In Selenium’s Java API, findElement(By) returns the first match and throws NoSuchElementException if there is no match. findElements(By) returns all matches in a list, or an empty list when none match. Use the singular method for a required element; use the plural method when zero or multiple elements are valid.

Both methods use the same By locator strategies and are available through Selenium’s SearchContext interface. A WebDriver searches the current page; a WebElement searches relative to an element context. See the Selenium element-finding guide and the Java WebElement API.
When to use findElement
Choose findElement when the test expects one matching element and its absence is a failure. It returns the first match, so it does not verify that the locator is unique. If uniqueness matters, check the count with findElements.

submit.click();If no element matches, the lookup throws NoSuchElementException; it does not return null. An uncaught exception fails the test, which is usually appropriate for a required control such as a submit button.

When to use findElements
Use findElements for optional content, repeated controls, or any case where an empty result is a valid outcome. Test for absence with isEmpty() or size(), and iterate over the list when matches are present.

}The result is an empty list when there are no matches, never null. This makes plural lookup suitable for checking whether a banner or other optional element exists without treating its absence as an exception.
Searching within a parent element
You can call either method on a previously located WebElement to search in that element’s context. The same singular-versus-plural behavior applies.

Both methods are affected by the driver’s implicit-wait setting. findElement retries until it finds a match or the implicit-wait timeout is reached. findElements may return when it finds one or more matches; if it finds none, it can return an empty list after the implicit-wait timeout. Therefore, an empty result does not necessarily mean Selenium checked only once. See the Java SearchContext API.

Common mistakes and fixes
- Expecting
findElementto returnnull: it throwsNoSuchElementExceptionwhen no match is found. Use atry/catchonly if exception-based control flow suits the test; for an expected absence, usefindElements. - Expecting
findElementsto returnnull: check its empty list withisEmpty()orsize(). - Assuming singular lookup proves there is only one match: it returns the first match. Use
findElementsand assert the expected count if duplicates should fail the test. - Searching the whole page by mistake from a parent element: for descendant XPath searches, use
.//instead of//.
