WebDriver controls the browser; pytest runs tests and evaluates assertions.
What “hybrid framework” means here
Selenium’s documentation does not prescribe a canonical hybrid framework. Teams use “hybrid” for different combinations, such as data-driven and keyword-driven testing or a behavior-driven layer paired with another pattern. This example keeps the definition narrow: pytest tests supply different data, while Page Objects encapsulate page-specific locators and operations.
The separation matters. Selenium describes WebDriver as communicating with the browser; a test framework is responsible for execution and assertions. A behavior layer such as Cucumber can sit within or wrap a test framework when Given/When/Then scenarios are a project need, but it is not required for this design. See Selenium’s test practices and framework guidance.
Choose the pieces and keep their responsibilities separate
WebDriver and browser session
WebDriver sends commands to a browser through the language binding. The browser session belongs in a fixture or other small lifecycle layer so tests do not each duplicate browser creation and cleanup.

Test runner and assertions
This example uses pytest for Python tests, fixtures, parameterization, and assertions. Selenium’s documented runner examples vary by language: pytest or unittest for Python, JUnit or TestNG for Java, NUnit or MSTest for .NET, and Jest or Mocha for JavaScript. Choose for language compatibility, team familiarity, data/parameter support, parallel needs, plugins, and CI reporting.
Page Objects and test data
Page Objects collect page-specific locators and operations behind public methods. Tests express intent and own assertions; Page Objects generally should not make assertions or expose their internal locators. Selenium explains that this reduces duplication and localizes UI-change fixes in its Page Object Models guidance.
Example project layout
This is a useful convention, not a Selenium-mandated structure:
tests/: test intent, test data, and assertions.pages/: page or component objects and their operations.support/: configuration, driver fixture, and shared wait helpers.
Install Selenium and pytest
Use a virtual environment and pin versions deliberately for repeatable local and CI runs. Selenium’s installation page documents Python package installation and pinned dependencies; its Java version examples are examples, not a universal compatibility guarantee. Confirm the Python runtime, Selenium binding, browser, and CI environment together. See Selenium installation guidance.
python -m venv .venv
# macOS/Linux:
source .venv/bin/activate
# Windows PowerShell:
# .venvScriptsActivate.ps1
python -m pip install selenium pytest
python -m pip freeze > requirements.txt
For a project-managed dependency file, record the versions you have validated instead of treating the output of pip freeze as a universal version recommendation.

Build a small runnable framework
The following example uses the public demo site https://www.selenium.dev/selenium/web/web-form.html. It demonstrates a browser fixture, a Page Object, parameterized test data, and an explicit wait for the next step’s required condition.
1. Create the browser lifecycle fixture
Save as conftest.py in the project root:
import pytest
from selenium import webdriver
@pytest.fixture
def driver():
browser = webdriver.Chrome()
browser.set_window_size(1280, 900)
yield browser
browser.quit()
The fixture creates one isolated browser session per test and quits it even when the test fails. Selenium Manager is bundled with Selenium releases and can manage a driver when you do not supply one. See the Selenium Manager documentation for network requirements and platform caveats.
2. Put page operations in a Page Object
Create pages/web_form.py and pages/__init__.py (the latter may be empty):
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsfrom selenium.webdriver.common.by import By
from selenium.webdriver.support import expected_conditions as EC
from selenium.webdriver.support.ui import WebDriverWait
class WebFormPage:
URL = "https://www.selenium.dev/selenium/web/web-form.html"
def __init__(self, driver):
self.driver = driver
self.wait = WebDriverWait(driver, 10)
def open(self):
self.driver.get(self.URL)
self.wait.until(EC.visibility_of_element_located((By.NAME, "my-text")))
def submit_text(self, value):
field = self.wait.until(
EC.visibility_of_element_located((By.NAME, "my-text"))
)
field.clear()
field.send_keys(value)
self.driver.find_element(By.CSS_SELECTOR, "button").click()
def confirmation_text(self):
result = self.wait.until(
EC.visibility_of_element_located((By.ID, "message"))
)
return result.text
The page object exposes meaningful page services—open, submit, and read confirmation—rather than making the test reach into its locator details.
3. Parameterize tests and keep assertions in the test
Create tests/test_web_form.py and ensure the directories are importable if your environment requires it:

