An emulator or simulator runs a virtual device environment on a computer; a real device is the physical phone or tablet. Android’s official tool is called Android Emulator, while Apple’s Xcode tool is called Simulator. Virtual devices are useful for repeatable debugging and configuration coverage, but they cannot establish how an app will perform on every physical device. Use both during development, and verify release-critical behavior on real hardware.
What do emulator, simulator, and real device mean?
Android Emulator
Android’s official Android Emulator runs virtual Android devices on a computer. Developers can test across Android versions and screen sizes, and configure conditions such as location, network speed, rotation, and sensor behavior. See Android Developers’ Android Emulator documentation.
Apple Simulator
Apple calls its Xcode tool Simulator. It launches simulated Apple-platform devices on a Mac so developers can debug without having every physical device available. Apple cautions that Simulator does not reproduce the performance or all the features of physical devices. See Apple’s guidance on simulated and physical devices.
Real device
A real device is the actual phone or tablet running the relevant operating system. It tests the hardware and software combination present on that device, including hardware-dependent behavior a virtual environment may not support.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The textbook shorthand that an emulator copies hardware while a simulator copies software is not a reliable universal rule. For practical testing, focus on the platform’s tool name and the key distinction: virtual environment versus physical hardware.
How do they differ in practice?
| Testing concern | Emulator or simulator | Real device |
|---|---|---|
| Setup and iteration | Runs from a development computer and is convenient for repeated debugging. | Requires access to the physical device and a way to deploy and run the app. |
| Configuration coverage | Android Emulator can vary platform versions, screen sizes, location, network conditions, rotation, and sensors. | Represents the specific hardware and operating-system combination being tested. |
| Hardware fidelity | Some hardware-specific features may be absent, and Apple says Simulator does not reproduce every physical-device feature. | Tests actual device hardware, including features unavailable in a simulator. |
| Performance confidence | Useful for functional debugging, but a passing test does not prove real-world performance. | Needed when actual device performance or hardware behavior matters. |
| Best role | Frequent development checks and broad, repeatable virtual configurations. | Hardware-specific tests and release verification. |
Which should you use for a particular test?
Use a virtual device for routine development
- Check layouts across relevant screen sizes and operating-system versions.
- Reproduce an issue under controlled settings and repeat the same test while changing one condition at a time.
- On Android, use the emulator’s configurable location, network, rotation, and sensor conditions when those conditions are relevant.
Use physical hardware for hardware-dependent behavior
Test functions that depend on actual device features on the hardware itself. Apple notes that some hardware-specific features may not be available in Simulator and recommends physical-device testing for those features. See Apple’s device-testing guidance.

Use both before release
Google advises: “Always test your Android app on a real device before releasing it to users.” Apple likewise recommends verifying intended behavior on physical devices. A virtual test passing is useful evidence for the virtual configuration you tested, not proof that the app behaves identically on every user’s hardware. See Android’s instructions for running apps on a hardware device.
A practical test workflow
- Build and debug in the platform’s virtual environment. Use Android Emulator for Android or Xcode Simulator for Apple-platform apps. Cover the versions and screen sizes relevant to your app.
- Vary conditions deliberately. On Android, test relevant combinations of location, network speed, rotation, and sensors using the emulator controls.
- Mark tests that need real hardware. Identify hardware-specific features and any behavior for which actual device performance matters; run those checks on physical devices.
- Run release-relevant checks on hardware. Verify the app’s intended behavior on real devices before release. A single device checks only its own hardware and OS combination, not every possible configuration.
- Investigate differences in the right build and conditions. Apple notes that launching with a debugger can change the experience compared with a user’s. For slow or unreliable iOS network testing, Apple documents Network Link Conditioner. See Apple’s release-build testing guidance.
What virtual testing cannot establish
- It cannot prove performance will match a physical device; Apple explicitly warns that Simulator does not replicate physical-device performance.
- It cannot verify a hardware feature that the simulated environment does not provide.
- It cannot establish compatibility across all physical devices merely because a virtual configuration passes.
- Debug-session behavior may differ from the experience of a release build, so investigate discrepancies with the build configuration and test conditions in mind.
Apple’s archived Simulator testing and debugging guide also cautions against assuming simulated real-world performance or precise graphics-processor capabilities; because it is archived, treat it as supporting context rather than current platform guidance.
