Exploratory testing is a planned, adaptive way to test software: you learn how the system behaves while designing, running, and evaluating tests. It is unscripted, but not aimless. A clear mission, focused charter, timebox, working notes, and debrief make discoveries useful and help turn them into repeatable follow-up tests.

What exploratory testing is—and what it is not

ISTQB defines exploratory testing as testing in which tests are designed, executed, and evaluated while the tester learns about the test object. The work combines investigation with test design and assessment: what you observe in one probe helps decide what to try next. It can include other techniques, such as equivalence partitioning, when they suit the question being investigated. ISTQB’s CTFL syllabus, version 4.0.1, dated 15 September 2024, treats exploratory testing as an experience-based technique.

Unscripted does not mean unplanned. A session has an objective and boundaries, but it does not prescribe every click in advance. That lets a tester follow surprising behavior, probe a risk more deeply, or change direction when evidence suggests a better question.

Exploratory testing is not a guarantee of finding defects, a substitute for regression automation, or a reason to abandon formal test design. It complements scripted and checklist-based testing. A scripted case may give strong repeatability; an exploratory session may be better at following an unexpected path that was not anticipated when the case was written.

When exploratory testing is useful

Consider it when specifications are missing, incomplete, or changing; when there is significant time pressure; or when the team needs to learn how a feature behaves before deciding what more formal coverage it needs. It is especially useful for investigating product risks, prior bugs, open questions, and important user workflows.

The system needs enough working functionality to support meaningful interaction. GOV.UK gives examples such as a beta before an initial MVP release or a product before a major feature release. Experienced testers are a natural fit, but business analysts, product managers, and subject-matter experts can contribute when they have the necessary testing skills. Domain knowledge, analytical skill, curiosity, and creativity help a tester choose informative probes.

These are suitability cues, not strict entry requirements. The method can be useful in other situations too, particularly when a focused session can answer a real question. The GOV.UK Service Manual’s practical guidance was published on 23 May 2016; use it as process guidance rather than as a claim that every team or product must follow one setup. How to run an exploratory testing session

  1. Choose a mission. State the risk, workflow, quality concern, or question the session should investigate. For example: “Explore password reset for confusing or unsafe outcomes when a user has an expired link.”
  2. Write a focused charter. Name the system area and objective, and give the tester enough context to start. Add useful details such as tester, time and place, environment, and test data. Define scope without scripting every action; the charter should focus investigation, not prevent a useful detour.
  3. Prepare the session. Confirm the build or environment, account or test data, and any access needed. Note relevant risks or prior defects. If the session depends on a particular state, record how to reach it.
  4. Set a timebox. Agree on a session limit suited to the mission and context. There is no universally correct duration established by the cited guidance. The point is to keep an unscripted session focused and make its scope visible.
  5. Explore, observe, and adapt. Start with the charter. Try realistic user actions and deliberate edge cases, observe the response, and let findings shape the next probe. Record which parts of the product you touched as you go.
  6. Preserve evidence. Note actions, relevant inputs, expected and actual behavior, questions, and discoveries. Capture screenshots, logs, or other evidence when they will help someone investigate or reproduce an issue. Mark follow-up ideas and unresolved concerns.
  7. Debrief and follow through. Share what the charter covered, which areas were explored, what was found, what remains uncertain, and what to test next. Turn useful discoveries into scenarios or regression checks where appropriate.

GOV.UK recommends timeboxing because it can help focus an unpredictable session on specific goals. It also notes that an exploratory test that finds a bug can be developed into a test scenario and automated. GOV.UK’s session guidance.

What to put in a test charter

A charter is a compact brief for investigation, not a miniature script. Include details that help the tester make good choices while leaving room to respond to evidence.

  • Mission: the question, risk, or behavior to investigate.
  • Scope: the feature, workflow, user role, or boundary in scope—and any meaningful exclusions.
  • Setup: environment, build, account state, and test data needed to begin.
  • Constraints: timebox, access limits, safety or data-handling boundaries.
  • Coverage prompts: relevant user needs, known risks, prior failures, or input classes to consider.
  • Reporting: who needs the outcome and what evidence or notes will help them act on it.

