Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Test the browsers and devices your users rely on, automate a small set of important journeys across Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit, then manually check platform-sensitive behavior on the real environments that matter. This approach gives you repeatable coverage without trying to test every possible browser–operating system–device combination.
1. Choose a browser and device matrix based on your users
Start with evidence about your audience and the risks in your product—not a universal browser list. Review any available usage analytics, support reports, contractual requirements, and the features your site depends on. Decide which browser families, operating systems, device classes, and user journeys deserve regular coverage.
For a modern web app, a practical initial matrix is Playwright’s Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit projects. Add branded Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge projects when you specifically need to check those public browser builds, and select mobile profiles that reflect your audience. Playwright’s browser documentation describes its browser projects and how to configure branded browsers and device profiles. It does not establish one correct matrix for every product.
Separate browser engines from branded browsers
Playwright’s Chromium project is not necessarily identical to the stable Chrome or Edge build a customer has installed. Its default Chromium build can be ahead of public stable releases, which is useful for catching upcoming changes but is not a substitute for regression checks against a current public browser. Playwright supports branded stable channels for Chrome and Edge when that distinction matters.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Likewise, Playwright’s Firefox build is patched, and its WebKit build comes from WebKit sources rather than being branded Safari. For features that depend on operating-system integrations—video playback is one example—use the actual browser and platform when the distinction could affect users. The documentation notes that macOS WebKit is closer to Safari for some behaviors.
Keep the matrix small enough to maintain
- Run the core engine projects on every change if the runtime and CI budget allow.
- Add a branded browser or operating-system combination when audience evidence, a product requirement, or a known platform-sensitive feature justifies it.
- Use a scheduled broader matrix for lower-priority combinations rather than making every possible combination a merge blocker.
- Revisit the choices when your audience or product changes; don’t treat a starter matrix as a permanent compatibility guarantee.
2. Automate the journeys most likely to break
Choose a few high-value flows that are repeatable and meaningful for your site—for example, sign-in, navigation, search, checkout, or submitting a core form. Run those same journeys as separate Playwright projects so a pass in one browser does not stand in for a pass in another. Playwright runs configured projects by default and supports selecting a project for a targeted run.

Install and run the browser projects
In an existing Node.js project, install Playwright Test and its managed browsers:
npm init playwright@latest
npx playwright install
Playwright’s generated configuration normally includes Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit projects. Run the configured test suite with:

npx playwright test
To run just one configured project, use its project name from playwright.config.ts, for example:
npx playwright test --project=chromium
Use your own test paths and project names if they differ from the generated defaults. Add Chrome or Edge stable channels and selected mobile device profiles in the configuration when your matrix calls for them; consult the Playwright browser configuration guidance for the current options.

Make the runs useful in CI
- Keep each test focused on a user-visible outcome, and make setup and test data repeatable.
- Run the same critical flow in each chosen browser project so failures can be compared across engines.
- Use selective project runs to diagnose a failure, not to declare cross-browser compatibility based on one engine.
- Update Playwright and its browser builds regularly. The project recommends regular updates so teams can use new features and catch browser changes early.
- If you need regression against current public Chrome or Edge, configure the branded stable channel rather than assuming Playwright’s default Chromium matches it.
3. Add targeted checks on real browsers and devices
Playwright can emulate user agent, screen size, viewport, touch, locale, timezone, geolocation, permissions, and color scheme. Those controls are valuable for responsive layout and simulated device conditions, but an emulated profile does not prove that every physical phone or tablet behaves identically. See Playwright’s emulation documentation for the settings it can simulate.
Use manual or remote checks selectively for the cases where the real browser, operating system, or hardware can change the outcome: media playback, touch interactions, permissions, system UI, or a high-impact flow on a platform used by your customers. Do not multiply the matrix without a reason; use the risk and audience evidence from step one to decide which real environments merit attention.

When a hosted browser service helps
A hosted service can provide remote browser and device combinations when your team does not maintain the required environments locally. BrowserStack documents Playwright configurations across browsers, operating systems, versions, and devices, as well as manual cross-browser testing and browser automation products. Check its current supported combinations when planning runs: availability can change, and the documentation does not establish a universal matrix or pricing comparison.
Compare a local setup and a hosted service on the dimensions that affect your workflow: whether you need a bundled engine or branded browser, which operating systems and devices are available, whether emulation is enough or physical-device access matters, how runs fit into CI, and the maintenance and cost of the setup.

For a website screenshot—not a substitute for interactive cross-browser testing—ScreenshotNeo can capture a URL with one GET request. The call below saves a WebP screenshot; see the ScreenshotNeo API docs for request options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Playwright WebKit test count as a Safari test?
No. Playwright’s WebKit build is not branded Safari. Use an actual Safari environment for platform-sensitive behavior where that distinction matters.
Is mobile emulation enough for cross-browser testing?
It can check simulated viewport and device parameters, but it does not establish how every physical device behaves. Add real-device checks for critical hardware- or platform-dependent behavior.
