Use JUnit Jupiter assertions to verify what Selenium reads from the browser after an interaction. For a title, confirmation message, or input value, compare the expected value with the actual value using assertEquals(expected, actual). If the result appears asynchronously, wait for the relevant browser condition before reading and asserting it.
What to assert in a Selenium test
An assertion should check an observable outcome, not merely confirm that the test called an action. For example, after submitting a form, check the resulting message; after navigating, check the page title. Selenium’s official Java example follows this pattern: Organizing and Executing Selenium Code.
- Use an equality assertion when the expected and actual values should match, such as a title, visible text, or input value.
- Use a boolean assertion when the requirement is a predicate, such as whether an element is displayed.
- For pages that update asynchronously, wait for the condition needed by the next read before asserting.
Assert a page title or submitted text
JUnit Jupiter’s assertEquals takes the expected value first and the actual value second. These examples follow Selenium’s official Java example; adapt locators and expected text to your page.
import static org.junit.jupiter.api.Assertions.assertEquals;
import org.openqa.selenium.By;
// Navigate to the page first.
String title = driver.getTitle();
assertEquals("Web form", title);
// After entering text and submitting the form:
String message = driver.findElement(By.id("message")).getText();
assertEquals("Received!", message);
If an assertion fails, compare the expected and actual values in that order. A useful failure message can also explain the context:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
assertEquals("Received!", message, "Form submission confirmation");
Wait before asserting a dynamic value
A value that is not present yet is not necessarily a failed application behavior. When the page reveals an element after a click or network activity, synchronize on the condition the following operation requires, then read the value. Selenium documents explicit waits, implicit waits, and fixed sleeps in its Waiting Strategies guide. An explicit condition makes the intended prerequisite visible in the test.
import static org.junit.jupiter.api.Assertions.assertEquals;
import java.time.Duration;
import org.openqa.selenium.By;
import org.openqa.selenium.WebElement;
import org.openqa.selenium.support.ui.Wait;
import org.openqa.selenium.support.ui.WebDriverWait;
WebElement revealed = driver.findElement(By.id("revealed"));
driver.findElement(By.id("reveal")).click();
Wait<WebDriver> wait = new WebDriverWait(driver, Duration.ofSeconds(2));
wait.until(d -> revealed.isDisplayed());
revealed.sendKeys("Displayed");
assertEquals("Displayed", revealed.getDomProperty("value"));
The two-second timeout and property accessor above reproduce the documented example, not a universal timeout or compatibility guarantee. Choose a timeout appropriate to the application and use the value accessor supported by your Selenium API version. The condition should match the next operation: visibility before interacting with a revealed control, for example. Avoid replacing a condition-based wait with a fixed sleep unless a fixed delay is genuinely what the test needs.

Assert an expected Selenium exception
Use JUnit’s assertThrows only when the test is meant to verify that an operation throws immediately. It accepts an exception type and an executable, and returns the thrown exception.
import static org.junit.jupiter.api.Assertions.assertThrows;
import org.openqa.selenium.NoSuchElementException;
assertThrows(NoSuchElementException.class,
() -> driver.findElement(By.id("not-present")));
If the element is expected to appear later, an immediate lookup exception may reflect a missing wait rather than the behavior under test. Wait for the expected state and assert that state instead.

Check the exception message separately
Assert the returned exception’s message with a second assertion. The optional message argument to assertThrows describes an assertion failure; it is not the expected message of the thrown exception.
MyException exception = assertThrows(
MyException.class,
() -> performOperation());
assertEquals("expected detail", exception.getMessage());
Common assertion problems and fixes
- The text assertion fails despite a successful click: Check the actual text read from the page and confirm the expected value, locator, and timing. A click only proves the interaction was issued; it does not prove the page reached the expected state.
- An element lookup throws before the page updates: Wait for the relevant element condition before reading or interacting. Use
assertThrowsonly if immediate failure is intentional. - An input-value assertion reads the wrong property: Confirm that the locator identifies the input and that the chosen value accessor fits the Selenium API version in the project.
- The exception-message check behaves unexpectedly: Assert against
exception.getMessage()afterassertThrows; do not confuse it with the assertion method’s own failure message. - Examples do not compile in the project: Check the project’s JUnit and Selenium dependencies and their API documentation. The cited examples do not establish an exact Java, browser, driver, Selenium, or JUnit compatibility matrix.

If you need an image or PDF of a page rather than a Selenium interaction test, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. Cookie banners are accepted and removed along with supported newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server lets AI agents use screenshot tools. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
