HTML is still evolving, but “HTML5” is no longer a precise name for a new, numbered release. The maintained reference is the WHATWG HTML Living Standard; developers should follow that standard and evaluate browser-platform features against the browsers their users actually run. The trends to watch are shared compatibility guidance, continued cross-browser work, and newer native tools for positioning, transitions, and navigation.

HTML5 is shorthand, not a frozen release

WHATWG describes “HTML5” as a widely used buzzword for modern web technologies, many—but not all—developed at WHATWG. HTML has no current version number; it is maintained as a Living Standard. WHATWG’s introduction explains that after the W3C and WHATWG pursued different approaches—one centered on a finished numbered standard and the other on continuous maintenance—they agreed in 2019 to collaborate on a single version going forward. WHATWG’s introduction to HTML and MDN’s HTML5 glossary provide context.

The standard covers semantic markup and semantic-level scripting APIs for accessible pages, from static documents to dynamic applications. It does not define the entire browser platform or every presentation system. CSS positioning and browser navigation APIs therefore belong in a discussion of what developers often call “HTML5 trends,” but they are not all HTML features. Use semantic document structure as the durable foundation, then choose additional platform capabilities to solve specific interaction needs.

Use Baseline as a compatibility filter, then test your audience

Baseline gives teams a shared vocabulary for communicating support across a core browser set: Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari. The W3C WebDX Community Group’s catalog maps detailed compatibility data into higher-level web features. Its snapshot at the end of February 2025 reported 1,006 features in the catalog, 328 implemented somewhere in the core browser set, 150 Baseline Newly Available features, and 528 Baseline Widely Available features. These dated counts describe that catalog and those four browsers, not all browser features or a live 2026 total. The WebDX catalog documentation explains its scope.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Newly Available indicates that a feature has shipped in all browsers in the core set, with the category meaningful only for versions released after July 2015. Widely Available applies after January 2018. Neither label guarantees suitability for every audience: your project may need to support older browser versions, embedded webviews, or devices outside the core set.

A practical support check

  1. Look up the feature’s Baseline status and detailed browser compatibility information to screen out capabilities that clearly miss your support needs.
  2. Check the exact browser versions and devices in your product’s support policy; do not treat a Baseline label as a substitute for that check.
  3. Decide what should happen when the feature is missing. Use progressive enhancement or a fallback when the interaction is important to core tasks or accessibility.
  4. Test the actual experience in representative target browsers, including keyboard and assistive-technology paths where relevant.

Cross-browser interoperability remains active work

Interop 2025 coordinated work across 19 focus areas and five investigation areas spanning CSS, JavaScript, Web APIs, and performance. In its February 2026 review, WebKit reported the selected-test pass rate rising from 29% at the start of 2025 to 97% at year’s end; experimental browsers reached 99%, and Safari’s score rose from 43 to 99. These are results on Interop’s chosen tests, not an overall compatibility score for the web or a promise that every feature is broadly available. WebKit’s Interop 2025 review describes the program and its results.

The review’s CSS and UI work included anchor positioning, View Transitions, @scope, backdrop-filter, text decoration, writing modes, layout, and <details>. API and platform focus areas included the Navigation API, Storage Access API, URLPattern, modules, scrollend, WebRTC, and WebAssembly. Compatibility and health work included Core Web Vitals, pointer and mouse events, removing Mutation events, and general compatibility. Accessibility testing, Gamepad API testing, mobile testing, privacy testing, and WebVTT were investigation areas. This range is a sign of continued convergence work, not a release checklist for production adoption.

CSS anchor positioning can relate popovers to their anchors

Anchor positioning lets CSS place elements such as tooltips, menus, and popovers in relation to another element. In WebKit’s review, author Nicole Sullivan says it can do this “purely in CSS — no JavaScript positioning libraries required,” and the review says the feature now works interoperably across all browsers. Treat that as an attributed statement in the February 2026 review, and check current compatibility details and constraints before relying on it in a specific project.

When considering anchor positioning over a JavaScript positioning library, check support in target browsers, whether the resulting interaction meets accessibility requirements, how unsupported browsers will behave, and the maintenance and performance trade-offs. A native option may simplify implementation when it fits the use case, but no one approach is best for every project.

View Transitions and the Navigation API address different kinds of change

Same-document View Transitions

Same-document View Transitions provide animated changes between UI states. WebKit’s Interop 2025 review mentions view-transition-class and says WebKit shipped support in Safari 18.0 and 18.2 in fall 2024. The review frames the feature as ready for use in light of interoperability attention; confirm current compatibility and provide a usable experience when animation is unavailable or undesirable.

Navigation API

The Navigation API offers interception, traversal, and entry information for single-page application navigation. WebKit describes it as a modern replacement for history.pushState() and says support shipped in Safari 26.2. Those version-specific details are claims in the February 2026 review; check current browser compatibility data and your target versions before adopting it.

These capabilities solve different problems: View Transitions animate changes in presentation, while the Navigation API concerns navigation behavior and history. Compare either with an existing library or workaround by support, accessibility, fallback behavior, complexity, and the experience it creates—not simply by whether it is newer.

Capture pages for development with ScreenshotNeo

If a project needs repeatable website captures—for visual checks, documentation, or other development workflows—ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. ScreenshotNeo is separate from HTML standards and browser support; it is a capture option, not a compatibility-testing substitute.

Or skip the browser setup

Use this cURL request to save a screenshot of a page:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request parameters and response details. It accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed; response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots; all features are on every plan. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo to try the free plan.
