Selenium’s official sample form is useful for learning the mechanics, but it is not a signup service and does not establish any real site’s account-creation rules.
What this Selenium example does—and does not—test
The Selenium project’s first-script example uses a generic form at https://www.selenium.dev/selenium/web/web-form.html. The example opens that page, enters text into a field, clicks Submit, reads a result message, and quits the driver. It demonstrates browser interaction; it does not create an account.
Because no target signup application is specified, its field names, required inputs, password rules, duplicate-account behavior, error text, and success destination are unknown. To test a real signup flow, substitute the application’s URL and selectors, then write assertions against that application’s documented contract. Do not treat the sample page’s result message as proof of registration, account persistence, or validation behavior.
Run the basic Java WebDriver flow
The sequence below follows Selenium’s official first-script pattern. It assumes Java and Selenium Java are already available in your project and that a compatible Chrome browser and ChromeDriver setup can launch a session. No particular build tool, Selenium version, or test framework is prescribed here, so this is a class-level example rather than a complete Maven or Gradle project.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
import org.openqa.selenium.By;
import org.openqa.selenium.WebDriver;
import org.openqa.selenium.WebElement;
import org.openqa.selenium.chrome.ChromeDriver;
public class FormExample {
public static void main(String[] args) {
WebDriver driver = new ChromeDriver();
try {
driver.get("https://www.selenium.dev/selenium/web/web-form.html");
WebElement textField = driver.findElement(By.name("my-text"));
textField.sendKeys("Selenium form test");
driver.findElement(By.cssSelector("button")).click();
WebElement message = driver.findElement(By.id("message"));
System.out.println(message.getText());
} finally {
driver.quit();
}
}
}
The sample’s selectors and result element belong to that sample page. When applying the pattern to a signup page, inspect that page’s markup and replace the URL, locators, entered values, and expected outcome. Keep driver.quit() in a finally block so the browser session is closed even if locating an element or interacting with the page throws an exception.
Choose locators that match the actual form
Selenium supports traditional location strategies including ID, name, CSS selector, class name, link text, and others. The right locator is the one that identifies the intended control in the page’s real markup clearly and without ambiguity—not a universally best strategy. See Selenium’s locator strategies documentation.

- 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)
- 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- ID or name: Use when the target control has a meaningful, stable value and it uniquely identifies the element.
- CSS selector: Useful for selecting by attributes or relationships when a simple ID or name is unavailable. Keep it readable and specific enough to avoid selecting the wrong control.
- Class name: Appropriate only when the class identifies the intended element; classes are often shared for styling, so a class by itself may match several controls.
- Link text or other supported strategies: Use when they fit the element and remain understandable as the page evolves.
For a signup form, identify each field and the submit control from the target application’s markup. Check that each locator resolves to the intended element; a selector that happens to work today but ambiguously matches several controls can make later maintenance difficult.
Wait for the page state you need
A completed navigation does not guarantee that JavaScript-driven updates or newly interactive elements are ready. Selenium identifies timing races as a common cause of flaky tests; an explicit wait polls until a stated condition is met. Prefer waiting for the field you need or the expected post-submit state rather than sleeping for an arbitrary fixed interval. See Selenium’s waits documentation.

For a real signup test, wait for the specific observable condition your application promises—for example, a success element to become visible or a validation message to appear. The exact condition and element depend on the target site; neither is established by the generic sample form.
Turn the interaction into a signup test
- Open the target application. Set
driver.get(...)to the signup page you are authorized to test. - Locate and fill the controls. Use locators derived from the actual page markup, and enter values appropriate to the scenario being tested.
- Submit once. Click the identified signup control, then explicitly wait for the relevant success or error state.
- Assert the application contract. Check the outcome the target application documents, such as the presence of a confirmation or a particular validation message. Do not infer account creation from a click or from an unrelated sample-page message.
- Close the session. Put teardown in a
finallyblock or the chosen test framework’s teardown hook so failures do not leave the browser session running.
Negative cases—such as missing required fields, invalid input, or an already registered address—should be added only when the target application’s expected behavior is known. The available official sample documentation does not specify those signup rules.

Common problems and what to check
- The browser does not start: Confirm that your Java project can instantiate
ChromeDriverand that the Chrome browser and driver setup are compatible. This tutorial does not specify a particular Selenium version or dependency configuration. - An element cannot be found: Verify the current URL, inspect the page’s actual markup, and replace sample-page locators with locators for the target application. If the page renders controls asynchronously, wait for the needed condition before interacting.
- The test clicks or types too early: The document may have loaded while the application is still updating. Replace fixed sleeps with an explicit wait for the field or expected state.
- The assertion fails after submission: Check that the assertion matches the target application’s documented result and that the test waited for that state. The Selenium sample’s message is not a signup assertion.
- The browser remains open after a failure: Ensure
driver.quit()runs in afinallyblock or equivalent teardown hook.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Selenium’s sample web form create a user account?
No. It is a generic form used to demonstrate WebDriver interactions, not an account-registration service.
Which test framework should I use for Java signup tests?
The example does not require a particular framework. Choose one that fits your project; the Selenium interaction flow remains the same, while setup and teardown can be placed in that framework’s lifecycle hooks.
Can a screenshot prove that signup succeeded?
A screenshot can show visible page content, but it does not by itself establish account persistence or other application-side effects. Assert the target application’s actual contract for those behaviors.
