Start with one behavior users rely on, decide whether it truly needs a browser test, then write a small test that arranges a known state, performs an action, and checks an observable result. The best framework depends on your project’s language, browser needs, and preferred setup and debugging workflow; there is no universal choice.

Decide what to automate first

Choose a frequently used behavior with a result you can observe—for example, submitting a valid form and seeing a confirmation. Before opening a browser, ask whether the behavior needs an end-to-end check. The Selenium project’s Overview of Test Automation advises: “First, start by asking yourself whether or not you really need to use a browser.” Browser-based functional tests can be expensive to run and may require substantial infrastructure. If a smaller unit or integration test can answer the question, use that simpler layer instead.

For an initial browser test, keep the scope narrow: one meaningful user action and one clear outcome. Long end-to-end tests are harder to diagnose and can increase the infrastructure involved. Selenium’s guidance recommends keeping test actions short.

Choose a framework that fits your project

Begin with the language and tooling already used by the application or team where possible. Then consider which browser coverage the project requires and which setup and debugging workflow you can work with. The official guides below illustrate different approaches; they do not establish a universal winner or a complete, version-by-version compatibility comparison.

Option What its official guide establishes Questions to ask
Selenium WebDriver A language-neutral WebDriver interface controls browser behavior. Selenium’s getting-started guidance describes installing a language binding, a browser, and a browser driver. The project also documents Selenium IDE and Grid. Does the project need Selenium’s language and browser ecosystem or an established WebDriver workflow? Would a low-code record-and-playback introduction help?
Cypress The first-test tutorial demonstrates visiting a page, finding an element, interacting with it, and asserting the result. Its application guide covers a local development workflow. Does its documented workflow fit the project and how you want to run and debug browser tests?
Playwright The writing-tests guide demonstrates test fixtures and built-in assertions. Do its fixture and assertion model suit the project? Check the current official documentation for installation and browser-support details.

Choose one framework and follow its official first-test guide rather than trying several at once. Documentation changes, so use the live setup guide for the version and environment you are installing.

Build a first browser test in three parts

A maintainable starter test has a simple shape: arrange a known state, act, and assert what changed. Cypress describes these as establishing application state, performing an action, and asserting the resulting state; Selenium similarly discusses data setup, discrete actions, and evaluation.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  1. Arrange: Start the application and prepare the data or state the test needs. Prefer predictable input over relying on whatever happens to be in a shared or production-like environment.
  2. Act: Visit the relevant page and perform one meaningful interaction, such as submitting a form.
  3. Assert: Check a visible or otherwise observable result tied to the behavior, such as a confirmation message.

Give the test a name that states the user behavior and expected outcome. Use stable element queries and assertions that reflect what a user should see or experience, rather than incidental implementation details.

Run it locally and keep it deterministic

Where the framework supports it, run the test against a local development server before adding CI or more browser complexity. Cypress’s application testing guide recommends starting the app server separately; it cautions against launching that server from inside Cypress test scripts. Follow the chosen framework’s current guide for its exact launch and test commands, since this topic does not specify a framework or project stack.

Set up Selenium when it fits

Selenium’s getting-started documentation describes three basic ingredients: a Selenium language binding, a browser, and that browser’s driver. WebDriver is the language-neutral interface for controlling browser behavior, while the browser-specific driver mediates between Selenium and the browser. Selenium documentation also says bindings use Selenium Manager by default to manage drivers and browsers. Because exact setup depends on the language, browser, and current version, use Selenium’s live installation and first-script instructions rather than copying a one-size-fits-all command.

If you want an introductory, low-code way to explore browser interactions, Selenium also offers Selenium IDE for recording and replaying tests. Treat playback as a starting point: review the resulting steps and assertions so the test checks the intended behavior and remains understandable.

Or skip the browser setup

For capturing a website screenshot rather than building a browser test, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API. It is not a replacement for an assertion-based end-to-end test. For example, this cURL request saves a screenshot of Stripe’s website; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the available parameters.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. An MCP server provides screenshot tools for AI agents, and the Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.

Troubleshoot a first test

  • The browser or driver does not start: For Selenium, verify that the selected language binding and browser are installed, and consult the current Selenium setup guidance for driver management and version-specific steps.
  • The test cannot reach the application: Confirm the local server is running and the test is using the correct address. With Cypress, start the development server separately from the test script as its guide recommends.
  • An element cannot be found: Check that the test has reached the expected page and that the query targets an element present in the rendered state. Prefer a stable selector and wait using the framework’s documented approach rather than relying on a guessed delay.
  • The result changes between runs: Make the starting data and application state repeatable, and ensure the assertion checks an outcome that follows from the test’s own action.
  • A failure is difficult to understand: Reduce the test to one behavior, a short sequence of actions, and a specific assertion. A smaller test is easier to diagnose than a broad user journey.

What to do after the first pass

Once the small test runs reliably on your machine, add coverage for another important behavior only when it provides distinct value. Keep each test focused, then decide whether the project needs additional browsers or automated CI runs. Those decisions depend on the application and team; this general introduction does not establish a particular browser matrix, CI configuration, or framework version.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is browser automation the right place for every test?

No. Use it when checking behavior through a browser adds value; a lighter unit or integration test may answer other questions with less overhead.

Which framework should a beginner choose?

Start with the language and workflow already used by the project, then check the current official setup guide and required browser support. The available guidance does not establish one best framework for every stack.

Do I need to buy special hardware to get started?

The basic first step is software and an application to test. The topic does not establish a need for a special peripheral or device; follow the needs of your project.
