A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Flaky tests and brittle suites usually come from choices about test scope, synchronization, data, and diagnosis—not from a framework alone. Build a balanced portfolio: fast focused tests for logic and component interactions, a small set of end-to-end tests for essential user journeys, and enough diagnostics to make failures actionable.
1. Automating too much through the UI
A browser end-to-end test exercises many layers at once. That makes it useful for checking a complete customer journey, but it also exposes the test to browser behavior, timing, data, and dependency failures. Large UI suites tend to run slowly, break when the interface changes, and make it harder to identify the failing component.
Use the test level that matches the risk being checked:
| Test level | Best suited to | Trade-off to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Unit | Focused logic in a function or component, with dependencies kept narrow. | Fast feedback, but it cannot establish that the whole system works together. |
| Service/API or integration | Interactions across components or service behavior that does not need a real browser journey. | Broader behavior than a unit test with less UI complexity, but it may not verify the actual user interface. |
| UI/end-to-end | A small number of high-value, complete user journeys that smaller tests cannot reliably evaluate. | Higher exposure to timing, browser, data, and environment problems; typically slower and more expensive to maintain. |
Martin Fowler’s Practical Test Pyramid explains the trade-offs among test layers. The pyramid is a heuristic, not a required architecture or a universal ratio. A 2015 Google article offered a 70/20/10 split as a first guess, while noting that teams differ; do not treat that figure as a target for every product. The right mix depends on the system, its risks, and what each layer can reliably prove.

2. Treating flaky failures as normal
A flaky test changes outcome without a code change. John Micco’s 2016 post about Google defines flaky results as tests that “exhibit both a passing and a failing result with the same code.” Google reported about 1.5% of its test runs produced a flaky result in that post. That is a historical, organization-specific figure—not a current industry benchmark.
Flakiness erodes confidence in the suite: when failures are routinely dismissed, a real regression is easier to overlook. Retries can help confirm a transient failure, and quarantine can move a test out of the critical path while it is investigated. Neither is a repair. Micco notes that retries can add substantial delay and quarantine can mask a real race or product defect. Track recurring failures, investigate their causes, and make quarantined coverage visible.
Use retries as evidence, not as a pass
- Record the original failure even if a retry passes.
- Track which tests are retried or quarantined and review recurring cases.
- Keep quarantined tests out of the critical path only with clear ownership and a route back to normal execution.
3. Using fixed sleeps or asserting before the app is ready
A fixed sleep assumes the application will reach the expected state in a fixed amount of time. That assumption can be too short on a slow run and waste time on a fast one. Instead, wait for the state relevant to the scenario—for example, a specific element to appear or a loading state to end—then assert the behavior that matters. The Selenium project’s Test Practices guidance emphasizes adapting browser-testing practices to the environment rather than expecting one approach to work everywhere.

Keep assertions tied to the test’s purpose. A checkout test might verify that a successful order is placed; it need not also assert every transient label and layout detail on the page.

4. Testing details that change instead of behavior that matters
Assertions against frequently changing copy, layout, or internal structure can fail after harmless interface work. Prefer checks about important behavior and outcomes. When visual fidelity is itself the requirement, make it a targeted visual check and control the viewport and region being compared rather than mixing incidental presentation assertions into every journey.
Fowler’s Practical Test Pyramid distinguishes behavior checks from layout and usability concerns. Choose the test to match the question: functional automation can verify repeatable behavior, while visual review or exploratory testing may be more appropriate for presentation and usability.

5. Sharing mutable state or persistent test data
Tests that depend on leftover records or shared mutable state can contaminate later runs, creating order-dependent failures or affecting external systems. Use isolated, ephemeral test data where possible, and make setup and cleanup explicit. If a test uses fakes or stubs, keep their behavior aligned with the real dependency; otherwise the test may pass against a double that no longer represents production behavior.
Google’s 2016 guidance on good end-to-end tests discusses data isolation and the need for useful failure evidence.
6. Making failures hard to diagnose
A red test is most useful when it gives a developer enough context to reproduce and localize the problem. Preserve readable logs and, where they add useful evidence, screenshots or relevant system and database state. A screenshot can show what the browser displayed at failure time; it does not replace logs or explain every underlying cause.

For browser automation, a screenshot API can capture that visual evidence without requiring a developer to manually take it. ScreenshotNeo is one option for website screenshots, with cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets removed before capture; it bills only clean shots, not bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, or cache hits. Use captured evidence as part of a broader diagnostic record, not as a substitute for a reproducible test and its logs.
7. Comparing test approaches by count instead of purpose
A large number of tests does not by itself show that a suite is reliable or useful. Compare approaches by what they exercise and what a failure tells you:
- Scope and fidelity: Which real behavior or dependencies does the test exercise?
- Feedback speed: How long does it take locally and in CI?
- Reliability: How exposed is it to timing, shared state, external services, browser behavior, or environment differences?
- Maintenance: How likely are ordinary product changes to require test rewrites?
- Debuggability: Does a failure point toward a likely component and preserve evidence needed to reproduce it?
- Purpose: Is the check about focused logic, an integration contract, or an essential end-to-end customer journey?
The Selenium project’s official guidance says, “No one approach works for all situations.” Apply its advice to your environment rather than comparing tools by test count alone.

Automated checks are well suited to repeatable verification and regression protection, but they do not answer every quality question. Exploratory testing can uncover surprising edge cases, usability problems, and design issues that scripted tests may miss. Schedule it alongside automation, then turn valuable discoveries into regression tests where doing so will prevent a repeat failure.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should every flaky test be retried automatically?
No. A retry can help identify a transient failure, but it can also delay diagnosis and conceal a recurring defect. Preserve the first failure and investigate repeated cases.
Does a screenshot prove why a browser test failed?
Not by itself. It records what was visible at capture time; pair it with logs and relevant state to diagnose the cause.
