To switch to a popup, new tab, or other browser window in a PHP Selenium test, save the current window handle, wait for a new handle to appear, identify it by comparing the before-and-after handle lists, then call $driver->switchTo()->window($handle). Selenium treats tabs and windows alike: both are browsing contexts identified by window handles.
How Selenium window handles work
Selenium’s WebDriver documentation says it “does not make the distinction between windows and tabs.” Each open browser context has a handle, and your test can use that handle to select the context for subsequent commands. Selenium’s windows and tabs documentation covers the same model.
getWindowHandle()returns the handle for the currently selected context.getWindowHandles()returns the handles available to the session.switchTo()->window($handle)selects a context by its handle.close()closes the currently selected context.quit()closes all associated windows and ends the driver session.
In PHP, these methods are provided by php-webdriver/php-webdriver, the Selenium WebDriver language binding for PHP. Its current setup requirements and compatibility guidance can change, so check the project README for the version that matches your Selenium Server, browser, and driver.
Switch to a newly opened tab or window
Do not assume the new context is the last item in the handles array. Save the existing handles, wait for the list to change, and find the handle present afterward but not before. The PHP binding source cautions against using end($driver->getWindowHandles()) to infer which context opened most recently; handle order is not a reliable signal. - Save the original handle and the set of handles before triggering the behavior.
- Click the link or perform the application action that opens another context.
- Wait a bounded amount of time for the handle list to change.
- Compare the new list to the saved list and select the new handle.
- Switch to it and verify the destination before interacting with the page.
Example pattern, assuming $driver is an established php-webdriver session and the triggering action is added where indicated:

$driver->switchTo()->window($originalHandle);The wait is important: a click returning does not guarantee that a new context has already appeared. The example expects exactly one new context; if the application can open several at once, identify the intended one using application-specific evidence such as its URL or title rather than its position in the array.

Return to the original page and close contexts safely
Keep the original handle before opening the new context. After working in the new tab, call $driver->close() if it should be closed, then explicitly switch to the saved handle. A closed context is no longer usable; issuing commands while Selenium remains focused on it can produce a No Such Window error.
Use close() when the test should close only its current tab or window. Use quit() when the test is finished and should close all associated windows and end the session. The distinction is documented by Selenium and the PHP binding source.

Common errors and fixes
- The new tab is not the last handle. Handle ordering is not a dependable way to identify the new context. Compare the before-and-after lists with
array_diff()instead. - Switching fails immediately after a click. The new handle may not exist yet. Wait for a handle-list change, with a finite timeout, before switching.
- The test gets No Such Window after closing a tab. The selected context has been closed. Switch to a saved handle that is still open before sending further commands.
- The test closes more than intended. Check whether cleanup calls
quit(); it ends the session and closes all associated windows. Useclose()to close only the selected context. - No new handle appears. Confirm that the application action completed, that the browser did not block the popup, and that the test is connected to the expected browser session. There is no single universal cause.
- The application opens multiple contexts. Do not require exactly one new handle. Compare the handle sets, then choose the intended context using a page-specific URL, title, or other observable state.
