layout or behavior. Then add richer presentation or functionality when the browser supports the needed capability. This progressive-enhancement approach keeps the page useful when an enhancement is unavailable.

Use CSS feature queries for CSS enhancements

For example, give a list a simple layout first and add a grid layout where the browser recognizes it:

.cards {
  display: block;
}

@supports (display: grid) {
  .cards {
    display: grid;
    grid-template-columns: repeat(3, minmax(0, 1fr));
    gap: 1rem;
  }
}

CSS @supports feature queries check whether a browser recognizes a property/value declaration. Recognition does not guarantee a bug-free implementation or rule out partial behavior, so keep the fallback acceptable and test both paths in target browsers.

Use JavaScript feature detection for APIs

Check for the capability your code needs and provide an alternate path when it is absent. For example:

if ('geolocation' in navigator) {
  navigator.geolocation.getCurrentPosition(showPosition, showLocationError);
} else {
  showManualLocationOption();
}

The fallback should let users complete the relevant task where possible; merely hiding an unavailable control can leave a core workflow inaccessible. MDN’s guidance on implementing feature detection explains why capability checks are preferable to assumptions based on browser identity.

4. Test in short cycles, across real tasks

Do not wait until release to discover that a feature fails in a target browser. Test small changes as they are introduced, first in a few representative environments and then across the agreed matrix. MDN’s testing strategies recommend selecting important combinations based on the audience and using physical devices where practical, with emulators or virtual machines to fill coverage gaps.

  1. Smoke-test early changes: check the current work in a couple of stable desktop browsers and on a mobile platform.
  2. Exercise user tasks: navigate the site and complete its important flows, including relevant forms, account actions, or purchases.
  3. Check interaction and accessibility: use the keyboard to reach and operate controls, and use a screen reader to check navigation and task completion.
  4. Expand to the matrix: test the supported browser, operating-system, and device combinations, using real devices where practical and emulators or virtual machines for gaps.
  5. Investigate regressions: isolate the feature or behavior that differs, make a targeted fix, and retest affected combinations.

Judge success by whether core tasks and accessible interaction work as well as by visual appearance. A site does not need to render identically on every platform if its core functionality remains accessible.

5. Diagnose capability differences instead of guessing by browser name

A browser name does not reliably tell your code which capabilities are available. User-agent strings can be changed or spoofed, and browser-specific rules become maintenance work as support evolves. Avoid routine user-agent sniffing to decide whether a feature is supported; test for the capability or provide progressive enhancement instead. See MDN’s guidance on browser detection using the user-agent string.

If testing confirms a browser-specific bug or behavior difference, isolate the workaround, document the condition it addresses, and retest it as browser support changes. Do not let a temporary browser exception become a substitute for a standards-based fallback.

Or skip the browser setup:

For a website screenshot, ScreenshotNeo provides a one-request capture rather than a local browser setup. It is a screenshot API and MCP server for developers; it complements compatibility testing rather than replacing tests of your own site’s browser matrix, interactions, and accessibility.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for API options. It accepts consent banners as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Every feature is available on every plan.