import pytest
from pages.web_form import WebFormPage
@pytest.mark.parametrize("value", ["hello", "Selenium test"])
def test_form_submission_shows_confirmation(driver, value):
page = WebFormPage(driver)
page.open()
page.submit_text(value)
assert page.confirmation_text() == "Received!"
Run it from the project root:
python -m pytest -q
Pytest reports each parameterized case as a test result. In a real suite, use stable test data and an application environment intended for automation; a public demo site can change or be unavailable.
Use waits for application state, not guessed timing
A navigation reaching a page-load state does not ensure that JavaScript has finished changing the interface or that the element needed next is ready. Selenium identifies races between the application and test commands as a primary source of flaky tests. Use explicit waits for the specific condition the next action needs, such as visibility, clickability, or a result appearing. See Selenium waiting strategies.
- Prefer
WebDriverWaitplus an expected condition over fixed sleeps. - Wait for a meaningful application condition, not merely that an element exists if it must also be visible or enabled.
- Avoid mixing implicit and explicit waits; Selenium warns the combined behavior can produce unpredictable wait times.
- Keep timeout values intentional and scoped to your application’s expected response, rather than masking slow or broken behavior with arbitrarily long waits.
Manage browser drivers and execution topology
Local execution
Start locally for a simpler feedback loop. Selenium Manager can discover, download, and cache drivers when the binding does not receive an explicitly managed driver. In restricted corporate networks, driver or browser version endpoints may be unreachable, so configure approved access or provide a driver through your organization’s existing process. Selenium documents platform support limitations, including Linux ARM/aarch64 caveats.
When Selenium Grid is useful
Use Grid when tests need remote browser sessions, parallel execution across machines, or wider browser and platform coverage than one developer workstation can provide. Grid introduces infrastructure and network ownership considerations: plan capacity, browser availability, endpoint access, and how CI jobs route sessions. Selenium’s Grid overview describes its distributed execution role.
For a basic standalone Grid, download the Selenium Server jar from the official project and start it with Java:

java -jar selenium-server-<version>.jar standalone
Then configure the binding to use the server endpoint. For example, replace the fixture’s driver creation with a remote session:
from selenium import webdriver
from selenium.webdriver.chrome.options import Options
options = Options()
browser = webdriver.Remote(
command_executor="http://localhost:4444",
options=options,
)
Use the endpoint and security configuration appropriate to your Grid deployment; do not expose an unauthenticated Grid endpoint to untrusted networks. Consult Grid getting started for setup details.
Grow the framework without turning it into a second application
- Add a configuration layer for browser choice, base URL, and timeouts when more than one environment or browser is genuinely needed.
- Use page or component objects for repeated UI behavior, not as generic containers for assertions or test control flow.
- Introduce data files or factories when test cases need maintainable data variation; keep the assertion and scenario intent visible in the test.
- Add a behavior layer only if readable business scenarios or collaboration needs justify the added dependency and maintenance.
- Keep setup, session cleanup, and shared wait conventions small. There is no official Selenium-required folder layout.
Troubleshooting common failures
Driver or browser cannot be found
Check that the browser is installed and supported, the machine can reach any required driver/version endpoints, and the runtime platform is supported by Selenium Manager. In managed environments, use the approved driver provisioning path rather than repeatedly retrying blocked downloads.
Element is not found or is not interactable
Confirm the locator against the current page, wait for the right state, and check whether the element is inside a frame or shadow root that requires separate handling. A locator that worked against an earlier UI may no longer match; update it in the Page Object rather than duplicating a patch in each test.
Tests fail intermittently
Look for timing races, shared mutable test state, or tests depending on execution order. Replace sleeps with condition-based waits, create fresh browser state per test where appropriate, and avoid making one test depend on another’s setup.
Best Value

Remote session cannot connect
Verify the Grid server is running, the configured endpoint is reachable from the test runner, and the requested browser capability is available. Check CI network routing and Grid capacity before treating the test itself as the cause.
Suite is too slow
Measure whether time is spent starting sessions, loading the application, or waiting on conditions. Remove redundant navigation and unnecessary waits; then consider Grid parallelism if the test suite and application can safely support concurrent sessions. Parallel execution adds infrastructure and can expose shared-data collisions, so isolate test data first.
Or skip the browser setup
If your task is to capture a page image or PDF rather than interactively test its behavior, ScreenshotNeo provides a screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. For example, using the target URL from this guide:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://www.selenium.dev/selenium/web/web-form.html -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options and response details. Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are not billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. These captures do not replace Selenium tests that need browser interaction, assertions, or workflow validation. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card required.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Selenium provide a built-in test runner?
No. WebDriver controls the browser; a separate runner such as pytest, JUnit, or NUnit executes tests and handles assertions.
Is Page Object Model required for a Selenium framework?
No. Selenium documents it as a practice that can reduce duplicated UI code and centralize page operations, not as a required architecture.
When should I add Selenium Grid?
Add it when remote sessions, distributed execution, or broader browser and platform coverage justify the infrastructure and operational work.
