Choose JUnit 6 if Java 17 or newer fits your runtime and your team wants to use the JUnit Platform and Jupiter model. Choose TestNG when its suite XML, groups, method or group dependencies, data providers, or execution controls meet a specific requirement. Neither framework is a universal winner: check your Java baseline, build and IDE integration, test selection and reporting, and migration cost before deciding.
What is the difference between TestNG and JUnit?
Both frameworks support Java automated testing, but they organize and configure test execution differently. TestNG documents suites and tests configured in testng.xml, groups, dependencies, data providers, and several parallel execution modes. JUnit 6 separates its architecture into the JUnit Platform, which launches test engines; Jupiter, the programming and extension model for new JUnit tests; and Vintage, an engine for running legacy JUnit 3 and 4 tests during migration.
These distinctions matter when they map to how your team selects, groups, runs, and maintains tests. Feature availability alone does not establish that a framework is faster, more widely adopted, or produces better software.
JUnit 6 and Java compatibility
The JUnit overview identifies version 6.1.3, released August 7, 2026, and states that JUnit 6 requires Java 17 or higher at runtime. Confirm that baseline against the JDK used to run tests in your local build and CI, not only the JDK used to compile application code. See the JUnit User Guide and JUnit release notes for current project information.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
TestNG’s documentation examples identify version 7.9.0 in a JDK 11 setup and 7.5.1 in a JDK 8 setup. Those examples do not establish the newest TestNG release or a complete compatibility matrix. Verify the TestNG version and JDK combination you plan to use against the framework’s documentation and your build environment before adopting a dependency. See TestNG documentation.

| Decision | TestNG | JUnit 6 | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Organizing tests | Documents suites and tests in testng.xml, groups, method inclusion and exclusion, and explicit ordering controls. |
The Platform launches engines; Jupiter is the model for new JUnit tests, while Vintage runs legacy JUnit 3/4 tests. | How the team separates and selects unit, integration, and other test suites. |
| Parameterized tests | @DataProvider supplies argument sets to test methods and can be configured to run generated tests in parallel. |
JUnit has a parameterized-test model. Check the current JUnit 6 guide for the APIs and dependencies required by your chosen setup. | Input-source needs, execution behavior, and how individual cases appear in reports. |
| Dependencies and order | Documents method and group dependencies, along with suite ordering options. | Do not assume that ordering or dependency behavior is interchangeable between frameworks. Confirm the behavior of the selected engine. | Whether a test genuinely depends on another test, or whether shared setup or a clearer workflow would be easier to maintain. |
| Parallel execution | Documents parallel modes for methods, tests, classes, instances, and data providers, with thread-count configuration. | JUnit release notes mention a new parallel test executor implementation in 6.1.0. Vintage has separate opt-in class and method parallel settings for legacy tests. | The level of parallelism you need and whether tests are safe to run concurrently. Measure your own suite rather than assuming parallel execution will reduce run time. |
| Legacy JUnit 3/4 tests | Documents integration for running JUnit 3 and JUnit 4 tests. | Vintage runs JUnit 3/4 tests on the JUnit Platform during migration; current JUnit documentation deprecates Vintage. | Whether you need a temporary transition path and how you will move legacy tests toward Jupiter. |
| Build support | Documentation covers Gradle and Maven usage. | The JUnit overview lists Gradle, Maven, Ant, Bazel, and sbt support. | Your actual build-tool version, test provider, IDE discovery, CI reporting, and required plugins. |
Gradle’s Test DSL says it “Executes JUnit (3.8.x, 4.x or 5.x) or TestNG tests.” That documents support in Gradle’s Test task; it does not settle compatibility for every version or setup, so verify the provider and configuration used by your project.

Which framework fits common project situations?
Starting a new Java project
Start with JUnit when the team’s build and IDE workflow supports the JUnit Platform and Jupiter fits the way you want to organize tests. First check the Java 17 runtime requirement for JUnit 6 against the JDK used to execute tests.
Using suite XML, groups, dependencies, or data providers
Evaluate TestNG when those documented capabilities solve a concrete need—for example, selecting named groups, defining suites centrally, supplying cases through a data provider, or expressing an execution dependency. Prefer a design that keeps tests understandable; dependencies and ordering can make a suite harder to reason about when used without a clear workflow reason.

Migrating an existing JUnit 4 suite
Consider a staged JUnit 6 transition with Vintage as a temporary bridge, then move tests and extensions toward Jupiter. Account for changes such as @Before and @After becoming @BeforeEach and @AfterEach, @Category becoming @Tag, and @RunWith needing an appropriate Jupiter extension or other replacement. JUnit 4 rules also need migration. Because Vintage is deprecated in current JUnit documentation, treat it as transitional rather than the model for new tests. See the JUnit User Guide.
Working within a build or IDE constraint
Check the versions and configuration that actually run tests: Gradle or Maven, the test provider, runtime JDK, IDE discovery, CI test reporting, and required plugins. Both frameworks have common Java build integrations; that fact alone does not decide which fits your repository.

A practical framework selection checklist
- Confirm the runtime JDK. If considering JUnit 6, verify that tests can run on Java 17 or later.
- List concrete execution needs. Record required suite selection, groups, parameter sources, ordering, dependencies, and parallel granularity.
- Validate build and editor support. Confirm test discovery and reports in the repository’s actual build, IDE, and CI configuration.
- Account for existing tests. Estimate the changes needed for annotations, rules, runners, extensions, and any temporary compatibility layer.
- Run a representative pilot. Compare maintainability, discovery, reporting, and execution behavior using the project’s own tests. Do not infer speed from a feature list.
Common decision mistakes
- Choosing by a feature checklist alone: A feature matters only if the project needs it and the team can maintain the resulting test structure.
- Assuming framework features prove performance: Parallel options do not guarantee faster runs; test state and workload affect outcomes.
- Treating version examples as compatibility guarantees: TestNG’s JDK-specific setup examples are not a full support matrix or proof of the newest release.
- Adopting Vintage indefinitely: Use it as a migration bridge and plan the move of legacy tests toward Jupiter.
- Assuming build integration settles the choice: Verify discovery, providers, reporting, and plugins in the project’s exact configuration.
