Combine transforms in one declaration
The transform property accepts a list of transform functions. Separate the functions with spaces, not commas:

transform: translateX(10px) rotate(10deg) scale(1.1);
}This applies translation, rotation, and scaling as one transform value. The functions do not replace one another merely because they share a declaration; their sequence composes into the resulting transformation.
For a restrained hover effect, you could write:
.card {
transition: transform 180ms ease;
}
.card:hover {
transform: translateY(-4px) rotate(1deg) scale(1.02);
}The transition animates changes to the transform value. Choose values appropriate for your interface, and account for users who prefer reduced motion.

Why function order matters
Transform functions are not generally interchangeable. Each operation affects the coordinate space used by the composition, so a translation before a rotation can produce a different result from a translation after it. The W3C describes the final transformation as the product of matrices corresponding to the functions in the list. You do not need to calculate those matrices for ordinary styling, but the model explains why rearranging the functions changes the result.
Compare these rules:

transform: rotate(30deg) translateX(100px);
}Both use the same values, but in a different sequence. The resulting placement can differ because the translation is composed with a different coordinate orientation. When the result matters visually, try the intended order on the actual element rather than assuming the functions commute.

Choose between a transform list and individual properties
Use the transform list when you need to specify an arbitrary sequence or use functions such as skewX() and perspective(). CSS also provides separate translate, rotate, and scale properties. These are useful when you want to set or change those components independently, but their composition order is fixed: translate, then rotate, then scale, followed by the transform property. The order in which the declarations appear in the stylesheet does not change that composition order.

transform: skewX(2deg);
}There is no individual skew property, so skewing still uses a transform function. The separate properties are not a replacement for an ordered transform list when a particular sequence is essential.

Set the pivot with transform-origin
transform-origin controls the point around which operations such as rotation and scaling are applied. Its initial value is centered at 50% 50%. If an element rotates around an unexpected point, check its origin as well as the transform-function order.

}Changing the origin changes the pivot; it does not change the element’s normal-flow position or make the transform functions interchangeable.

Know the layout and stacking effects
Transforms change how an element is rendered, not how it is arranged in normal document flow. For example, translating an element visually does not move neighboring content as if the element had acquired a different layout position. A non-none transform also creates a stacking context and makes the transformed element a containing block for positioned descendants. These effects can matter when layering elements or positioning absolutely or fixed-positioned descendants.
Not every box is transformable. If a transform appears to do nothing, check whether the target is a transformable element; exceptions include non-replaced inline boxes and table-column or table-column-group boxes. Also inspect the cascade to see whether another rule overrides the declaration.

Respect reduced-motion preferences
Scaling and zooming animations can be uncomfortable or problematic for some people, including people with migraine. Keep motion restrained and provide a reduced-motion alternative when animating transforms. For example:

}Make sure the information and interaction remain understandable without the animation.
Troubleshoot a transform that looks wrong
- Only one effect seems visible: confirm all desired functions are in the same
transformvalue, separated by spaces, and that no later cascade rule replaces that value. - The element moves in an unexpected direction: swap the function order deliberately and compare the result; the sequence changes the composed coordinate space.
- Rotation or scaling uses the wrong pivot: inspect
transform-origin, whose initial value is centered. - The transform has no visible effect: verify the element is transformable and that the declaration is not overridden.
- Positioned descendants or layering behave differently: account for the stacking context and containing-block effects of a non-
nonetransform. - The animation causes discomfort: honor
prefers-reduced-motionand avoid making motion necessary to understand content.
