If JavaScript works in one browser but fails in another, reproduce the failure in the affected browser, identify the exact syntax or API involved, and check its support for the browser version you need. Fix the cause with a capability check, fallback, polyfill, or alternative implementation; then test the change across your target browsers. Avoid guessing from a browser name or user-agent string.
Start by reproducing the failure
Before changing code, confirm what fails and where. Record the action that triggers the problem, the expected result, what actually happens, the browser and version, operating system, device, and whether the failure is consistent. Reproduce it in the affected target browser.
Open the browser’s developer tools. Check the console for syntax errors, exceptions, warnings, and failed network requests. Use the debugger to step through the failing path and inspect relevant values. A compatibility problem is not automatically a browser bug: ordinary errors in logic, scope, naming, or asynchronous timing can look browser-specific. MDN’s JavaScript troubleshooting guidance recommends checking general JavaScript problems as well as compatibility.
Identify what actually differs
Syntax or language feature
If the browser reports a parse error, identify the syntax it cannot parse. A transpiler can transform newer JavaScript syntax for a chosen target, but it does not automatically supply every runtime API used by the transformed code.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Web API or runtime capability
If the code parses but fails when it calls a browser feature, determine whether the relevant object, method, or property exists and whether its behavior meets your needs. Compatibility data covers both JavaScript language features and Web APIs. Check the exact feature and target versions in the MDN browser-compat-data project, rather than relying on an old general browser-support table. Its data changes as browsers ship features, standards change, and bugs are discovered.
Logic, timing, or implementation behavior
Check variable scope, naming conflicts, this binding, closures, and whether asynchronous work has completed before its result is used. Browsers can also ship support at different times or implement features differently, and implementation bugs do occur. Establish that the failure is tied to a specific unsupported feature or behavior before adding compatibility code.

Choose a remedy based on the missing capability
- Feature detection: Test for the precise capability before calling it, and select supported code or a fallback. For example, check whether the specific method exists on the object you need. The check should match the feature; a browser brand is not proof that a capability exists.
- Fallback or alternative: Preserve the user’s task with a simpler route when an enhancement is unavailable. MDN gives a static map as an alternative when geolocation is absent. If a legacy browser is outside your agreed support policy, you may instead decide not to provide that advanced experience there.
- Polyfill: Use one when an API gap is appropriate to fill, after confirming that the chosen polyfill implements the needed behavior in your target browsers. Consider its maintenance, bundle size, and performance. A polyfill is not a universal fix for every browser difference.
- Library: A library may normalize behavior or provide a higher-level API, but it adds a dependency and cannot guarantee identical behavior in every environment. Confirm that its coverage and trade-offs fit your target requirements.
- Browser-specific workaround: Reserve this for a demonstrated implementation bug or behavior difference that capability checks cannot address. Isolate and document the workaround, and test it in both affected and unaffected browsers.
- Target-policy decision: If an older browser is not required by your audience or product contract, explicitly decide whether to stop supporting it instead of accumulating risky compatibility code.
Feature detection is usually safer than branching on browser identity. MDN explains that user-agent strings can overlap, be misleading, or be spoofed, and that parsing them reliably is difficult. See MDN’s guidance on browser detection and user-agent sniffing.
Test the fix against the browsers your audience uses
Choose a target list from audience needs and project requirements, including relevant desktop browsers such as Firefox, Safari, Chrome, and Edge and the mobile platforms your product supports. Add versions that matter to your support policy; do not assume a browser name alone identifies a version’s capabilities. MDN’s introduction to cross-browser testing recommends testing in target browsers and checking small parts as you develop, rather than leaving all testing until the end.

- Turn the failing action into a repeatable test case with an expected result.
- Make the smallest change that addresses the identified syntax, API, or behavior difference.
- Run the test in the browser and version that failed, then check the other browsers in your agreed target list for regressions.
- Repeat the test after later changes that affect the same code path.
Use physical devices when you need to verify behavior on actual hardware. Emulators and virtual machines can widen coverage when you cannot access every device, but choose the environment with its fidelity, browser and version availability, operating-system coverage, repeatability, and cost in mind. No one testing setup is best for every team.
Common cross-browser failures and what to do
| Symptom | Likely cause to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| A parse error appears before the code runs. | The target browser may not understand the syntax, or the code may contain a syntax error. | Inspect the exact error and source location. Validate the code, then check support for that syntax in the target version. Consider transpilation if the syntax is the issue. |
| The script runs, then throws when calling a method or reading a property. | The runtime API may be missing, or the value may not be what the code expects. | Inspect the object and value in the debugger. Check support for the exact API and use a capability check with a fallback or appropriate polyfill. |
| A result is missing or stale only in one browser. | Execution order or asynchronous timing may differ, or a code path may rely on an assumption that is not valid there. | Step through the code and verify when the asynchronous result becomes available. Check logic and state before treating it as a compatibility gap. |
| A browser-name conditional fixes one case but breaks another. | The user-agent string may not reliably identify the relevant capability; browser identifiers can overlap or be spoofed. | Replace the branch with a check for the capability itself and a fallback where possible. |
| A polyfill does not resolve the issue. | The problem may concern behavior beyond the API it implements, unsupported syntax, another missing dependency, or an ordinary code defect. | Recheck the failing line and feature boundary. Verify the polyfill’s target coverage and test the complete user task in the affected browser. |
| The local test passes, but a device or hosted environment fails. | The environments may differ in browser version, operating system, or hardware. | Record the exact environment and reproduce there if possible. Compare the relevant versions and add that environment to the test matrix if it is in scope. |
Capture reproducible browser results
When debugging depends on comparing what a page renders in different environments, a screenshot can preserve the visible result for a bug report or regression record. For a manual comparison, capture the page in each target browser after reproducing the same action; screenshots do not replace inspecting the console, runtime state, or network activity.
