For an existing AngularJS single-page application, use a practical test pyramid: test pure logic and services quickly, cover AngularJS wiring and rendered behavior with focused integration tests, and keep a small browser-level suite for critical user journeys. First check the app’s actual versions and test setup rather than copying commands from modern Angular guides. AngularJS support ended in January 2022, and Protractor reached end of life in August 2023, so treat the old tool pairing as historical context—not a recommendation to start a new Protractor suite.
Identify the framework and test setup you actually have
AngularJS (also called Angular 1) is a different framework from modern Angular. The current Angular testing guide describes current Angular projects, not a drop-in setup for AngularJS. It says new Angular CLI projects default to Vitest while Karma remains supported; that is useful context, but its commands and configuration should not be copied into an AngularJS repository without checking compatibility (Angular testing guide).
Before changing dependencies or adding a runner, inspect the repository and establish what it already supports:
- Check
package.jsonand the lock file for the AngularJS version, test runner, assertion library, browser automation packages, and scripts. - Look for existing Karma, Jasmine, or end-to-end configuration files and read the project’s test scripts.
- Confirm which browsers and operating systems the application is expected to support.
- Run the existing test command first. Note whether it watches files locally, runs once for CI, or requires a browser or separate application server.
The AngularJS project’s developer guide documents Jasmine and Karma for unit and integration tests, and Protractor for end-to-end tests. That is the framework project’s historical convention, not a requirement for every application today (AngularJS developer guide). No one set of package versions or commands is safe to prescribe for every inherited AngularJS app; use documentation matching the versions in your repository.

Choose the right test level for each behavior
Unit tests: fast checks for isolated logic
Use unit tests for functions and services whose behavior can be checked from inputs and outputs. Cover normal cases as well as meaningful edge cases such as missing values, invalid input, boundary conditions, and rejected operations. Keep the test focused: a failure should point to one small piece of behavior rather than a full page journey.
Integration tests: verify AngularJS pieces working together
Use focused integration tests when the behavior depends on AngularJS wiring—for example, a service interacting with another dependency, or a directive/component rendering a template and responding to an interaction. The aim is to test the collaboration that matters without launching a full browser journey for every case.
AngularJS testing APIs and setup can vary with the app’s installed version and dependencies. Check the matching documentation before writing version-specific mocks for HTTP, routes, directives, or components. Do not substitute modern Angular’s HttpTestingController patterns into AngularJS tests.

End-to-end tests: protect a few important journeys
End-to-end (E2E) tests launch the application in a browser and exercise the rendered interface as a user would. Reserve them for high-value paths, such as completing a key form or reaching an important success state. They provide confidence across routing, rendering, and interaction, but are slower and typically involve more moving parts than unit tests.

Prefer assertions about visible outcomes over checks of private framework internals. The archived Protractor tutorial demonstrates the shape of a browser test—navigate, locate controls, type, click, and assert rendered text—but it should not be treated as a current setup recommendation (Protractor tutorial).
Design a representative browser test around a user outcome
For a typical single-page app flow, the test might open a route, enter valid information, submit the form, and verify the success state. Write down the user-visible expectation first. Choose selectors that identify stable, meaningful controls or content; avoid selectors coupled to incidental markup or framework internals when a user-facing selector is available.

- Navigate to the route or page where the task begins.
- Locate the relevant controls using stable identifiers or selectors tied to meaningful UI elements.
- Enter representative valid data and perform the action a user would take.
- Assert the resulting visible behavior—for example, a confirmation message or updated page state.
The historic Protractor tutorial uses APIs such as browser.get, locators, sendKeys, click, and text assertions to illustrate those interactions. Use it to understand the browser-test pattern, not as evidence that Protractor remains supported or suitable for a new suite (Protractor tutorial).
Make async behavior and external dependencies predictable
Network responses, timers, and other asynchronous outcomes can make a test pass or fail depending on timing or external service availability. Where possible, control those outcomes so the test exercises a known response and produces repeatable results. Keep assertions tied to the behavior that follows the response, not to an arbitrary pause that happens to work on one machine.

Consult documentation for the installed version before adding code for those cases. Do not borrow current Angular testing APIs simply because they appear in newer documentation.

Run tests in CI and use coverage carefully
Have CI run the repository’s established test command and provide the browser environment required by the existing suite. Make sure that environment matches the browsers the app is meant to support; a passing run in one browser does not establish compatibility with every supported browser.
Coverage can help identify code that tests do not exercise, but a high coverage figure does not show that tests assert meaningful behavior. Use it as a diagnostic alongside the test cases, not as a substitute for clear behavioral checks. Current Angular CI instructions do not establish a specific CI command for AngularJS, so retain and verify the setup appropriate to the inherited project.

Protractor reached end of life in August 2023. Its project discourages new adoption and recommends that existing users migrate to another end-to-end testing solution (Protractor project). The AngularJS project’s older testing convention pairs it with Jasmine and Karma, but that does not make Protractor a sound choice for a new test suite.

If an app already has Protractor tests, evaluate replacement options against the app and team rather than picking a tool by name alone. Check browser and operating-system coverage, compatibility with the legacy app and its supported browsers, selector strategy, debugging workflow, CI integration, team familiarity, and ongoing maintenance. The current Angular guide mentions Playwright and WebdriverIO as browser-provider options in its Angular/Vitest context; that is not proof either is automatically compatible with every AngularJS app. Verify the candidate against your own application and environment (Angular testing guide).

Can modern Angular testing commands be used in AngularJS?
Not without verifying compatibility. AngularJS and modern Angular are distinct frameworks; use setup instructions and APIs matched to the installed AngularJS version.
Should a new AngularJS test suite use Protractor?
No. Protractor reached end of life in August 2023, and its project discourages new adoption.
