For Android app development and device testing on Linux, start with Android Studio’s Emulator. For running Android apps alongside desktop Linux apps, investigate Waydroid, which runs Android in a Linux container. Genymotion Desktop is another virtual-device environment, while Anbox’s current status is not established by the available official information.

These tools use different runtime models and are not interchangeable. The right choice depends on whether you need developer-focused virtual devices, desktop integration, or a separate testing environment—and on whether your Linux system meets the relevant requirements.

Which Linux Android emulator fits your use?

Option Best fit Runtime model Important consideration
Android Studio Emulator Android development, testing virtual devices, and checking different API configurations Android Virtual Devices (AVDs) supplied with Android Studio Linux hardware acceleration relies on KVM; check virtualization support, permissions, memory, disk, and graphics. Android Studio requirements; hardware acceleration guidance
Waydroid Investigating Android apps integrated alongside Linux desktop apps Android in a Linux container Confirm the current installation and compatibility guidance for your distribution, kernel, and desktop session. The project’s description alone does not establish broad compatibility. Waydroid project
Genymotion Desktop A separate virtual-device environment for testing QEMU is the default Linux hypervisor; VirtualBox is a deprecated Linux route retained for legacy support The vendor recommends capable hardware and ARM64 images for better app architecture compatibility. Requirements; app deployment
Anbox No current use recommendation supported here Current status not verified The accessible official project page does not establish whether it is maintained, deprecated, or discontinued.

Choose Android Studio for development and testing

Google distributes the Android Emulator with Android Studio and organizes devices as AVDs. It is the most direct fit when you need to test an app against virtual device configurations rather than simply run Android apps as desktop companions. See Google’s guide to running apps on the Android Emulator.

Investigate Waydroid for desktop integration

Waydroid’s container-based model is distinct from a conventional virtual device. It is a natural candidate to investigate when your goal is running Android apps alongside Linux desktop apps, but verify the current project installation instructions for your exact distribution and session before relying on it.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

Consider Genymotion for a separate virtual-device workflow

Genymotion Desktop offers a distinct virtual-device environment. On Linux, its default hypervisor is QEMU; its documentation describes VirtualBox support as deprecated for Linux, though still available for legacy support. App compatibility can also depend on image architecture, so check that before choosing a device image.

Check Linux hardware requirements before installing

Android Studio and its Emulator

Google’s published Linux baseline for Android Studio with the Emulator is a 64-bit Linux distribution supporting GNOME, KDE, or Unity; glibc 2.31 or later; 16 GB RAM; 16 GB free disk space; a CPU with virtualization support; a 1280 × 800 minimum display; and a GPU with 4 GB VRAM. Google’s recommended configuration is 32 GB RAM, an SSD with at least 32 GB free, a 1920 × 1080 display, and a GPU with 8 GB VRAM. These are vendor-published requirements for Android Studio with the Emulator, not requirements for Waydroid or Genymotion, and meeting a stated baseline is not a guarantee of smooth performance. See the current Android Studio installation requirements.

Genymotion Desktop

Genymotion recommends an Intel Core i5 (64-bit), AMD Ryzen, or higher; an OpenGL 3.3-capable GPU or higher; at least 16 GB RAM; and a 1920 × 1080 or higher display. Its page lists 120 MB for the application plus 1 GB per virtual device. These are vendor recommendations, not an independent performance comparison. See Genymotion’s requirements.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Waydroid

The project describes Waydroid as Android running in a Linux container, but that description is not a compatibility matrix. Check the project’s current installation documentation for your distribution, kernel, and desktop session rather than assuming Android Studio’s or Genymotion’s requirements apply. Start at the Waydroid project site.

Check KVM acceleration for Android Studio’s Emulator

On Linux, Google’s Android Emulator uses KVM for hardware acceleration. The host CPU must support and have enabled virtualization: Google specifies VT-x, Intel EM64T, and Execute Disable support for Intel, or AMD-V for AMD. The account running the emulator also needs suitable permissions to use KVM.

  1. Check the CPU flags. Run egrep -c '(vmx|svm)' /proc/cpuinfo. A positive count indicates that Intel virtualization (vmx) or AMD virtualization (svm) flags are visible to Linux; it does not, by itself, confirm that KVM permissions are correct.
  2. Check emulator acceleration. From a terminal where the Android SDK emulator command is available, run emulator -accel-check. Consult Google’s output and KVM troubleshooting guidance if acceleration is unavailable.
  3. Optionally use the Linux check utility. Google also suggests installing cpu-checker and running kvm-ok. Follow your distribution’s package instructions to install that utility.
  4. Resolve the reported issue. If CPU virtualization is not visible, check that it is enabled in firmware settings and exposed to the operating system. If the CPU supports it but the emulator still cannot use KVM, investigate KVM access permissions for the user running the emulator.

Google’s acceleration guidance covers the precise checks and permissions. A VM or restricted host environment may also affect whether the required CPU features are exposed; confirm what your actual Linux host makes available before treating an emulator failure as an app problem.

Choose a Genymotion image with app compatibility in mind

Genymotion recommends ARM64 images for the best app compatibility. Its documentation says more modern apps are available only for ARM64 and that many current apps may fail to install on x86_64 images. That is a compatibility risk, not a promise that ARM64 will resolve every app-installation problem or Google Play Services issue. Check the app’s requirements and Genymotion’s current application deployment guidance when selecting an image.

Troubleshoot common selection and setup problems

The Android Studio Emulator starts slowly or lacks acceleration

  • Likely issue: KVM is unavailable, CPU virtualization is disabled or not exposed, or the user lacks suitable access.
  • Check: Run emulator -accel-check; inspect virtualization flags with egrep -c '(vmx|svm)' /proc/cpuinfo; and, if installed, run kvm-ok.
  • Next step: Follow the exact diagnostic and permission guidance in Google’s hardware acceleration documentation. Do not assume a setting or fix that applies to one Linux distribution applies to another.

An app will not install in a Genymotion device

  • Likely issue: The selected image architecture does not match what the app supports.
  • Next step: Try an ARM64 image when available and consult Genymotion’s app deployment documentation. ARM64 improves the architecture match for many modern apps but does not guarantee installation or service compatibility.

Waydroid instructions do not match your machine

  • Likely issue: The instructions or assumptions do not match your distribution, kernel, or desktop session.
  • Next step: Check the current Waydroid project installation guidance for your specific environment. The project’s container description is not evidence that every Linux setup is supported.

You are unsure whether Anbox is a current option

The available official project page does not establish its present maintenance or end-of-life status. Do not treat old tutorials or a project listing as proof that Anbox is a supported current choice; seek current official status information before investing in it.
