Exploratory testing is a purposeful way to investigate software in which the tester learns about the product, designs and runs tests, and evaluates what happens at the same time. Each observation helps determine what to try next. It is adaptive—not random clicking—and can work alongside scripted and automated tests.

What is exploratory testing?

ISO/IEC/IEEE 29119-1:2022 defines exploratory testing as “experience-based testing (3.36) in which the tester spontaneously designs and executes tests based on the tester’s existing relevant knowledge, prior exploration of the test item (3.107) (including the results of previous tests), and heuristic ‘rules of thumb’ regarding common software behaviours and types of failure”. ISO/IEC/IEEE 29119-1:2022 is the formal source for that definition.

In practice, the tester investigates a product while learning how it behaves. A result may raise a question, suggest a risk, or reveal an unexpected state; the tester uses that information to choose the next action. ISTQB describes the approach in terms of simultaneous learning, test design, execution, and evaluation. The work is experience-based but still purposeful: it has an area and question worth investigating.

How to run an exploratory testing session

1. Choose a goal

Pick a feature, journey, recent change, or uncertain risk, then state what you want to learn. A useful goal is specific enough to focus attention but does not prescribe every click. For example: “Investigate how checkout handles interrupted payment attempts” gives direction while leaving room to follow evidence. GOV.UK guidance recommends stating a goal for each session.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

2. Set a lightweight charter

A charter is a brief mission statement, not a test script. It can record the goal and scope, tester, time and place, environment, and test data. Keep it broad enough to let the tester adapt when findings change the investigation. Fowler’s practical commentary likewise treats charters as a way to maintain focus while allowing exploration.

Example:

  • Mission: Explore recovery from interrupted checkout.
  • Scope: Payment submission, refresh, back navigation, and retry.
  • Environment and data: Staging build; test account and supported payment test data.
  • Focus: Look for lost state, duplicate attempts, unclear messages, or inconsistent order status.

3. Explore and adapt

Interact with the system, observe the result, and ask what it suggests. Try variations that could expose meaningful differences: valid and invalid data, boundary values, interrupted actions, or a different order of steps. Follow unexpected behavior far enough to understand its context, then decide whether it merits a defect, another test, or a question for the team. Do not mistake novelty for value: each action should help answer the session’s question or investigate a relevant risk.

4. Record evidence as you go

Keep concise notes of the questions you pursued, actions that matter, expected and actual results, and follow-up ideas. Save screenshots, logs, or recordings when they help explain an observation. Evidence should make it easier for another person to investigate or reproduce a possible defect; include relevant build, environment, and test-data details where available.

5. Debrief and make findings actionable

At the end, report the area explored, how the session proceeded, defects or concerns found, open questions, and supporting evidence. A defect report should include enough context and useful reproduction steps to enable investigation. When a discovery represents a behavior the team wants to check repeatedly, turn it into a manual scenario or automated test.

Do exploratory tests need charters or timeboxes?

No. Charters and timeboxes are helpful practices, not requirements inherent in exploratory testing. A charter gives a session a mission and boundaries without scripting its steps. A timebox can help prevent drift and make sessions easier to schedule and debrief, while leaving the tester free to adapt within the allotted period. The exploratory testing FAQ describes neither as mandatory.

Use them when they make a session more focused or manageable. A loose investigation may need only a clear question and a record of what was learned; a team coordinating several testers may benefit from consistent charters, time limits, and debriefs.

Exploratory testing and scripted testing work together

Exploratory testing is especially useful when behavior is unclear, requirements leave open questions, or a team needs to investigate a changed area and generate new tests. Scripted tests encode known expectations and can provide repeatable checks. A finding from exploration can become a scripted scenario or automated check when the behavior is worth verifying in future runs. GOV.UK guidance explicitly describes developing exploratory discoveries into automated tests. These approaches address different needs rather than competing for a single place in a test strategy.

Tools and evidence capture

A dedicated testing product is not needed to begin: a tester can use notes on paper or a simple document. Depending on the work, useful tools may capture video or logs, organize session notes, attach evidence to defect reports, or help turn scenarios into manual cases. Choose based on how well a tool captures and exports evidence, connects findings to session goals, supports handoff into bug tracking or repeatable tests, and fits the team’s existing workflow.

As one vendor example—not a comparative recommendation—Tricentis documentation for Tosca 2026.1 describes a workflow using session charters, scenarios, screenshots or video, and generation of manual test cases. ISO/IEC 30130:2016 provides a framework for describing testing-tool capabilities; ISO reports that it was reviewed and confirmed current in 2022. The available sources do not establish which vendor tool is best.

Capture a page screenshot as session evidence

If a web-testing session turns up a visual state worth sharing, a screenshot can make the observation easier to discuss. You can capture it yourself in the browser: open the page in the relevant environment, reproduce the state, and use the operating system’s screenshot shortcut or browser capture facility. Include the page state and relevant context in your session notes; a screenshot alone does not record the steps or conditions that produced it.

Or skip the browser setup

For an API capture, make one GET request. The ScreenshotNeo API documentation covers its parameters.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server by Yorker Media. It accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, with page-verdict and billing information in response headers. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. See ScreenshotNeo for the service. Sign up for free: 1,000 screenshots a month, no card required.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Clicking without a question: Pick an investigation goal so actions build useful knowledge rather than a list of unrelated interactions.
  • Writing a script and calling it exploration: Record the mission, not every action; adapting to observations is central to the method.
  • Failing to preserve context: Notes and evidence should explain what was explored and help a teammate investigate a finding.
  • Treating a discovery as repeatable coverage: If a behavior needs to be checked again, turn the useful finding into a scenario or automated check.
  • Assuming tools or formal session mechanics are mandatory: Start with a question and simple notes; add tools, charters, or time limits when they improve the work.
