Install Playwright Test in an npm project
In a terminal, run:
npm init playwright@latestThe setup prompts can create a new project or add Playwright to an existing one. Follow the prompts, then keep the generated configuration and example test as a reference. The starter is package-manager based; Yarn and pnpm commands are documented in the official installation guide.
Supported Node.js and operating-system requirements can change. Check the live installation guide if you need to confirm compatibility for a particular runtime or runner image.
Install the browsers Playwright needs
Playwright uses browser binaries matched to the installed Playwright version. Install the default browsers with:

npx playwright installThe core browser engines are Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit. Playwright also documents branded Chrome and Edge channels and device emulation. These options address different compatibility questions: engine coverage can reveal browser-specific behavior, while a branded channel or emulated device is useful when that particular environment matters. Running more browser projects increases the work your suite performs; there is no universal number every team needs to run.
When you update Playwright, install the corresponding browser binaries if needed. Do not assume the default setup simply controls whichever browser happens to be installed on the machine.
Write a first meaningful test
This test opens the Playwright site, follows a user-facing link, and checks that the destination page displays its expected heading:

Playwright’s writing-tests guide summarizes the pattern: “Playwright tests are simple: they perform actions and assert the state against expectations.” The useful test is not merely a page-load check; it verifies a journey and an observable result.

Prefer locators that describe the interface
Use role, label, text, and placeholder locators when they identify the control in terms a user would understand. For example, a button can be located by role and accessible name, while a form input can be located by its label. This makes the test’s intent clearer and ties it to the interface users encounter.
Use a test ID when your team deliberately defines it as a testing contract, particularly where a user-facing locator would be ambiguous or unstable. Avoid relying on incidental DOM structure or styling selectors when a semantic locator will do. A locator is resolved when it is used, which supports Playwright’s waiting and retry behavior.

Use web-first assertions rather than fixed delays
Await assertions that describe the state you expect. For example:
await expect(page).toHaveTitle(/Playwright/);
await expect(page.getByRole('heading', { name: 'Installation' })).toBeVisible();Web-first assertions retry while waiting for the expected condition. Locator actions also wait for the element to be actionable. Prefer those behaviors to arbitrary fixed sleeps, which can make tests slow and still fail when the application takes longer than the chosen delay.

Understand test isolation and fixtures
The built-in page fixture gives a test an isolated page backed by a browser context. A context is similar to a fresh browser profile, so do not assume that cookies, local state, or page state created by another test will be present. Fixtures establish each test’s environment and are isolated; start with the built-in fixtures and add custom ones when repeated setup genuinely warrants them.

Run and debug tests locally
Run the suite
Run all configured tests with:
npx playwright testTests run headless by default. This is useful for routine command-line feedback without opening visible browser windows.
Choose a debugging mode
npx playwright test --headedruns with a visible browser so you can watch interactions.npx playwright test --uiopens UI Mode for interactive test selection and inspection.npx playwright show-reportopens the HTML report after a run.
Use these modes to narrow down what failed: an assertion may be checking the wrong outcome, a locator may not match the intended element, or the browser may be unable to launch in the current environment. UI Mode and the report provide more context than repeatedly rerunning a failing test without inspecting it.

A basic CI job should check out the code, set up a supported runtime, install the project’s locked dependencies, install browsers and any required system packages, and then run the suite. For an npm project, the essential commands are:

npm ci
npx playwright install --with-deps
npx playwright testnpm ci installs from the lockfile. The --with-deps option installs the Linux system dependencies needed by the browsers as well as the browser binaries; use it when the CI runner requires those packages. The exact runtime setup and workflow syntax depend on your CI provider, so check the provider’s current documentation and Playwright’s CI guide for version-specific examples.
The official CI guide recommends workers: 1 as the stable default in CI. More workers or sharding can be appropriate on capable infrastructure, but they add parallel load and are not a necessary first step. Browser-binary caching is often not worthwhile, particularly when Linux system dependencies also need installation.
Common problems and what to check
- Browser executable is missing: install the browser binaries for the installed Playwright version with
npx playwright install. If the package was updated, the previously downloaded binaries may no longer match. - Browser fails to launch on Linux CI: install the runner’s required browser system packages;
npx playwright install --with-depsis the documented setup command for that case. - A locator times out or matches the wrong element: verify the page reached the expected state and refine the user-facing role, name, label, or other locator. Use a test ID if your team has established one for that purpose.
- An assertion fails intermittently: assert the observable condition with a web-first assertion instead of sleeping for an arbitrary duration. If it still fails, inspect the run in headed mode, UI Mode, or the HTML report to distinguish timing from an incorrect expectation.
- A test depends on another test’s login or cookies: revise the setup so each test establishes its own required state; isolated contexts do not inherit another test’s browser state by default.
- CI results differ from local runs: confirm the runtime and browser installation steps are appropriate for the runner, and start with one CI worker to reduce parallel execution variables.
