For a particular moment in motion, leave animations enabled and capture only after the page reaches the state you want. A screenshot records one still frame, so the animation policy and capture timing determine what you see.
Choose what the screenshot should show
- A stable baseline: suppress motion to reduce differences caused by animation timing.
- The finished state: let finite animations finish before capturing.
- An intermediate frame: keep motion enabled and coordinate capture with the relevant app state or animation event.
- An animation under inspection: use browser developer tools to replay or scrub supported animations.
These goals call for different capture methods. Disabling animation is useful for a baseline, but it is not a general way to freeze an animation at its current instant.
Make a repeatable Playwright screenshot
Playwright’s regular page.screenshot() allows animations by default. Disable them explicitly when you want a more stable still:

Infinite animations are canceled to their initial state for the screenshot and resume afterward. Use Playwright’s visual screenshot assertion
For a visual-regression check in the Playwright test runner, use toHaveScreenshot():
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot();The assertion waits until two consecutive page screenshots match, then compares the last screenshot. Screenshot assertions require the Playwright test runner, and their animation default is disabled. Capture a deliberate animation state
When a transition or animation must appear partway through, do not disable it. Trigger the effect, synchronize with the application’s state or an animation event when possible, and take the screenshot after that condition is met. Playwright does not prescribe one wait duration that works for every page: animation duration and the target state vary.
An arbitrary sleep can be fragile because timing may differ across runs or environments. Prefer an observable condition that represents the state being captured; use a fixed delay only when the page offers no suitable signal and the timing is understood.

Capture a page or element with Puppeteer
Puppeteer supports page-level Page.screenshot() and element-level ElementHandle.screenshot(). Choose page capture for the full viewport or page image and element capture when only one target matters. Element capture may bring the target into view, so account for viewport changes and any page behavior triggered by scrolling. Consult the Puppeteer screenshots guide for the current API usage.
Inspect and scrub supported animations in Chrome DevTools
For hands-on inspection, open Chrome DevTools’ Animations panel before triggering the effect. The panel can inspect, replay, and scrub CSS animations, CSS transitions, Web Animations, and View Transitions API animations. Google’s guide says requestAnimationFrame-driven animations are not yet supported, so use an application-level or browser-automation approach for those. See the Chrome DevTools Animations guide.

Troubleshoot inconsistent or missing animation states
- The screenshot changes from run to run: check whether regular Playwright capture is allowing motion by default. For a stable baseline, set
animations: 'disabled'or use the test runner’s screenshot assertion. - The image shows the end rather than the current frame: disabling animations fast-forwards finite ones. Keep animations enabled and synchronize capture to the state you need.
- An infinite animation appears at its starting state: that is the documented disabled-animation behavior during capture; it resumes afterward.
- The assertion does not settle: investigate other changing page content as well as animation. The assertion waits for two consecutive screenshots to match, so unrelated visual changes can prevent a stable pair.
- The DevTools panel does not expose the effect: check how the animation is implemented. The documented panel support excludes
requestAnimationFrameanimations. - An element screenshot changes the page: check whether bringing the element into view caused scrolling or other page behavior, and confirm the target’s final viewport position.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a screenshot capture an entire animation?
No. A screenshot is a still frame. Capture separate images at chosen states if you need multiple points in an animation.

Can I use Chrome DevTools to scrub a requestAnimationFrame animation?
The Chrome DevTools Animations guide says requestAnimationFrame animations are not yet supported by that panel.
