Use an explicit wait for a specific browser condition, such as an element becoming visible or a status message changing. An implicit wait applies globally to element lookups and does not check those richer states. Selenium also warns against combining the two because their timing can become unpredictable. This guide shows how to choose and configure each approach in Python and Java.

How Selenium waits work

Web pages change over time: an element may not exist yet, may be present but hidden, or may become usable only after an action completes. A wait pauses test execution while Selenium checks for a target or condition. When the condition is met, execution continues; when the configured timeout expires first, the wait fails.

The key distinction is scope. An implicit wait applies to element location calls across the WebDriver session. An explicit wait is placed where needed and checks a stated condition. Selenium’s current documentation describes these behaviors in its WebDriver waiting strategies guide.

Implicit wait: a global lookup timeout

An implicit wait gives element-finding operations a session-wide timeout. If a lookup does not find an element immediately, Selenium keeps trying until it finds the element or the timeout expires. Selenium documents the default as zero.

Python

driver.implicitly_wait(2)

Java

driver.manage().timeouts().implicitlyWait(Duration.ofSeconds(2));

These two-second values are examples from Selenium’s documentation, not universal recommendations. An implicit wait can be useful when you intentionally want a consistent delay allowance for lookups throughout a session. It cannot express conditions such as visibility, clickability, or text being present. Use an explicit condition for those states.

Explicit wait: wait for the state you need

An explicit wait repeatedly evaluates a particular condition and returns when it succeeds. This is usually the clearest choice for dynamic interactions because the test states what must happen before it continues.

Python: wait for visibility

from selenium.webdriver.common.by import By
from selenium.webdriver.support import expected_conditions as EC
from selenium.webdriver.support.wait import WebDriverWait

wait = WebDriverWait(driver, timeout=10)
element = wait.until(EC.visibility_of_element_located((By.ID, "revealed")))
element.send_keys("Displayed")

The ten-second timeout is an illustrative setting, not an official Selenium recommendation or a guarantee that every wait will finish at precisely ten seconds. Pick a timeout appropriate to the operation and test environment.

Python: wait for a custom condition

wait.until(lambda driver: driver.find_element(By.ID, "status").text == "Ready")

The callable passed to until should return a truthy value when the desired state is reached. Python’s until returns the last successful call’s value; if it does not receive a truthy result before timeout, it raises TimeoutException.

Useful Expected Conditions

Selenium’s Expected Conditions include checks for element existence, staleness, visibility, visible text, and title content. Choose the condition that matches what the next test action actually requires: existence alone does not establish that an element is visible or ready for interaction. Consult the binding-specific Expected Conditions guide for available APIs and examples.

Fluent waits and polling controls

Fluent wait is a configurable form of condition-based waiting. In Java, FluentWait lets you set the total timeout, polling interval, and exceptions to ignore while evaluating the condition. Selenium’s Java example uses a two-second timeout, polls every 300 milliseconds, and ignores ElementNotInteractableException; those are demonstration values, not universal settings.

In Python, configure polling and ignored exceptions through WebDriverWait. The Python Selenium 4.50.0 API documents a default polling frequency of 0.5 seconds and NoSuchElementException as the default ignored exception. Those defaults are specific to that Python API documentation; do not assume they apply to another language binding or version.

Implicit vs. explicit vs. fluent waits

Wait approach Scope What it checks Configuration and fit
Implicit Element lookups across the WebDriver session Whether an element can be located Set a global lookup timeout; it does not describe visibility, text, or other dynamic states.
Explicit A particular wait at the point it is used A stated condition, such as visibility, staleness, text, or title content Use when the test needs to wait for a specific page state.
FluentWait A configured condition wait A stated condition, evaluated repeatedly In Java, configure timeout, polling interval, and ignored exceptions. Python’s WebDriverWait exposes corresponding constructor options.

Names and support differ across language bindings. Selenium notes that .NET stopped supporting Expected Conditions in Selenium 4; Ruby commonly uses blocks or lambdas. Check the API for the binding and version you actually use rather than copying a class name across languages.

Do not mix implicit and explicit waits

Selenium’s guidance is direct: “Do not mix implicit and explicit waits.” An explicit condition may perform element lookups; if those lookups themselves carry an implicit delay, the combined timing can become unpredictable. Selenium gives the example of a 10-second implicit wait combined with a 15-second explicit wait potentially timing out after 20 seconds. Treat this as an illustration of the interaction, not a precise wall-clock formula.

For predictable condition-based tests, leave the implicit wait at its default of zero and use explicit waits where needed. If you choose a global implicit wait, avoid adding explicit waits to the same session unless you have carefully accounted for their interaction.

Choosing a wait for common test situations

  • Element appears and must be interacted with: use an explicit visibility condition, then perform the action.
  • Element is inserted into the DOM, but visibility is not required yet: use an explicit existence or presence condition if your binding provides it.
  • Old element reference should no longer be valid: use a staleness condition where available.
  • Text or page title must change: wait on a text or title condition instead of adding a general lookup delay.
  • You want one lookup delay applied globally: an implicit wait can express that policy, but it is not a substitute for state-specific checks.

Troubleshooting Selenium wait failures

TimeoutException from an explicit wait

The condition did not return a truthy result within the configured timeout. Confirm the locator, check that the expected state is actually reached in the application, and verify that the condition matches the next action. For example, waiting for presence will not prove an element is visible. Increase the timeout only when the operation legitimately needs more time; a larger number will not fix an incorrect locator or a state that never occurs.

An element is found but interaction still fails

Finding an element is not the same as confirming it is visible or interactable. Wait for the condition the operation requires, and check whether the page is still changing or replacing the element before the action.

Wait duration seems longer than its timeout

Nested element lookups can themselves wait when an implicit timeout is set. Selenium’s warning about combining implicit and explicit waits applies here: remove the implicit wait when relying on explicit condition waits, or account for the interaction rather than treating the explicit timeout as an exact overall duration.

Expected Conditions import or class is unavailable

Confirm the programming language, Selenium binding, and version. Expected Conditions APIs are not identical in every binding; Selenium specifically notes that .NET no longer supports them in Selenium 4.