One example: “Explore checkout address entry on the staging build. Focus on validation, editing an address, and recovering from invalid or incomplete input. Use the supplied test account and synthetic data. Record confusing outcomes and reproducible failures; do not submit a real payment.” This points the session in a useful direction without dictating every field or click.

A 2017 paper by Ghazi, Garigapati, and Petersen identified 30 factors influencing charter design and 35 possible charter contents through interviews with nine practitioners. Those counts describe that study’s findings, not a universal checklist: the authors note potential bias and limits to generalizability. “Checklists to Support Test Charter Design in Exploratory Testing”.

Techniques and aids for focused exploration

Error guessing

Use knowledge of previous failures, common implementation mistakes, and similar systems to choose probes. Consider likely failures in inputs, outputs, logic, interfaces, and data. For a date field, for instance, test boundaries and invalid combinations suggested by the feature’s rules rather than trying random values without a question.

Checklist prompts

A short checklist can remind a tester to consider user needs, known risks, or recurring failure patterns. Keep prompts specific and update them as the team learns; broad or stale lists can create the appearance of coverage without guiding useful investigation. Checklists add some consistency but do not make an exploratory session fully repeatable.

Mind maps

A mind map can capture observations and branches in a non-linear session. It is useful when one discovery suggests several related paths and a linear script would be awkward. GOV.UK describes mind maps as quick to record and compatible with exploratory work.

Formal techniques within exploration

Exploratory testing does not rule out structured methods. Apply techniques such as equivalence partitioning when they help define meaningful input groups, then use the results of testing to decide where to probe next.

How to document sessions and make coverage visible

Record enough to help another person understand what was tested, investigate a concern, or repeat an important scenario. The exact format depends on the product and audience; a session sheet, concise notes, a mind map, screenshots, or logs may all be appropriate.

Coverage can be sporadic, and repeating the exact investigation may be difficult because the next action depends on what the tester learns. Charters, timeboxes, coverage notes, evidence, and debriefs improve visibility without forcing every action to be specified in advance. Track areas explored, discoveries and concerns, and proposed next tests; do not treat raw bug counts as a stand-alone measure of tester or product quality.

Exploratory, scripted, and checklist-based testing

Approach Specified before execution Adapts to discoveries Coverage visibility and repeatability Useful when
Exploratory Mission and scope; actions are not fully scripted. High: observations can shape the next probe. Can be less visible and harder to repeat unless coverage and evidence are recorded. Specifications are incomplete, behavior is unfamiliar, or time is constrained.
Scripted Detailed steps and expected results. Lower within the case; new findings can lead to separate cases. Typically clearer to repeat and audit because the procedure is specified. Stable, repeatable checks are needed, including regression coverage.
Checklist-based Prompts or items, without necessarily specifying every step. Some flexibility remains while the checklist provides direction. Can add consistency, while execution may still vary. Teams need reminders for known risks or recurring coverage areas.

These approaches can be combined: a checklist can inform an exploratory charter, and an exploratory discovery can become a scripted regression case. A 2017 paper based on focus groups at four companies proposes levels of exploratory testing according to how charters are formulated and reports that combining levels may be beneficial; its abstract does not quantify an effect size. Ghazi, Petersen, Bjarnason, and Runeson, “Exploratory Testing: One Size Doesn’t Fit All”.

Common problems and practical fixes

  • The session drifts. Revisit the mission and timebox. If a new issue matters more, note it and decide whether to change the charter or schedule a separate session.
  • The charter is too broad. Narrow it to a particular workflow, risk, role, or question. Keep useful adjacent discoveries in notes rather than letting them erase the session’s purpose.
  • The charter is too prescriptive. Remove step-by-step instructions that do not serve a safety or setup need. Preserve freedom to follow surprising behavior.
  • A finding cannot be reproduced. Record the build, environment, data, starting state, actions, and observed result; attach logs or screenshots when they clarify the failure.
  • The team cannot tell what was covered. List the features, states, or coverage items actually explored, plus areas left untouched and questions still open.
  • The same issue keeps returning. After investigation, convert an important discovery into a scenario or automated check if it is stable and valuable for regression.
