For a normal browser click, locate the target element and call element.click(). Use Selenium’s ActionChains when you need a mouse gesture such as hovering, right-clicking, double-clicking, holding, or dragging. The examples below use Selenium’s Python API and explain how to handle clicks blocked by overlays.
Install Selenium and start a browser
The Selenium Python API reference lists Selenium 4.49.0 and Python 3.10 or newer as supported; the Selenium downloads page lists 4.49.0 as stable, released September 9, 2026. These details can change, so check the Python API reference and downloads page for current requirements.
Install Selenium in a virtual environment to keep project dependencies separate. In a terminal, create and activate a virtual environment using the command appropriate for your operating system, then run:
pip install -U selenium
Selenium Manager can handle browser and driver installation automatically in common setups with modern Selenium. You can also specify browser and driver locations manually when your environment requires it. See Selenium’s WebDriver documentation for browser setup and remote execution guidance.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Click a web element with WebElement.click()
Use this for the ordinary case: activate a button, link, or other located element. Selenium scrolls an out-of-viewport target into view and checks that it is interactable. The click targets the element’s center, so another element covering that point can prevent the click.
from selenium import webdriver
from selenium.webdriver.common.by import By
driver = webdriver.Chrome()
try:
driver.get("https://example.com")
button = driver.find_element(By.CSS_SELECTOR, "button")
button.click()
finally:
driver.quit()
Remove the leading space before driver = webdriver.Chrome() if copying the code exactly; it should align with the other top-level lines. Replace the example URL and CSS selector with the page and target you need. Selenium’s first-script example uses the same pattern: locate a button, then call .click().

Use ActionChains for mouse gestures
ActionChains is for pointer interactions or sequences beyond a straightforward element click. Build the desired action chain, then call .perform() to execute it.
from selenium.webdriver.common.action_chains import ActionChains
# Double-click an element
ActionChains(driver).double_click(element).perform()
# Right-click (context-click) an element
ActionChains(driver).context_click(element).perform()
# Move the pointer over an element
ActionChains(driver).move_to_element(element).perform()
# Hold, move, and release to drag an element to a target
ActionChains(driver).drag_and_drop(source, target).perform()
The documented gesture methods include:
click(element)for a pointer click on an element, orclick()at the current pointer position.context_click(element)for a right-click.double_click(element)for two clicks.click_and_hold(element)andrelease()for a held-button interaction.move_to_element(element)and offset-based movement for hover and pointer positioning.drag_and_drop(source, target)for a drag-and-release sequence.
Selenium’s mouse-action reference lists left, right, back, and forward buttons; middle-click is currently unsupported. Consult the mouse actions reference and ActionChains API for method details.

Choose the method that matches the interaction
| Need | Use | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Activate a located button, link, or similar element | element.click() |
Direct element click with Selenium’s interactability checks. |
| Click as part of pointer movement or a sequence | ActionChains(driver).click(element).perform() |
Queues pointer actions and runs them together. |
| Right-click, double-click, hover, hold, or drag | The corresponding ActionChains method |
Expresses the intended mouse gesture. |
Troubleshoot clicks that do not work
Element click is intercepted
An element-click-intercepted error can occur when an overlay, modal, sticky header, or other page element covers the center of the target. Inspect the page at the time of the failure, identify the obstruction, and wait for it to disappear or be dismissed before retrying the click. Simply finding the element does not establish that its center is unobstructed.
The target is outside the viewport
The standard element-click command scrolls an out-of-viewport target into view before checking interactability. If the click still fails, inspect whether a page element covers its center or whether the target is otherwise not interactable.
A gesture needs to happen in order
For hover-then-click or other pointer sequences, build the sequence with ActionChains and finish with .perform(). Without performing the queued actions, the chain is not executed.

Browser or driver does not start
Check the installed Selenium version, Python version, and browser setup. Selenium Manager handles browser and driver installation in common modern setups, but Selenium also permits manual browser and driver specification when necessary. The official documentation supports Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari; setup details vary by browser and environment.

Run browser tests remotely or at scale
For tests that need remote browser control or scaling beyond a local browser, Selenium documents Remote WebDriver and Selenium Grid. Its documentation describes Grid as a way to scale tests and Remote WebDriver as a way to control browsers remotely; consult the Grid documentation for configuration and operating details. Selenium describes WebDriver as driving a browser natively in its WebDriver documentation.

Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is a webpage screenshot rather than testing mouse interaction, ScreenshotNeo returns an image or PDF from one GET request. For example, this cURL call captures a page as WebP:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and response details. It accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server offers screenshot and page-information tools for AI agents. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Sign up free for 1,000 screenshots a month, with no card required.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Selenium click an element that is not currently visible?
The standard element-click command scrolls an out-of-viewport target into view before checking interactability. A covering element at the target’s center can still block the click.
Does Selenium support middle-click with its mouse actions?
The Selenium mouse-action reference says middle click is currently unsupported.
