1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteSet Selenium’s implicit wait through the driver’s timeout settings: driver.Manage().Timeouts().ImplicitWait = TimeSpan.FromSeconds(2);. It makes element-location calls wait up to that duration for a matching element to appear. The setting applies across the WebDriver session; it does not wait for an element to become visible or clickable.
Set an implicit wait in C#
Use the ImplicitWait property on the driver’s timeout settings. Its value is a TimeSpan. The example below follows Selenium’s official dynamic-element example: it clicks a button that adds an element, then looks up that element.
using System;
using OpenQA.Selenium;
using OpenQA.Selenium.Chrome;
IWebDriver driver = new ChromeDriver();
try
{
driver.Manage().Timeouts().ImplicitWait = TimeSpan.FromSeconds(2);
driver.Navigate().GoToUrl("https://www.selenium.dev/selenium/web/dynamic.html");
driver.FindElement(By.Id("adder")).Click();
IWebElement added = driver.FindElement(By.Id("box0"));
// Continue with the element after FindElement returns.
}
finally
{
driver.Quit();
}
The snippet assumes the Selenium .NET WebDriver package is installed and that Chrome and a compatible ChromeDriver setup are available to the test environment. The two-second value is illustrative, not a universal recommendation. See Selenium’s waiting strategies and its C# getting-started example.
What implicit wait does—and does not do
Selenium’s documented default implicit wait is zero. With that default, a lookup that finds no matching element fails immediately. After you set a nonzero duration, Selenium retries an element lookup until it finds a match or the timeout expires.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- For
FindElement: if no match appears before the timeout, the call throwsNoSuchElementException. - For
FindElements: Selenium waits until it finds at least one match or the timeout expires. If none appears, the lookup returns an empty collection. - After a match is found: the lookup returns the element reference. The implicit wait does not then wait for visibility, enabled state, clickability, or another application-specific condition.
This is a session-wide setting for element-location calls, not a timeout attached to one locator. The .NET API documents the property and its behavior in the ITimeouts reference.
Choose implicit or explicit wait
Use an implicit wait as a broad allowance for element lookups that may be briefly delayed. Use an explicit wait when a particular condition must become true—for example, when an element needs to become visible. Selenium’s C# WebDriverWait API supports condition-based waiting.

| Wait type | Scope | What it waits for | When it fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Implicit | Element-location calls throughout the driver session | A matching element to be found | Lookups may need a brief, general allowance |
| Explicit | A particular wait in the test | A specified condition, such as visibility | The test needs a particular state or condition before continuing |
Do not combine implicit and explicit waits. Selenium warns that their interaction can produce unpredictable total durations: its documentation gives the example that a 10-second implicit wait and a 15-second explicit wait could result in a timeout after 20 seconds. Choose one approach for a test flow rather than layering the two.
Set the duration without slowing tests unnecessarily
A configured duration is an upper bound for an unsuccessful lookup, not a pause that Selenium always consumes. If the element appears earlier, the lookup returns earlier. But missing-element lookups can take longer as the implicit timeout increases; slower locator strategies such as XPath can add to test runtime. Selenium’s .NET API advises increasing the setting judiciously.

Keep the value only as large as the general lookup delay your tests need. If a particular step needs a condition beyond element presence, use an explicit wait for that condition instead of raising the session-wide timeout to cover it.
Troubleshoot implicit-wait problems
- A missing element fails immediately: confirm that the timeout assignment runs before the lookup and that the value is greater than zero. The documented default is zero.
- The lookup waits, then throws
NoSuchElementException: the element was not found before the timeout expired. Check the locator and whether the page action that should create the element actually ran. A longer timeout helps only if the element is expected to appear after a delay. - The element is found but cannot be clicked: implicit wait only waits for a matching element to be located. It does not establish visibility, enabled state, or clickability; wait for the required condition explicitly.
- Test timeouts feel longer than configured: review whether implicit and explicit waits are both in use. Selenium warns that combining them can make total wait durations unpredictable.
- Many tests become slower: unsuccessful lookups can consume more time under a larger implicit timeout, particularly with slower locator strategies. Reduce the global value or use a targeted condition-based wait where appropriate.
