Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →To find a JavaScript memory leak, reproduce the same operation repeatedly, compare heap snapshots or allocation profiles, and follow growing objects’ retaining paths back to the code that keeps them reachable. Fix that ownership or cleanup problem, then repeat the workload and verify that the objects no longer accumulate. A rising memory reading is a reason to investigate—not proof of a leak.
What counts as a JavaScript memory leak?
JavaScript garbage collection is based on reachability. An object can be reclaimed when it is no longer reachable from the program’s roots; it stays in memory if a live reference still leads to it, even if the application no longer needs it. Common owners include globals, caches, event listeners, callbacks, and closures.
Cycles alone are not evidence of a leak: modern engines use mark-and-sweep collection, which can reclaim unreachable cycles. The useful question is not whether objects refer to one another, but whether an unwanted retaining path still connects them to a live root. MDN’s memory-management guide describes this model.
Memory symptoms are not interchangeable. Persistent growth in retained objects may indicate a leak; consistently high use may be memory bloat; frequent garbage collection may cause pauses even if objects are eventually released. Chrome also cautions that there is no universal acceptable-memory threshold: device and browser capabilities differ. Chrome’s memory-problems guide explains these distinctions.

Make the symptom repeatable before profiling
- Write down the suspected lifecycle. Record the exact action, such as opening and closing a view, navigating repeatedly, processing a batch, or serving a recurring request.
- Repeat the same sequence in a stable environment. Compare like with like; unrelated activity can obscure whether the operation retains objects.
- Include the reverse action. For a view, profile opening and closing it, not only opening. Chrome recommends comparing an operation with its reverse.
- Note what the symptom looks like. Record whether memory rises across cycles, remains high afterward, or is accompanied by pauses. A single high reading does not establish a leak.
Allocation is normal: healthy applications create temporary objects and later release them. Look for objects that remain retained across comparable cycles, rather than treating every allocation or short-term heap increase as a leak.

Choose a profile that answers your question
- Heap snapshot: shows reachable JavaScript objects and related DOM nodes at a point in time. Use Summary to group by constructor or source, Comparison to find changes between snapshots, and Containment to inspect object structure and closures.
- Allocation instrumentation on timeline: records allocations over time and can help identify objects allocated during an interval that are still alive at its end.
- Allocation sampling: estimates allocation volume by JavaScript execution stack with lower profiling overhead than detailed timeline instrumentation.
- Detached elements: focuses on detached DOM elements that remain retained by JavaScript references.
These profiles answer different questions. Use snapshots to examine what remains reachable, timeline instrumentation to understand when surviving objects were allocated, sampling to locate allocation-heavy stacks, and the detached-elements view when removed DOM nodes are suspected. Chrome’s heap snapshot guide documents snapshot interpretation and profiling.

Compare the same lifecycle across snapshots
- In Chrome DevTools, open the Memory panel and capture a heap snapshot after the page reaches a stable state.
- Perform the suspect action and its reverse—for example, open and close the view—and repeat the cycle several times.
- Capture a second snapshot, then select Comparison.
- Inspect constructors or object types whose retained count or size grows across the repeated cycles.
- Select a suspicious object and follow its retainer chain to the reference and owner that keep it reachable. Check detached DOM nodes if the operation creates or removes elements.
A heap snapshot starts with garbage collection and shows reachable JavaScript objects; it does not show every native-code-backed property or every part of the process’s memory. A snapshot is an object-graph view, not a total memory meter.
Follow the retainer to its owner
Retained size estimates what could become free if an object’s removal made its dependents unreachable; shallow size is the memory held by the object itself. A large retained size can point toward an important retaining owner, but it does not mean that deleting the selected object blindly is safe. Trace the path to the source-level owner and establish why that owner still exists.

A detached DOM node is a clue, not necessarily the root cause. Follow the reference holding it, then inspect the component or lifecycle that should release that reference. Chrome’s guide recommends examining code that uses the retaining variable and removing the reference when the node is no longer needed.

