Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteAutomate a React application by driving its rendered browser interface with Selenium WebDriver, then waiting for the specific visible result each action should produce. Selenium does not need React component access: React renders into the browser DOM, and Selenium interacts with that interface as a user would.
What Selenium does in a React test
Selenium WebDriver controls a browser through browser automation APIs and can run locally or on a remote machine. The Selenium project describes WebDriver as a W3C Recommendation. React’s client APIs render a component tree into a browser DOM node; Selenium works against the resulting page, not React’s component internals. See Selenium WebDriver and React’s Client React DOM APIs.
This makes Selenium useful for end-to-end checks of user-visible behavior: opening a route, entering data, clicking a control, and checking the resulting interface. Choose selectors and assertions that match your application. Selenium and React do not require a particular test runner or React version for the basic approach.

npm install selenium-webdriver
Selenium’s JavaScript API page currently says Node.js 22 or newer is required and lists support for Node 22, 24, and 26, with support-end dates of 2027-04-30, 2028-04-30, and 2029-04-30 respectively. These requirements can change; check the official API page when setting up or upgrading. Selenium Manager handles browser-driver installation automatically according to that page.
Build a browser test around visible behavior
The following is an illustrative pattern, not code verified against a particular React application. It opens a locally served app, clicks a save control, waits for a status element to become visible, and always closes the browser session.
const { Builder, Browser, By, until } = require('selenium-webdriver');
async function run() {
const driver = await new Builder().forBrowser(Browser.CHROME).build();
try {
await driver.get('http://localhost:3000');
const saveButton = await driver.findElement(By.css('[data-testid="save"]'));
await saveButton.click();
const status = await driver.findElement(By.css('[role="status"]'));
await driver.wait(until.elementIsVisible(status), 5000);
// Add an assertion appropriate to the application's expected result.
} finally {
await driver.quit();
}
}
run().catch((error) => {
console.error(error);
process.exitCode = 1;
});
The selectors, local URL, and timeout are examples. Use locators that identify the controls and outcomes in your own app. A stable test attribute such as data-testid is one possible application-specific choice; it is not a React or Selenium requirement. The official JavaScript quick start demonstrates building a session, navigating, reading the page title, and quitting in a finally block.

Why the cleanup belongs in finally
If a lookup, click, wait, or assertion fails, finally still attempts to quit the session. Without cleanup, a failed run can leave a browser process open and interfere with subsequent local or CI runs.

A successful navigation does not mean a single-page app has finished every JavaScript-driven update. Selenium navigation waits for a selected document readyState (by default, complete), which concerns assets defined in the HTML. JavaScript can continue to change the page afterward, so the element needed by the next test step may not yet exist or be ready. Selenium identifies races around page state as a common source of flaky tests in its Waiting Strategies guide.
Use explicit waits for the condition you need
An explicit wait polls a condition until it becomes true or times out. Wait for the state relevant to the next step: for example, a result becoming visible, a loading indicator disappearing, or a new control appearing after a click. The example above uses until.elementIsVisible; other conditions should reflect the behavior the test actually depends on.

A fixed sleep can be too short when the application or CI machine is slow and unnecessarily long when the page is fast. A condition-based wait proceeds when its condition is met and reports failure if it never arrives. Choose the timeout and, if needed, polling interval to suit your app and execution environment; there is no universal correct timeout.
Do not mix implicit and explicit waits
An implicit wait is a global setting applied to element-location calls. Explicit waits describe a particular condition at a particular point in the test. Selenium warns that combining the two can make timing unpredictable. Prefer explicit, condition-specific waits for asynchronous React transitions rather than layering both strategies.
Recommended Free Tools
Selenium’s wait API also allows customization such as ignored exceptions and a timeout message. A useful failure message should identify the condition that did not arrive, making it easier to distinguish a product defect from a selector or synchronization problem.

Run locally first, then consider remote execution
| Arrangement | Where the browser runs | When it fits | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local WebDriver session | On the machine running the test | Developing a test and getting feedback on one available browser | You manage the local environment and the browser/platform coverage is limited to what is available there. |
| Remote WebDriver session | On a Selenium server addressed by URL | Running tests on a remote browser host | You need to configure and maintain or obtain access to the remote execution environment. |
| Selenium Grid | Across multiple machines and platforms | Broader machine or platform combinations and distributed execution | It adds remote infrastructure and configuration; Selenium’s documentation does not establish a general cost or speed comparison with local runs. |
The JavaScript API documents configuring a remote server with usingServer(...) and the SELENIUM_REMOTE_URL environment variable. Start with a local session unless your coverage or execution needs call for remote capacity. Selenium’s overview describes Grid’s role in running tests across machines and platforms.
Remote session configuration shape
Use your team’s actual remote Selenium endpoint in place of the environment variable value; do not commit credentials or private endpoints to source control.
const { Builder, Browser } = require('selenium-webdriver');
const remoteUrl = process.env.SELENIUM_REMOTE_URL;
if (!remoteUrl) throw new Error('Set SELENIUM_REMOTE_URL');
const driver = await new Builder()
.forBrowser(Browser.CHROME)
.usingServer(remoteUrl)
.build();

- Element not found immediately after navigation or a click: the app may still be rendering or updating. Wait for the relevant element or state instead of assuming navigation completion means React updates are done.
- Wait times out: confirm the expected state actually occurs, the selector matches the rendered DOM, and the test is on the intended route. If the condition is correct but the environment is slower, adjust the timeout to fit that environment and retain a useful failure message.
- Flaky results across runs: look for a race between an action and the state it triggers. Replace fixed sleeps or immediate lookups with explicit waits for the required state; avoid mixing implicit and explicit waits.
- Browser or driver setup fails: verify the current Node.js requirement and supported releases on Selenium’s API page, and check the browser availability and Selenium Manager behavior for your environment.
- A browser remains after a failed test: keep session shutdown in a
finallyblock so cleanup is attempted regardless of where the failure occurs. - Remote test cannot connect: check that
SELENIUM_REMOTE_URLis set to the correct reachable Selenium server URL and that the server is configured for the requested browser.
Or skip the browser setup

Frequently Asked Questions
Can Selenium test React without accessing React components?
Yes. Selenium interacts with the rendered browser DOM and user-visible interface; it does not need React component internals.
Does Selenium Grid have to be installed to start?
No. A local browser session is sufficient to begin; Grid is relevant when you need execution across multiple machines or platforms.
