The Single Responsibility Principle (SRP) says a class should have one reason to change. In practice, that means grouping behavior that changes for the same reason and separating behavior driven by unrelated requirements—not limiting each class to one method. The right boundary depends on the code’s likely change drivers and how clearly each unit owns its work.

What is the Single Responsibility Principle (SRP)?

SRP is the “S” in SOLID, a set of principles for object-oriented design. Robert C. Martin’s familiar formulation, quoted by Real Python, is: “A class should have only one reason to change.”

A reason to change is a source of change pressure: for example, a stakeholder, policy, or requirement that can evolve independently of other requirements. If two unrelated requests would require edits to the same class, that class may combine separate responsibilities. In Martin’s actor-oriented framing, ask who or what can request each change.

The classic statement is about classes. The same question can also help when drawing boundaries around modules, files, or services, but applying it at those levels is a generalization of the class-focused formulation.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

How can the principle help improve object-oriented design?

When unrelated concerns share a class, a change for one can affect another. That can make the code harder to maintain or test and can make the impact of a change less predictable. Separating concerns aims to reduce that coupling and make ownership clearer; it does not guarantee a measured improvement in every project.

There is no single mechanical test for a responsibility. Predicting which requirements will change independently takes judgment, and developers can reasonably disagree about where a boundary belongs. Compare candidate designs by their independent reasons to change, the cohesion of each unit, the risk of changes rippling across concerns, and whether a new boundary clarifies the design or merely adds indirection. Old Dominion University’s SOLID teaching material likewise emphasizes the thought involved in predicting change.

Example: separate file access from ZIP handling

Consider a FileManager class that reads and writes ordinary files and also compresses and decompresses ZIP archives. File-access conventions can change independently of archive behavior, so the class has two plausible change drivers. Real Python uses this combination as an example of mixed responsibilities in its discussion of SOLID design.

A focused refactoring

  • Put ordinary reading and writing in a file-access component.
  • Put ZIP compression and decompression in an archive component.
  • Keep a small coordinating layer only if callers need a stable operation that intentionally orchestrates both components.

This split gives each component a clearer purpose and separates behavior likely to change for different reasons. It is an explanatory refactoring, not a rule that every method needs a class of its own.

Example: distinguish user, order, and shipping concerns

A module that saves user details, processes orders, and ships items brings together activities that may serve different concerns and change for different reasons. Separating those areas can clarify ownership. The Stack Overflow Blog’s discussion of SOLID uses this kind of example while extending the design question beyond classes.

How to apply SRP to existing code

  1. Name what the unit owns. Describe its behavior in a short phrase, such as “read and write files” or “compress archives.”
  2. Identify change drivers. Ask which stakeholders, policies, or requirements could request changes to that behavior.
  3. Look for independent changes. Check whether those requests arise separately and require unrelated edits to the same unit.
  4. Extract only a useful boundary. If the concerns are genuinely independent, move cohesive behavior into a component named for its purpose, then update callers.
  5. Run the project’s normal checks and reassess. Confirm the behavior remains covered, and make sure the split isolates a meaningful change axis rather than adding confusing indirection.

Common misconceptions

“One responsibility means one method.”

No. A class can have several related operations and still have one coherent reason to change. Conversely, a class with only a few methods may combine unrelated concerns.

“Every noun deserves a class.”

No. Create a boundary when it separates an independent change driver or gives a stakeholder a meaningful area of ownership—not simply because a concept has a name.

“SRP only applies to classes.”

The classic wording names classes. The underlying question can also guide module or service boundaries, but that is an application of the idea beyond its original class-level formulation.

“Applying SRP always improves code.”

No. A split can make code harder to follow if it adds indirection without isolating a real concern. Weigh the clarity and reduced coupling against the complexity of the extra boundary.
