For most current Selenium setups, install the Selenium language binding and create a Chrome WebDriver instance; Selenium Manager can find, download, and cache a compatible ChromeDriver automatically. Download and configure ChromeDriver yourself only when you need a fixed executable, use a nonstandard browser installation or architecture, or cannot allow Selenium Manager to reach its download services.
What ChromeDriver does—and what Selenium Manager changes
ChromeDriver is the separate executable Selenium WebDriver uses to control Chrome. It acts between your Selenium test code and the browser. Chrome for Developers describes ChromeDriver and its basic setup.
Selenium Manager, included with Selenium releases since Selenium 4.6 according to the Selenium Project documentation, handles driver management when a driver has not already been supplied. It discovers the local browser version, resolves a suitable driver using vendor metadata, downloads and unpacks it, and caches it locally. For a typical installation, there is no need to install a separate driver-manager package or set a driver path.
Set up ChromeDriver automatically
Install the Selenium binding for your language, ensure Chrome is installed, then create a Chrome WebDriver instance without a driver path. The first run may need network access so Selenium Manager can retrieve driver metadata and the executable.

Install Selenium with python -m pip install selenium. Then save and run this script:

Install Selenium WebDriver with npm install selenium-webdriver. This example uses the JavaScript API’s Builder pattern:

When to manage ChromeDriver manually
Manual setup is useful when your team must pin a driver version, Chrome is installed in a custom or package-managed location, automatic downloads are blocked, or the environment is not supported by the standard Selenium Manager binary. It offers more control but means you must keep the executable path and browser-driver compatibility current.
Choose a matching version
Do not assume an arbitrary latest ChromeDriver works with every installed Chrome. For Chrome version M115 and later, Chrome for Developers says Chrome and ChromeDriver releases are available together by release channel—Stable, Beta, Dev, and Canary—through Chrome for Testing availability data. Check the metadata for the installed browser’s version or channel before pinning a driver. Selenium Manager performs this resolution using browser-vendor metadata. Make the executable discoverable
- Install Chrome or Chromium in a location recognized by the browser binding, or note its exact path if it is custom or package-managed.
- Download the appropriate ChromeDriver build for the operating system and architecture from the official ChromeDriver distribution path.
- Make the driver executable discoverable. Chrome’s getting-started instructions describe adding it to
PATH; alternatively, configure the path through the Selenium binding. - Run a small test that opens a page and always closes the session with
quit().
Python with an explicit driver path
Pass a driver path through a Selenium Service object when your environment requires a specific binary:

driver.quit()Replace /path/to/chromedriver with the actual executable path for your platform. The Service/path approach is documented by Selenium and complements Chrome’s instructions to put the driver on PATH or configure a binding-specific path.

Java with an explicit driver path
Chrome’s documented Java configuration uses the webdriver.chrome.driver system property before creating a Chrome driver:

Automatic or manual: which setup should you use?

Troubleshoot common ChromeDriver setup failures
Unable to locate a driver
Check whether a stale path setting points to a missing executable. If you do not need a pinned driver, remove the stale configuration and let Selenium Manager resolve it. If you do need a manual binary, verify the path and that the file is executable. Selenium’s driver installation troubleshooting guide covers this error and the manager option.
Proxy or firewall blocks downloads
Selenium Manager contacts remote metadata services and downloads browser-driver artifacts. If requests fail, ask whether the environment permits those endpoints and configure the proxy as needed; Selenium documents the SE_PROXY setting. In tightly restricted environments, provision a compatible driver and configure its explicit path instead.

Chrome is installed through a package manager
Anaconda, snap, and other packaging methods can place Chrome or Chromium outside locations Selenium recognizes. Configure the browser and/or driver path explicitly when automatic discovery selects the wrong location or cannot find the installation.
Unsupported architecture
The standard Selenium Manager binaries do not cover every architecture. Selenium’s documentation notes Linux ARM64/aarch64 and some other nonstandard setups may need a custom build or an explicit driver path; it describes SE_MANAGER_PATH as one way to select a custom Selenium Manager binary.
Driver starts but Chrome will not launch on Linux
A compatible driver does not guarantee the operating system has every shared library Chrome needs. Selenium’s manager documentation lists examples of missing Linux libraries, but the dependency list varies with distribution and browser release. Check the specific launch error and install the corresponding distribution packages rather than relying on a universal package list.
