Design-system visual testing catches unintended appearance changes by rendering representative component states, capturing screenshots, and comparing them with approved baselines. Run those checks in CI, review each meaningful difference before accepting a new baseline, and keep visual checks alongside—not instead of—functional and accessibility testing.
What visual regression tests catch—and what they do not
A visual test compares a rendered capture with an accepted snapshot. Differences can reveal changes in layout, color, size, spacing, typography, or other visible properties. The baseline is the last reviewed state; a changed capture is a prompt for inspection, not an automatic verdict that the code is wrong.
Visual checks cover only the states and capture conditions you run. They can miss a defect in an untested component state or user flow, and pixel differences may need human interpretation. Functional tests assess behavior and logic; visual tests assess appearance. Automated accessibility scans can complement both, but do not replace a full accessibility evaluation.
Choose what to capture
Start with isolated component stories
Storybook stories provide repeatable cases for individual components. Include meaningful variants and states rather than only the default: for example, long text, disabled and error states, alternate themes, and responsive breakpoints that matter to your system. Storybook documents an official Chromatic addon, @chromatic-com/storybook; its documented setup requires Storybook 7.6 or higher. Check your installed version and the current Storybook visual testing documentation before adopting that path.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Reuse states from browser tests when useful
If your team already has browser tests, snapshots can also be attached to rendered states in Playwright, Vitest browser mode, or Cypress. This can cover user-flow states that are awkward to represent as isolated stories. Chromatic documents integrations for these tools, including snapshots in Playwright flows; that is vendor documentation, not a comparative evaluation of products. See its documentation.
Choose cases the team can keep stable and maintain. A broad suite of redundant or highly dynamic screenshots can create review work without useful coverage; a narrow suite that omits important variants can miss regressions.

Build a repeatable visual-testing workflow
- Define representative cases. Select stories or browser-test states for the components, variants, themes, and viewport sizes where a visual change would matter. Make test data deterministic.
- Establish a reviewed baseline. Capture the interface when it is in an acceptable state and have the team review it. Storybook’s documented Chromatic workflow creates baseline snapshots on the first build.
- Run comparisons in CI. Compare captures with the approved baseline on relevant commits or pull requests. Where your CI and review process support it, make unresolved visual changes a required review before merge.
- Inspect every meaningful difference. Determine whether a diff is an intended design change or a regression. Review the rendered result and change scope before accepting an updated baseline.
- Keep conditions consistent. Fix the browser, viewport, theme, device-pixel ratio (DPR), fonts, and data as appropriate. Pause or control animation and avoid environmental changes that create noise.
- Keep other checks in the pipeline. Retain functional tests for behavior and accessibility checks for machine-detectable issues, with human evaluation where required.
Control the conditions behind a screenshot
A screenshot is a result of both the interface and its capture environment. Different browsers, viewport dimensions, themes, loaded data, fonts, and DPR can produce different pixels even when the intended design has not changed. A DPR mismatch can itself register as a visual change, so keep it consistent across baseline and comparison runs.
Animation needs particular care. Chromatic says its capture process pauses CSS animations and videos, but JavaScript-driven animation needs team handling. Make animated states deterministic or disable their motion for the capture; otherwise a screenshot taken at a different moment may produce a noisy diff. Stabilize asynchronous data and font loading as well, so comparisons reflect code changes rather than timing.

Choose a capture route that fits your suite
| Route | Best fit | Trade-off to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Story-based captures | Design-system components and their isolated variants or states. | Stories need to represent the states you care about and remain deterministic. |
| Snapshots in browser tests | Rendered states already produced by Playwright, Vitest browser mode, or Cypress tests. | Flow-based coverage can be harder to isolate and maintain than component stories. |
| Hosted visual review workflow | Teams that want a hosted capture and review process; official Chromatic docs describe its hosted service and integrations. | Pricing and plan limits are not stated here; evaluate current vendor terms and workflow needs directly. |
Compare routes by the cases they cover, stability, reviewer experience, and how they fit CI. The cited documentation describes Chromatic’s hosted workflow, but does not establish a total-cost comparison or a comparison with self-hosted alternatives. No one capture route guarantees detection of every UI defect.
Use accessibility checks as a complement
Storybook and Chromatic document component-level axe-based accessibility checks and accessibility baselines. These scans can surface machine-detectable issues, but they are not a complete accessibility evaluation. Preserve functional coverage and appropriate human review rather than treating visual diffs or automated scans as substitutes.

What published evidence says about review effort
A 2026 arXiv study analyzed 307 pull requests across 103 GitHub repositories and coded 189 issues flagged by visual regression testing. Within that study’s sample, VRT-related pull requests had a median resolution time 3.8 times longer and 10 times more discussion comments than its visual-PR comparison group. The coded issue categories included layout (39.7%), appearance (27.5%), and color (14.8%). These are descriptive results from that analyzed sample, not universal estimates or proof that visual testing alone caused the additional time. The study reported no significant difference in acceptance rates and also identified non-stylistic issues. See the arXiv study.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a visual regression test tell whether a change is intentional?
No. It identifies a difference from the accepted capture; a reviewer decides whether that difference is intended.
Do accessibility scans replace visual testing?
No. Automated accessibility scans and visual comparisons detect different classes of issues, and neither replaces functional testing or a complete accessibility evaluation.
