Use your desktop browser’s responsive or device mode for fast layout checks, then move to an operating-system simulator or a physical phone when a bug depends on mobile browser behavior, OS integration, or hardware. Desktop emulation changes selected conditions; it does not make a desktop computer behave exactly like a phone.
Choose the right level of mobile testing

Chrome describes Device Mode as a first-order approximation, and its guidance warns that browser emulators do not reproduce all mobile API, CSS-support, and behavior differences. Choose the method according to the suspected cause of the bug, not just the desired screen size. Google Chrome’s Device Mode guidance also advises: “When in doubt, your best bet is to actually run your page on a mobile device.”
Start with responsive mode in a desktop browser
Chrome DevTools
- Open the page in Chrome and open DevTools.
- Turn on Device Mode using the device toolbar button or the DevTools device-mode shortcut shown for your platform.
- Choose a device profile or enter a custom responsive viewport. Test your own breakpoints and the widths between them, not only named phone presets.
- Rotate the viewport to check portrait and landscape layouts. Where relevant, use the available CPU and network throttling or geolocation controls to reproduce the scenario.
- Inspect the page and reproduce the affected interaction. Treat the result as a quick emulated check, not proof of physical-device behavior.

Firefox Responsive Design Mode
- Open Firefox Responsive Design Mode from the browser’s developer tools.
- Select a listed device or set a custom content viewport.
- Check the layouts at your breakpoints and between them; use its approximate network characteristics when a slower connection is part of the test.
- Recheck important interactions in the target browser on a device if the issue may depend on mobile behavior.

Safari Responsive Design Mode
- Open the page in Safari and enable Responsive Design Mode from Safari’s Develop menu.
- Preview the page at responsive sizes and inspect media queries and dynamic styles.
- If the layout depends on the address bar, onscreen keyboard, or device-specific form behavior, validate it in Simulator or on a connected Apple device.

Move to a simulator or real device when fidelity matters
Use a platform simulator for OS-specific behavior
A simulator is the next step when the suspected failure involves operating-system integration or platform-specific rendering rather than a simple viewport issue. On Apple platforms, Safari Responsive Design Mode can open the page in Simulator; Apple also documents inspecting pages on connected iOS and iPadOS devices and simulators. Use a physical phone for hardware- or browser-dependent bugs
Test on an actual device when the issue may involve a mobile browser API, keyboard behavior, touch interaction, hardware performance, or rendering that differs by device. Open the site in the target browser and OS, then exercise the failing interaction rather than relying only on a screenshot or a viewport preview.
For a useful bug record, note the device, OS version, browser version, viewport and orientation, and relevant network conditions. This is a practical reproducibility checklist, not a universal standard. One phone only confirms that particular combination; it does not establish behavior across other models, browsers, or OS versions.

Automate checks where they are repeatable
ChromeDriver mobile emulation
ChromeDriver can emulate a known device profile or use specified device attributes for repeatable tests of an emulated Chrome configuration. This is useful for checking responsive behavior in automation, but it is not equivalent to running Chrome on a physical phone. See ChromeDriver mobile emulation.
Safari WebDriver
Apple documents Safari WebDriver automation, including Safari on iOS and iPadOS through a connected Mac. Enable and configure automation using Apple’s current instructions in WebDriver. Select browser and OS combinations that reflect the audience and product; the documentation does not establish a universal number of combinations to test.

Cloud testing
Chrome’s browser-testing guidance identifies cloud-based emulators as an option for automated testing across platforms. That category can help teams increase automated breadth, but cloud emulation does not remove the need to validate hardware-dependent behavior on devices. Troubleshoot misleading or failed checks
- The layout looks correct in emulation but breaks on a phone. Responsive mode approximates a viewport and selected conditions, not the full mobile browser and device. Reproduce on the target phone and browser, then record the OS and browser versions.
- A bug appears only when the keyboard opens or the address bar changes. Desktop previews may not reproduce these device-specific layout effects. Check in Safari Simulator or on the relevant physical device.
- A page passes at a named phone preset but fails at another width. Test custom widths around the design’s breakpoints and between presets; a device profile is not a substitute for checking the responsive range.
- Automated Chrome checks pass, but a phone still fails. ChromeDriver tests an emulated configuration. Confirm on the actual browser and hardware, especially for mobile APIs, rendering, or performance issues.
- A Safari automation test cannot reach an iPhone or iPad. Apple’s documented WebDriver setup for iOS and iPadOS uses a connected Mac. Follow Apple’s setup steps and confirm the target device is connected and available to the automation environment.
Frequently asked questions
Does changing the user agent make a desktop browser a mobile browser?
No. Changing a user agent or viewport can help reproduce selected conditions, but it does not reproduce all mobile browser APIs, operating-system behavior, or hardware.
How many phones should I test?
The cited platform documentation does not prescribe a universal number. Choose devices and browser/OS versions based on the combinations your users rely on and the behavior your product must support.