Capture snapshots after the service is warm
Node.js documents several ways to capture heap snapshots: the Inspector using --inspect, the --heapsnapshot-signal flag (documented as available in Node.js v12.0.0 or later), v8.writeHeapSnapshot() (documented as available in Node.js v11.13.0 or later), and the Inspector protocol. Check the documentation for the Node.js version actually deployed before relying on a particular route. See Node.js: Using Heap Snapshot.

- Let the service finish bootstrapping so expected startup allocations do not dominate the comparison.
- Run the suspected function or workload repeatedly, then capture a snapshot.
- Continue the same workload while avoiding unrelated activity where possible, then capture another snapshot.
- Open the older snapshot in Chrome DevTools, load the newer snapshot, and choose Comparison.
- Inspect positive object deltas and their retaining references to find what continues to accumulate.
Account for snapshot risk
Snapshot generation stops work on Node.js’s main thread, can take more than a minute, and builds the snapshot in memory. That can double heap use and crash the process. Capture on a crash-tolerant instance or in a safe reproduction environment rather than casually triggering a snapshot on a production process whose availability matters. If the application exposes a snapshot trigger, restrict access so an unauthorized caller cannot invoke it.
A Node.js heap snapshot is not a complete account of process memory. Use it to diagnose the JavaScript object graph; do not assume its contents explain every component of the process’s memory footprint.

Fix the retaining path, not just the memory reading
Use the retainer chain to identify who owns the unwanted object and when that ownership should end. Choose a repair that matches the lifecycle shown in the profile:
- Views and DOM nodes: release references to nodes when their view or component is torn down, and unbind listeners that are no longer needed.
- Timers, subscriptions, and callbacks: clear or unsubscribe long-lived registrations when the feature’s lifecycle ends, if the retaining path shows they are keeping objects alive.
- Caches: bound the cache or remove entries when their data is no longer useful. A globally reachable, unbounded collection can retain objects, but confirm the actual entries and owners in the snapshots.
- Closures: reduce what a long-lived callback captures if its retained context includes data it no longer needs. Nested functions can keep access to variables in their closure context.
- Object-keyed metadata: consider a
WeakMapwhen metadata should not keep its object key alive solely because of that association. Weak collections are non-iterable and have key constraints; they are not a substitute when enumerable entries or deterministic cleanup are required.
Do not apply cleanup mechanically: a listener, timer, or cache is not automatically a leak. The profile should show that it retains objects beyond their intended lifetime.
Prove the repair and troubleshoot misleading results
Verify with the original scenario
- Repeat the same user interaction or workload used to reproduce the symptom.
- Capture and compare profiles using the same approach and comparable conditions.
- Check that the suspected object group no longer accumulates and that the feature still behaves correctly.
- Confirm that the original user-visible symptom improves; a brief memory drop alone is not proof.
Common diagnosis mistakes
- The memory graph rises once: this may reflect normal allocation or a temporary workload. Repeat comparable cycles and inspect what remains reachable.
- A snapshot looks smaller, but process memory stays high: the JavaScript heap is not total process memory, and snapshots omit some native-backed or non-heap memory.
- A detached element appears: trace its retaining reference to the owner; detachment by itself does not identify the faulty code.
- The heap limit was raised and failures stopped: that may postpone an out-of-memory failure, but it does not demonstrate that retained objects were released.
- Snapshots interrupt or crash a service: capture in a safe environment or on a crash-tolerant instance; snapshot generation pauses the main thread and can require enough extra memory to bring down the process.
- Two snapshots show noisy differences: warm up first, keep the workload consistent, and avoid unrelated activity between captures so expected startup or workload variation is less likely to obscure the signal.

If your debugging task needs a screenshot of a page rather than a memory profile, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. A single GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; its screenshot options include full-page capture, a CSS-selected element, custom viewport, and wait conditions. It does not diagnose JavaScript memory leaks or replace DevTools heap snapshots.
For example, this cURL request captures a page as WebP:

See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request parameters. Before a capture, it accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and whether the request was billed. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
