For a new project, Sass with SCSS is a practical default to evaluate if your team wants CSS-like syntax and a documented module system. Choose Less when your project or build already uses Less.js; choose Stylus when the team deliberately prefers its flexible, punctuation-light syntax. Existing conventions, build-tool support, and readability for the people maintaining the styles should decide the choice—not a universal ranking.
Sass vs. Less vs. Stylus at a glance
| Preprocessor | Authoring syntax | Variables | Notable organization or reuse features | Good reason to choose it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sass / SCSS | SCSS uses braces and semicolons and is CSS-like; Sass also supports an indented syntax. | $name: value; |
Mixins, functions, control flow, and modules. @use loads members under a namespace; @forward can expose members through a stylesheet. |
You want CSS-like SCSS and a documented module system, or your project already uses Sass. |
| Less | CSS-like syntax with braces and declarations, extended with features such as nesting. | @name: value; |
Mixins and nesting, with Less-specific syntax and scoping behavior. | Your codebase or build workflow already uses Less.js. |
| Stylus | Supports CSS-style and indented syntax; braces, colons, and semicolons can be optional. | Commonly name = value; $ is also allowed in identifiers. |
Mixins and functions, property lookup, interpolation, conditionals, iteration, and nested selectors. | Your team prefers its syntax flexibility and can keep the resulting styles consistent. |
These are language and workflow differences, not browser-rendering alternatives: each tool compiles authoring-time stylesheet code to CSS. The feature descriptions above reflect the tools’ documentation; the recommendations are practical guidance, not benchmark results.
What are Sass, Less, and Stylus?
Each is a stylesheet language that adds ways to organize or generate styles while you author them. A compiler translates the source into CSS that browsers can consume. The browser does not need to understand Sass, Less, or Stylus; your project needs a build or loading workflow that produces the CSS it serves.
Sass and SCSS are two syntaxes for Sass
Sass is the language, not a separate product from SCSS. SCSS uses familiar CSS braces and semicolons and is described in Sass documentation as a CSS superset with a few exceptions. The alternative indented Sass syntax uses indentation instead of braces. Sass documentation describes SCSS as its most popular syntax.

For current Sass work, check the Dart Sass implementation. The Sass documentation available on October 3, 2026 identifies Dart Sass 1.105.1 and marks LibSass and Ruby Sass as retired implementations. Version information can change, so check the current Sass documentation when selecting a version or integration.
Less extends CSS and compiles through Less.js
Less describes itself as a backwards-compatible language extension for CSS; Less.js converts Less source into CSS. Its documentation shows Node.js compilation with lessc and also describes browser-side loading. Browser loading is an available documented approach, not a requirement: choose the compilation workflow that fits your project.
Stylus makes syntax flexibility a central choice
Stylus accepts conventional CSS-style authoring as well as an indented style with optional punctuation. Its documented features include variables, interpolation, mixins, functions, conditionals, iteration, and nested selectors. The freedom to omit punctuation is a style option, not evidence that a team will automatically write or maintain styles faster.

How do their syntax and reuse features differ?
A small example makes the variable conventions visible. These snippets illustrate the tools’ documented syntax; they are not intended to be mixed into one stylesheet.
| Tool | Variable and nested rule example |
|---|---|
| SCSS | $accent: #1769aa; |
| Less | @accent: #1769aa; |
| Stylus | accent = #1769aa |
All three provide ways to reuse styles, but the details and syntax differ. Sass has mixins, functions, and control flow. Its module system is especially explicit: @use loads another Sass stylesheet’s variables, functions, and mixins into a namespace. @forward lets a stylesheet expose members to files that load it with @use. Sass also documents @import; distinguish that directive from module-based @use rather than treating the two as interchangeable.
Less offers mixins and nesting in its CSS-like language, along with its own syntax and scoping behavior. Stylus uses a shared definition style for mixins and functions in different contexts, and documents features such as property lookup. The right fit depends on which constructs your code actually needs and which conventions your team can read comfortably.

Which CSS preprocessor should you use?
Start with the codebase and build integration
If a project already has Sass, Less, or Stylus files, plugins, scripts, or shared conventions, keeping that workflow is often the least disruptive decision. Before adding or replacing a compiler, confirm that your build tool supports the implementation and version you intend to use. A syntax preference does not compensate for an unsupported integration.
For a new project, evaluate Sass with SCSS first
SCSS looks close to ordinary CSS, and Sass documents a module system based on @use and @forward. That makes it a practical default to evaluate when the team is starting fresh and wants familiar punctuation plus explicit namespacing for shared members. It is a recommendation to assess, not a claim that Sass is universally best.
Keep Less when Less.js is already part of the workflow
Less is a sensible choice when an existing site or toolchain already compiles Less. Its CSS-like structure can also suit teams that prefer that style. For a greenfield project, compare its build integration and the features you need rather than choosing it only because the syntax looks familiar.

Choose Stylus when its flexibility is intentional
Stylus fits teams that want a choice between CSS-like and indented authoring or value its other documented language features. Agree on a consistent syntax and style rules before relying on optional punctuation; otherwise, the flexibility can make files less uniform for teammates.
Do not choose by unsupported popularity claims
The available official documentation establishes syntax and feature differences, but it does not provide a comparable measure of adoption, employment demand, or current maintenance cadence across all three tools. It is not enough to conclude that one is most used, that another is obsolete, or that a particular one is an industry standard. Check the tools’ current release and integration information when maintenance status matters to your decision.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to check before switching
- Inventory the source: identify existing file extensions, compiler dependencies, shared styles, and any tool-specific syntax before planning a migration.
- Verify the build path: confirm that the project’s build tool supports the intended compiler and that the resulting CSS is generated where the application expects it.
- Compare readability with real examples: have the people who will maintain the styles review representative variables, nested rules, and reusable styles—not just a short syntax sample.
- Check organization needs: if shared variables, functions, and mixins need clear boundaries, evaluate Sass’s namespaced
@useand re-exporting@forwarddirectly against your project’s needs. - Plan for convention consistency: this matters especially if adopting Stylus’s optional punctuation or multiple syntax styles.
- Test the output in the project: compile representative styles through the real build workflow and confirm the generated CSS behaves as intended before migrating broadly.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Sass better than Less?
Not in every project. Sass with SCSS is a practical option for a new project that values CSS-like syntax and Sass’s documented module system; Less can be the better fit when the existing code or build already uses Less.js.
Is Stylus still used?
The feature documentation establishes what Stylus supports, but it does not establish current adoption or release cadence relative to Sass and Less. Check current project and build-tool information rather than inferring popularity or maintenance from syntax documentation.
