To debug JavaScript in a web page, start in the browser’s Developer Tools Console: find the first relevant error and its file-and-line link, then open that location in the source debugger, set a breakpoint, and inspect the values, scope, and call stack as the code runs. The Console is best for errors and quick checks; the debugger is best for finding where execution first goes wrong.

Start with the Console

Open your browser’s Developer Tools and select the Console. The exact menu path and panel layout vary by browser, so use the browser’s current menu or official help if you need a shortcut.

  1. Reproduce the problem, such as by reloading the page or repeating the action that triggers the behavior.
  2. Look for the first error that appears to relate to the problem. Read the message and note the linked script file and line number, when provided. Error wording and presentation vary by browser.
  3. Click the file-and-line reference to open the corresponding code in the debugger.

The Console can also evaluate JavaScript in the context of the loaded page. Use it to check a small expression or inspect current page state—for example, document.title to read the page title. Treat console expressions as diagnostic checks: they show the current state, but do not by themselves explain how the page reached it.

Pause execution with a breakpoint

Chrome calls its source debugger Sources; Firefox calls it Debugger. Panel names and layouts differ across browsers, but the basic workflow is the same: open the referenced script, choose a line near the suspected failure, and set a breakpoint. A breakpoint pauses execution when the code reaches that line.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. In the debugger, open the script identified by the Console error.
  2. Set a breakpoint on the failing statement or a nearby line that runs before it.
  3. Reload the page or repeat the action that triggers the code.
  4. When execution pauses, inspect the current values and compare them with what the code expects.
  5. Step through the next statements to identify where the actual behavior first diverges from the expected behavior.

Read the paused state

  • Variables and scope: Check the values available at the paused line, including local variables and values from surrounding scopes. A value that is missing, stale, or a different type than expected can reveal the source of the failure.
  • Call stack: Follow the functions that led to the paused line. This helps distinguish a faulty statement from an unexpected caller or execution path.
  • Stepping: Advance one statement at a time and watch which value changes immediately before the result goes wrong.

For example, if a click handler fails while reading a property from an object, pause before that read. Check whether the object exists and has the expected shape, then step forward to see whether the failing expression is reached with different data than anticipated.

Use debugger; when a line breakpoint is awkward

You can add a debugger; statement at the point where you want execution to pause:

When debugging functionality is available, the statement can pause execution like a breakpoint. MDN describes it this way: “The debugger statement invokes any available debugging functionality, such as setting a breakpoint.” MDN’s debugger reference notes that it has no effect when no debugging functionality is available. Remove the statement after diagnosing the issue, or leave it only when the pause is intentional.

Debug bundled or minified code with source maps

When the deployed script is bundled or minified, its lines and names may not resemble the source you wrote. A working source map lets DevTools connect debugging activity in the deployed file to the original source. Chrome documents this in its source maps guide.

If the original source does not appear, check that the deployed script points to a source map and that the map is available to the browser. Without an accessible map, you may need to inspect the deployed script instead; a source map cannot help if it is missing or unavailable.

When the Console is enough—and when to switch panels

Tool Use it for
Console Reading runtime errors, following a reported file-and-line reference, and evaluating small expressions against the loaded page.
Source debugger Pausing execution, stepping through statements, and inspecting values, scope, and the call stack.

Use the Console to find a starting point, then switch to the debugger when you need to understand the execution path or the values at the moment of failure. This pairing is more informative than repeatedly reloading and reading the same error.

Common debugging problems and fixes

  • No useful error appears: Reproduce the behavior while watching the Console, then set a breakpoint in the code that should run. A breakpoint can show whether execution reaches that code and what state it has at that point.
  • The error points to a minified file: Check whether a source map is linked and accessible. If DevTools cannot map to the original source, debug the deployed file or make the map available.
  • The breakpoint does not pause: Confirm it is set on executable code, then reload or repeat the action that reaches that code. If the code path is difficult to target with a line breakpoint, add debugger; at the desired point and try again.
  • A value looks correct in the Console but the bug remains: A console expression shows the page’s current state, not necessarily the state at the time of failure. Pause at the relevant statement and inspect the value there.
  • You cannot find the same panel name: Browser interfaces differ. Look for that browser’s source-debugging panel; Chrome uses Sources and Firefox uses Debugger.

If your task is to capture a page rather than diagnose its JavaScript, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API. It is separate from browser debugging and does not replace the Console or debugger when you need to inspect code.
